On the first <0259> day <03117> of the sixth <08345> month <02320> of King <04428> Darius <01867>’ second <08147> year <08141>, the Lord <03068> spoke <01961> this message <01697> through <03027> the prophet <05030> Haggai <02292> to <0413> Zerubbabel <02216> son <01121> of Shealtiel <07597>, governor <06346> of Judah <03063>, and to <0413> the high <01419> priest <03548> Joshua <03091> son <01121> of Jehozadak <03087>:
The Lord <03068> who rules over all <06635> says <0559> this <03541>: “These <02088> people <05971> have said <0559>, ‘The time <06256> for rebuilding <01129> the Lord’s <03068> temple <01004> has not <03808> yet come <0935>.’”
So the Lord <03068> spoke <01697> through <03027> the prophet <05030> Haggai <02292> as follows <0559>:
“Is it right <06256> for you <0859> to live <03427> in richly paneled <05603> houses <01004> while my temple <01004> is in ruins <02720>?
Here <03541> then <06258> is what the Lord <03068> who rules over all <06635> says <0559>: ‘Think carefully about <05921> <03824> <07760> what you are doing <01870>.
You have planted <02232> much <07235>, but have harvested <0935> little <04592>. You eat <0398>, but are never <0369> filled <07654>. You drink <08354>, but are still <0369> thirsty <07937>. You put on clothes <03847>, but are not <0369> warm <02527>. Those who earn <07936> wages <07936> end up with holes <05344> in <0413> their money bags <06872>.’”
“Moreover <03541>, the Lord <03068> who rules over all <06635> says <0559>: ‘Pay close attention <03824> <07760> to <05921> these things <01870> also.
Go up <05927> to the hill country <02022> and bring <0935> back timber <06086> to build <01129> the temple <01004>. Then I will be pleased <07521> and honored <03513>,’ says <0559> the Lord <03068>.
‘You expected <0413> <06437> a large <07235> harvest, but instead <02009> there was little <04592>, and when you brought <0935> it home <01004> it disappeared <05301> right away. Why <04100> <03282>?’ asks <05002> the Lord <03069> who rules over all <06635>. ‘Because <03282> my <01931> temple <01004> remains in ruins <02720>, thanks to each <0376> of you <0859> favoring <07323> his own house <01004>!
This is why <03651> the sky <08064> has held back <03607> its dew <02919> and the earth <0776> its produce <02981>.
Moreover, I have called <07121> for a drought <02721> that will affect the fields <0776>, the hill country <02022>, the grain <01715>, new wine <08492>, fresh olive oil <03323>, and everything <0834> that grows <03318> from the ground <0127>; it also will harm people <0120>, animals <0929>, and everything <03605> they produce <03018>.’”
Then Zerubbabel <02216> son <01121> of Shealtiel <07597> and the high <01419> priest <03548> Joshua <03091> son <01121> of Jehozadak <03087>, along with the whole <03605> remnant <07611> of the people <05971>, obeyed <06963> the Lord <03068> their God <0430>. They responded favorably to the message <01697> of the prophet <05030> Haggai <02292>, who spoke just as the Lord <03068> their God <0430> had instructed <07971> him, and the people <05971> began to respect <03372> the Lord <03068>.
Then Haggai <02292>, the Lord’s <03068> messenger <04397>, spoke <0559> the Lord’s <03068> word <04400> to the people <05971>: “I <0589> am with <0854> you!” says <05002> the Lord <03068>.
So the Lord <03068> energized <05782> and encouraged <07307> Zerubbabel <02216> son <01121> of Shealtiel <07597>, governor <06346> of Judah <03063>, the high <01419> priest <03548> Joshua <03091> son <01121> of Jehozadak <03087>, and the whole <03605> remnant <07611> of the people <05971>. They came <0935> and worked <04399> on the temple <01004> of their God <0430>, the Lord <03068> who rules over all <06635>.
This took place on the twenty-fourth <0702> <06242> day <03117> of the sixth <08345> month <02320> of King <04428> Darius <01867>’ second <08147> year <08141>.
