So <1063> I made up <2919> my own mind <1683> not <3361> to pay you <5209> another <3825> painful <1722> <3077> visit <2064>.
For <1063> if <1487> I <1473> make <3076> you <5209> sad <3076>, who <5101> would be left to make <2165> me <3165> glad <2165> but the one I <1700> caused to be sad <3076>?
And <2532> I wrote <1125> this <5124> very thing <846> to you, so that <2443> when <2064> I came <2064> I would <2192> not <3361> have <2192> sadness <3077> from <575> those who <3739> ought <1163> to make <5463> me <3165> rejoice <5463>, since I am confident <3982> in <1909> you <5209> all <3956> that <3754> my <1699> joy <5479> would be <1510> yours <5216>.
For <1063> out of <1537> great <4183> distress <2347> and <2532> anguish <4928> of heart <2588> I wrote <1125> to you <5213> with <1223> many <4183> tears <1144>, not <3756> to <2443> make you sad <3076>, but <235> to <2443> let you know <1097> the love <26> that <3739> I have <2192> especially <4056> for <1519> you <5209>.
But <1161> if <1487> anyone <5100> has caused sadness <3076>, he has <3076> not <3756> saddened <3076> me alone <1691>, but <235> to <575> some extent <3313> (not <3361> to exaggerate <1912>) he has saddened all <3956> of you <5209> as well.
This <3778> punishment <2009> on such an individual <5108> by <5259> the majority <4119> is enough <2425> for him,
so that <5620> now instead <5121> you <5209> should rather forgive <5483> and <2532> comfort <3870> him. This will keep him from being overwhelmed <2666> by excessive <4053> grief <3077> to the point of despair.
Therefore <1352> I urge <3870> you <5209> to reaffirm <2964> your love <26> for <1519> him <846>.
For <1063> this reason <5124> also <2532> I wrote <1125> you: to <2443> test <1097> <1382> you <5216> to see if <1487> you are <1510> obedient <5255> in <1519> everything <3956>.
If you forgive <5483> anyone for anything, I also <2504> forgive him– for <1063> indeed what <3739> I <1473> have forgiven <5483> (if <1487> I have forgiven <5483> anything) I did so for <1223> you <5209> in <1722> the presence <4383> of Christ <5547>,
so that <2443> we may <4122> not <3361> be exploited <4122> by <5259> Satan <4567> (for <1063> we are <50> not <3756> ignorant <50> of his <846> schemes <3540>).
Now when I arrived <2064> in <1519> Troas <5174> to <1519> proclaim the gospel <2098> of Christ <5547>, even though <2532> the Lord <2962> had opened <455> a door <2374> of opportunity for me <3427>,
I had <2192> no <3756> relief <425> in my <3450> spirit <4151>, because I did <2147> not <3361> find <2147> my <3450> brother <80> Titus <5103> there. So I said good-bye <657> to them <846> and <235> set out <1831> for <1519> Macedonia <3109>.
But <1161> thanks <5485> be to God <2316> who always <3842> leads <2358> us <2248> in triumphal procession <2358> in <1722> Christ <5547> and <2532> who makes known <5319> through <1223> us <2257> the fragrance <3744> that consists of the knowledge <1108> of him <846> in <1722> every <3956> place <5117>.
For <3754> we are <1510> a sweet aroma <2175> of Christ <5547> to God <2316> among <1722> those who are being saved <4982> and <2532> among <1722> those who are perishing <622>–
to the latter an odor <3744> from <1537> death <2288> to <1519> death <2288>, but <1161> to the former a fragrance <3744> from <1537> life <2222> to <1519> life <2222>. And <2532> who is adequate <2425> for <4314> these things <5023>?
For <1063> we are <1510> not <3756> like <5613> so many <4183> others, hucksters who peddle <2585> the word <3056> of God <2316> for profit <2585>, but <235> we are speaking <2980> in <1722> Christ <5547> before <2713> God <2316> as <5613> persons of <1537> sincerity <1505>, as <5613> persons sent from <1537> God <2316>.
