These <0428> are the names <08034> of the sons <01121> of Israel <03478> who entered <0935> Egypt <04714>– each man <0376> with his household <01004> entered <0935> with <0854> Jacob <03290>:
Reuben <07205>, Simeon <08095>, Levi <03878>, and Judah <03063>,
Issachar <03485>, Zebulun <02074>, and Benjamin <01144>,
Dan <01835> and Naphtali <05321>, Gad <01410> and Asher <0836>.
All <03605> the people <05315> who were directly descended <03318> from Jacob <03290> numbered seventy <07657>. But Joseph <03130> was <01961> already in Egypt <04714>,
and in time Joseph <03130> and his brothers <0251> and all <03605> that generation <01755> died <04191>.
The Israelites <03478> <01121>, however, were fruitful <06509>, increased greatly <08317>, multiplied <07235>, and became <06105> extremely <03966> <03966> strong <06105>, so that the land <0776> was filled <04390> with <0854> them.
Then a new <02319> king <04428>, who <0834> did not <03808> know <03045> about Joseph <03130>, came to power <06965> over <05921> Egypt <04714>.
He said <0559> to <0413> his people <05971>, “Look <02009> at the Israelite <03478> <01121> people <05971>, more numerous <07227> and stronger <06099> than <04480> we are!
Come <03051>, let’s deal wisely <02449> with them. Otherwise <06435> they will continue <01961> to multiply <07235>, and if <03588> a war <04421> breaks out <07122>, they will ally <03254> themselves <01931> with <05921> our enemies <08130> and fight <03898> against us and leave <05927> the country <0776>.”
So they put <07760> foremen <04522> <08269> over <05921> the Israelites to <04616> oppress <06031> them with hard labor <05450>. As a result they built <01129> Pithom <06619> and Rameses <07486> as store <04543> cities <05892> for Pharaoh <06547>.
But <0834> the more <03651> the Egyptians oppressed <06031> them, the more <03651> they multiplied <07235> and spread <06555>. As a result <06440> the Egyptians loathed <06973> the Israelites <03478> <01121>,
and they <04713> made the Israelites <03478> <01121> serve <05647> rigorously <06531>.
They made <04843> their lives <02416> bitter <04843> by hard <07186> service <05656> with mortar <02563> and bricks <03843> and by all <03605> kinds of service <05656> in the fields <07704>. Every <03605> kind of service <05656> the Israelites were required to give <05647> was rigorous <06531>.
The king <04428> of Egypt <04714> said <0559> to the Hebrew <05680> midwives <03205>, one <0259> of whom <0834> was named <08034> Shiphrah <08236> and the other <08145> Puah <06326>,
“When you assist <0559> the Hebrew <05680> women in childbirth <03205>, observe <07200> at the delivery <070>: If <0518> it is a son <01121>, kill <04191> him, but if <0518> it is a daughter <01323>, she <01931> may live <02425>.”
But the midwives <03205> feared <03372> God <0430> and did not <03808> do <06213> what <0834> the king <04428> of Egypt <04714> had told <01696> them; they let the boys <03206> live <02421>.
Then the king <04428> of Egypt <04714> summoned <07121> the midwives <03205> and said <0559> to them, “Why <04069> have you done <06213> this <02088> and let the boys <03206> live <02421>?”
The midwives <03205> said <0559> to <0413> Pharaoh <06547>, “Because <03588> the Hebrew women <05680> are not <03808> like the Egyptian <04713> women <0802>– for <03588> the Hebrew women are vigorous <02422>; they <02007> give birth <03205> before <02962> the midwife <03205> gets <0935> to <0413> them!”
So God <0430> treated <03190> the midwives <03205> well <03190>, and the people <05971> multiplied <07235> and became <06105> very <03966> strong <06105>.
And because <03588> the midwives <03205> feared <03372> God <0430>, he made <06213> households <01004> for them.
Then Pharaoh <06547> commanded <06680> all <03605> his people <05971>, “All <03605> sons <01121> that are born <03209> you must throw <07993> into the river <02975>, but all <03605> daughters <01323> you may let live <02421>.”
