The king <04428> summoned <0622> all <03605> the leaders <02205> of Judah <03063> and Jerusalem <03389>.
The king <04428> went up <05927> to the Lord’s <03068> temple <01004>, accompanied by all <03605> the people <0376> of Judah <03063>, all <03605> the residents <03427> of Jerusalem <03389>, the priests <03548>, and the prophets <05030>. All <03605> the people <05971> were there, from the youngest <06996> to <05704> the oldest <01419>. He read <07121> aloud <0241> all <03605> the words <01697> of the scroll <05612> of the covenant <01285> that had been discovered <04672> in the Lord’s <03068> temple <01004>.
The king <04428> stood <05975> by <05921> the pillar <05982> and renewed <03772> the covenant <01285> before <06440> the Lord <03068>, agreeing <01980> to follow <0310> the Lord <03068> and to obey <08104> his commandments <04687>, laws <05715>, and rules <02708> with all <03605> his heart <03820> and being <05315>, by carrying out <06965> the terms <01697> of this <02063> covenant <01285> recorded <03789> on <05921> this <02088> scroll <05612>. All <03605> the people <05971> agreed <05975> to keep the covenant <01285>.
The king <04428> ordered <06680> Hilkiah <02518> the high <01419> priest <03548>, the high-ranking <04932> priests <03548>, and the guards <05592> to bring out <03318> of the Lord’s <03068> temple <01964> all <03605> the items <03627> that were used <06213> in the worship of Baal <01168>, Asherah <0842>, and all <03605> the stars <06635> of the sky <08064>. The king burned <08313> them outside <02351> of Jerusalem <03389> in the terraces <07709> of Kidron <06939>, and carried <05375> their ashes <06083> to Bethel <01008>.
He eliminated <07673> the pagan priests <03649> whom <0834> the kings <04428> of Judah <03063> had appointed to offer <05414> sacrifices <06999> on the high places <01116> in the cities <05892> of Judah <03063> and in the area right around <04524> Jerusalem <03389>. (They offered sacrifices <06999> to Baal <01168>, the sun <08121> god, the moon <03394> god, the constellations <04208>, and all <03605> the stars <06635> in the sky <08064>.)
He removed <03318> the Asherah pole <0842> from the Lord’s <03068> temple <01004> and took it outside <02351> Jerusalem <03389> to <0413> the Kidron <06939> Valley <05158>, where he burned <08313> it. He smashed <01854> it to dust <06083> and then threw <07993> the <0853> dust <06083> in <05921> the public <05971> <01121> graveyard <06913>.
He tore down <05422> the quarters <01004> of the male cultic prostitutes <06945> in the Lord’s <03068> temple <01004>, where <0834> women <0802> were weaving <0707> shrines <01004> for Asherah <0842>.
He brought <0935> all <03605> the priests <03548> from the cities <05892> of Judah <03063> and ruined <02930> the high places <01116> where <08033> the priests <03548> had <0834> offered sacrifices <06999>, from <05704> Geba <01387> to <05704> Beer Sheba <0884>. He tore down <05422> the high place <01116> of the goat idols situated at <0834> the entrance <06607> of the gate <08179> of Joshua <03091>, the city <05892> official <08269>, on <05921> the left side <08040> of the city <05892> gate <08179>.
(Now the priests <03548> of the high places <01116> did not <03808> go up <05927> to <0413> the altar <04196> of the Lord <03068> in Jerusalem <03389>, but <0518> they did eat <0398> unleavened <04682> cakes among <08432> their fellow <0251> priests.)
The king ruined <02930> Topheth <08612> in the Valley <01516> of Ben <01121> Hinnom <02011> so that no <01115> one <0376> could pass <05674> his son <01121> or his daughter <01323> through the fire <0784> to Molech <04432>.
He removed <07673> from the entrance <0935> to <0413> the Lord’s <03068> temple <01004> the statues of horses <05483> that <0834> the kings <04428> of Judah <03063> had placed <05414> there in honor of the sun <08121> god. (They were kept near the room <03957> of Nathan Melech <05419> the eunuch <05631>, which <0834> was situated among the courtyards <06503>.) He burned up <08313> the chariots <04818> devoted to the sun <08121> god.
