Now it came<1961> about in the days<3117> when the judges<8199> governed<8199>, that there was a famine<7458> in the land<776>. And a certain man<376> of Bethlehem<1035> in Judah<3063> went<1980> to sojourn<1481> in the land<7704> of Moab<4124> with his wife<802> and his two<8147> sons<1121>.
The name<8034> of the man<376> was Elimelech<458>, and the name<8034> of his wife<802>, Naomi<5281>; and the names<8034> of his two<8147> sons<1121> were Mahlon<4248> and Chilion<3630>, Ephrathites<673> of Bethlehem<1035> in Judah<3063>. Now they entered<935> the land<7704> of Moab<4124> and remained<1961> there<8033>.
Then Elimelech<458>, Naomi's<5281> husband<376>, died<4191>; and she was left<7604> with her two<8147> sons<1121>.
They took<5375> for themselves<1992> Moabite<4125> women<802> as wives<802>; the name<8034> of the one<259> was Orpah<6204> and the name<8034> of the other<8145> Ruth<7327>. And they lived<3427> there<8033> about ten<6235> years<8141>.
Then both<8147><1992> Mahlon<4248> and Chilion<3630> also<1571> died<4191>, and the woman<802> was bereft<7604> of her two<8147> children<3206> and her husband<376>.
Then she arose<6965> with her daughters-in-law<3618> that she might return<7725> from the land<7704> of Moab<4124>, for she had heard<8085> in the land<7704> of Moab<4124> that the LORD<3068> had visited<6485> His people<5971> in giving<5414> them food<3899>.
So she departed<3318> from the place<4725> where<834><8033> she was, and her two<8147> daughters-in-law<3618> with her; and they went<1980> on the way<1870> to return<7725> to the land<776> of Judah<3063>.
And Naomi<5281> said<559> to her two<8147> daughters-in-law<3618>, "Go<1980>, return<7725> each<802> of you to her mother's<517> house<1004>. May the LORD<3068> deal<6213> kindly<2617> with you as you have dealt<6213> with the dead<4191> and with me.
"May the LORD<3068> grant<5414> that you may find<4672> rest<4496>, each<802> in the house<1004> of her husband<376>." Then she kissed<5401> them, and they lifted<5375> up their voices<6963> and wept<1058>.
And they said<559> to her, "No, but we will surely<3588> return<7725> with you to your people<5971>."
But Naomi<5281> said<559>, "Return<7725>, my daughters<1323>. Why<4100> should you go<1980> with me? Have I yet<5750> sons<1121> in my womb<4578>, that they may be your husbands<376>?
"Return<7725>, my daughters<1323>! Go<1980>, for I am<2204> too<4480> old<2204> to have<1961> a husband<376>. If<3588> I said<559> I have<3426> hope<8615>, if I should even<1571> have<1961> a husband<376> tonight<3915> and also<1571> bear<3205> sons<1121>,
would you therefore<3860> wait<7663> until<5704><834> they were grown<1431>? Would you therefore<3860> refrain<5702> from marrying<1166><1961><376>? No<408>, my daughters<1323>; for it is harder<3966><4843> for me than<4480> for you, for the hand<3027> of the LORD<3068> has gone<3318> forth<3318> against me."
And they lifted<5375> up their voices<6963> and wept<1058> again<5750>; and Orpah<6204> kissed<5401> her mother-in-law<2545>, but Ruth<7327> clung<1692> to her.
Then she said<559>, "Behold<2009>, your sister-in-law<2994> has gone<7725> back<7725> to her people<5971> and her gods<430>; return<7725> after<310> your sister-in-law<2994>."
But Ruth<7327> said<559>, "Do not urge<6293> me to leave<5800> you or turn<7725> back<7725> from following<310> you; for where<413><834> you go<1980>, I will go<1980>, and where<834> you lodge<3885>, I will lodge<3885>. Your people<5971> shall be my people<5971>, and your God<430>, my God<430>.
"Where<834> you die<4191>, I will die<4191>, and there<8033> I will be buried<6912>. Thus<3541> may the LORD<3068> do<6213> to me, and worse<3541><3254>, if<3588> anything but death<4194> parts<6504> you and me."
When she saw<7200> that she was determined<553> to go<1980> with her, she said<1696> no<2308> more to her.
So they both<8147> went<1980> until<5704> they came<935> to Bethlehem<1035>. And when they had come<935> to Bethlehem<1035>, all<3605> the city<5892> was stirred<1949> because<5921> of them, and the women said<559>, "Is this<2088> Naomi<5281>?"
She said<559> to them, "Do not call<7121> me Naomi<5281>; call<7121> me Mara<4755>, for the Almighty<7706> has dealt<4843> very<3966> bitterly<4843> with me.
"I went<1980> out full<4392>, but the LORD<3068> has brought<7725> me back<7725> empty<7387>. Why<4100> do you call<7121> me Naomi<5281>, since the LORD<3068> has witnessed<6030> against me and the Almighty<7706> has afflicted<7489> me?"
So Naomi<5281> returned<7725>, and with her Ruth<7327> the Moabitess<4125>, her daughter-in-law<3618>, who returned<7725> from the land<7704> of Moab<4124>. And they came<935> to Bethlehem<1035> at the beginning<8462> of barley<8184> harvest<7105>.