The king <04428> tore down <05422> the altars <04196> the kings <04428> of Judah <03063> had set up <06213> on <05921> the roof <01406> of Ahaz’s <0271> upper room <05944>, as well as the altars <04196> Manasseh <04519> had set up <06213> in the two <08147> courtyards <02691> of the Lord’s <03068> temple <01004>. He crushed <07323> them up <07323> and threw <07993> the dust <06083> in <0413> the Kidron <06939> Valley <05158>.
The king <04428> ruined the high places <01116> east of Jerusalem <03389>, south <03225> of the Mount <02022> of Destruction <04889>, that <0834> King <04428> Solomon <08010> of Israel <03478> had built <01129> for the detestable <08251> Sidonian <06722> goddess Astarte <06253>, the detestable <08251> Moabite <04124> god Chemosh <03645>, and the horrible <08441> Ammonite <05983> <01121> god Milcom <04445>.
He smashed <07665> the sacred pillars <04676> to bits, cut down <03772> the Asherah pole <0842>, and filled <04390> those shrines <04725> with human <0120> bones <06106>.
He also <01571> tore down <0853> the altar <04196> in Bethel <01008> at the high place <01116> made <06213> by Jeroboam <03379> son <01121> of Nebat <05028>, who encouraged Israel <03478> to sin <02398>. He burned <08313> all the combustible items <01116> at that high place <01116> and crushed <01854> them to dust <06083>; including the Asherah pole <0842>.
When Josiah <02977> turned around <06437>, he saw <07200> the tombs <06913> there <08033> on the hill <02022>. So he ordered <07971> the bones <06106> from <04480> the tombs <06913> to be brought <03947>; he burned <08313> them on <05921> the altar <04196> and defiled <02930> it. This fulfilled the Lord’s <03068> announcement <01697> made by the prophet <0376> while <0834> Jeroboam stood by the altar during a festival. King Josiah turned and saw the grave of the prophet <0430> who <0834> had foretold <07121> this <0428>.
He asked <0559>, “What <04100> is this <01975> grave marker <06725> I <0589> see <07200>?” The men <0376> from the city <05892> replied <0559>, “It’s the grave <06913> of the prophet <0430> <0376> who <0834> came <0935> from Judah <03063> and foretold <07121> these <0428> very things <01697> you have done <06213> to <05921> the altar <04196> of Bethel <01008>.”
The king said <0559>, “Leave <03240> it alone <03240>! No <0408> one <0376> must touch <05128> his bones <06106>.” So they left <04422> his bones <06106> undisturbed <04422>, as well as <0854> the bones <06106> of the Israelite prophet <05030> buried beside him.
Josiah <02977> also <01571> removed <05493> all <03605> the shrines <01004> on the high places <01116> in the cities <05892> of Samaria <08111>. The kings <04428> of Israel <03478> had made <06213> them and angered <03707> the Lord. He did <06213> to them <01992> what <04639> he had done <06213> to the high place in Bethel <01008>.
He sacrificed <02076> all <03605> the priests <03548> of the high places <01116> on <05921> the altars <04196> located there <08033>, and burned <08313> human <0120> bones <06106> on <05921> them. Then he returned <07725> to Jerusalem <03389>.
The king <04428> ordered <06680> all <03605> the people <05971>, “Observe <06213> the Passover <06453> of the Lord <03068> your God <0430>, as prescribed <03789> in <05921> this <02088> scroll <05612> of the covenant <01285>.”
He issued this edict because <03588> a Passover <06453> like this <02088> had not <03808> been observed <06213> since the days <03117> of the judges <08199>; it was neglected for the entire <03605> period <03117> of the kings <04428> of Israel <03478> and Judah <03063>.
But <0518> in the eighteenth <06240> <08083> year <08141> of King <04428> Josiah’s <02977> reign, such a Passover <06453> of the Lord <03068> was observed in Jerusalem <03389>.
Josiah also <01571> got rid of the ritual pits used to conjure up spirits <0178>, the magicians <03049>, personal idols <08655>, disgusting images <01544>, and all <03605> the detestable idols <08251> that <0834> had appeared <07200> in the land <0776> of Judah <03063> and in Jerusalem <03389>. In this way he <02977> carried out <06965> <01197> the terms <01697> of the law <08451> recorded <03789> on <05921> the scroll <05612> that <0834> Hilkiah <02518> the priest <03548> had discovered <04672> in the Lord’s <03068> temple <01004>.
No <03808> king <04428> before or after repented <07725> before <06440> the Lord <03068> as he did, with <0413> his whole <03605> heart <03824>, soul <05315>, and being in accordance with the whole <03605> law <08451> of Moses <04872>.
Yet <0389> the Lord’s <03068> great <01419> anger <0639> <02740> against Judah <03063> did not <03808> subside <07725>; he was still infuriated <0639> <02734> by <05921> all <03605> the things Manasseh <04519> had done <03707>.
The Lord <03068> announced <0559>, “I will also <01571> spurn <05493> Judah <03063>, just as <0834> I spurned <05493> Israel <03478>. I will reject <03988> this <02063> city <05892> that <0834> I chose <0977>– both Jerusalem <03389> and the temple <01004>, about which <0834> I said <0559>, “I will <01961> live <08034> there <08033>.”
The rest <03499> of the events <01697> of Josiah’s <02977> reign and all <03605> his accomplishments <06213> are recorded <03789> in <05921> the scroll <05612> called the Annals <03117> <01697> of the Kings <04428> of Judah <03063>.
During <03117> Josiah’s reign <03117> Pharaoh Necho <06549> king <04428> of Egypt <04714> marched <05927> toward <05921> the Euphrates <06578> River <05104> to help the king <04428> of Assyria <0804>. King <04428> Josiah <02977> marched out <01980> to fight <07125> him, but Necho killed <04191> him at Megiddo <04023> when he saw <07200> him.
His servants <05650> transported <07392> his dead body <04191> from Megiddo <04023> in a chariot and brought <0935> it to Jerusalem <03389>, where they buried <06912> him in his tomb <06900>. The people <05971> of the land <0776> took <03947> Josiah’s <02977> son <01121> Jehoahaz <03059>, poured olive oil on <04886> his head <04886>, and made <04427> him king <04427> in his father’s <01> place <08478>.
Jehoahaz <03059> was twenty-three <07969> <06242> years <08141> old <01121> when he became king, and he reigned <04427> three <07969> months <02320> in Jerusalem <03389>. His mother <0517> was Hamutal <02537> the daughter <01323> of Jeremiah <03414>, from Libnah <03841>.
He did <06213> evil <07451> in the sight <05869> of the Lord <03068> as <0834> his ancestors <01> had done <06213>.
Pharaoh Necho <06549> imprisoned <0631> him in Riblah <07247> in the land <0776> of Hamath <02574> and prevented him from ruling <04427> in Jerusalem <03389>. He imposed <06066> on <05921> the land <0776> a special tax of one hundred <03967> talents <03603> of silver <03701> and a talent <03603> of gold <02091>.
Pharaoh Necho <06549> made Josiah’s <02977> son <01121> Eliakim <0471> king <04427> in Josiah’s <02977> place <08478>, and changed <05437> his name <08034> to Jehoiakim <03079>. He took <03947> Jehoahaz <03059> to Egypt <04714>, where <08033> he died <04191>.
Jehoiakim <03079> paid <05414> Pharaoh <06547> the required amount of silver <03701> and gold <02091>, but <0389> to meet <05414> Pharaoh’s <06547> demands <06310> Jehoiakim had to tax <06186> the land <0776>. He collected <05065> an assessed amount <06187> from each man <0376> among the people <05971> of the land <0776> in order to pay <05414> Pharaoh Necho <06549>.
Jehoiakim <03079> was twenty-five <02568> <06242> years <08141> old <01121> when he became king, and he reigned <04427> for eleven <06240> years <08141> in Jerusalem <03389>. His mother <0517> was Zebidah <02080> the daughter <01323> of Pedaiah <06305>, from <04480> Rumah <07316>.
He did <06213> evil <07451> in the sight <05869> of the Lord <03068> as <0834> his ancestors <01> had done <06213>.
