א (Alef <0589>) I am the <01397> man who has <07200> experienced <06040> affliction from the <07626> rod of his <05678>
He drove <05090> me into captivity and made me walk <01980> in darkness <02822> and not <03808> light <0216>.
He repeatedly <07725> attacks me, he turns <02015> his hand <03027> against me all <03605> day <03117> long.
ב(Bet) He has made my mortal <01320> skin <05785> waste away <01086>; he has broken <07665> my bones <06106>.
He has besieged <05921> <01129> and surrounded <05362> me with bitter <07219> hardship <08513>.
He has made me reside <03427> in deepest darkness <04285> like those who died <04191> long ago <05769>.
ג(Gimel) He has walled <01443> me in <01157> so that I cannot <03808> get out <03318>; he has weighted <03513> me down <03513> with heavy prison chains <05178>.
Also <01571>, when <03588> I cry out <07768> desperately <02199> for help <07768>, he has shut out <05640> my prayer <08605>.
He has blocked <01443> every road <01870> I take with a wall of hewn stones <01496>; he has made every path <05410> impassable <05753>.
ד(Dalet) To me he is <01931> like a bear <01677> lying in ambush <0693>, like a hidden <04565> lion <0738> stalking its prey.
He has obstructed <05493> my paths <01870> and torn <06582> me to pieces <06582>; he has made <07760> me desolate <08076>.
He drew <01869> his bow <07198> and made <05324> me the target <04307> for his arrow <02671>.
ה(He) He shot his arrows <0827> <01121> into <0935> my heart <03629>.
I have become <01961> the laughingstock <07814> of all <03605> people <05971>, their mocking song <05058> all <03605> day <03117> long.
He has given <07646> me my fill <07646> of bitter herbs <04844> and made <07301> me drunk <07301> with bitterness <03939>.
ו(Vav) He ground <01638> my teeth <08127> in gravel <02687>; he trampled <03728> me in the dust <0665>.
I am deprived <02186> of peace <07965>; I have forgotten <05382> what happiness <02896> is.
So I said <0559>, “My endurance <05331> has expired <06>; I have lost all hope <08431> of deliverance from the Lord <03068>.”
ז(Zayin) Remember <02142> my impoverished <06040> and homeless condition <04788>, which is a bitter <03939> poison <07219>.
I continually think <02142> <02142> about this, and I <05315> am depressed <05921> <07743>.
But this <02063> I call <07725> to <0413> mind <03820>; therefore <03651> <05921> I have hope <03176>:
ח(Khet) The Lord’s <03068> loyal kindness <02617> never ceases; his compassions <07356> never end.
They are fresh <02319> every morning <01242>; your faithfulness <0530> is abundant <07227>!
“My portion <02506> is the Lord <03068>,” I have said <0559> to myself <05315>, so <03651> I will put <03176> my hope <03176> in <05921> him.
ט(Tet) The Lord <03068> is good <02896> to those who trust <06960> in him, to the one <05315> who seeks <01875> him.
It is good <02896> to wait patiently <01748> for deliverance <08668> from the Lord <03068>.
It is good <02896> for <03588> a man <01397> to bear <05375> the yoke <05923> while he is young <05271>.
י(Yod) Let a person sit <03427> alone <0910> in silence <01826>, when <03588> the Lord is disciplining <05190> him.
Let <05414> him bury <05414> his face <06310> in the dust <06083>; perhaps <0194> there is <03426> hope <08615>.
Let him offer <05414> his cheek <03895> to the one who hits <05221> him; let him have his fill <07646> of insults <02781>.
כ(Kaf) For <03588> the Lord <0136> will not <03808> reject <02186> us forever <05769>.
Though <0518> <03588> he causes <03013> us grief <03013>, he then has compassion <07355> on us according to the abundance <07230> of his loyal kindness <02617>.
For <03588> he is not <03808> predisposed <03820> to afflict <06031> or to grieve <03013> people <0376> <01121>.
ל(Lamed) To crush <01792> underfoot <07272> <08478> all <03605> the earth’s <0776> prisoners <0615>,
to deprive <05186> a person <01397> of his rights <04941> in the presence <06440> <05048> of the Most High <05945>,
to defraud <05791> a person <0120> in a lawsuit <07379>– the Lord <0136> does not <03808> approve <07200> of such things!
מ(Mem) Whose <04310> command <0559> was ever fulfilled <01961> unless <03808> the Lord <0136> decreed <06680> it?
Is it not <03808> from the mouth <06310> of the Most High <05945> that everything comes <03318>– both calamity <07451> and blessing <02896>?
Why <04100> should any living <02416> person <0120> complain <0596> when punished for his sins <02399>?
נ(Nun) Let us carefully examine <02713> <02664> our ways <01870>, and let us return <07725> to <05704> the Lord <03068>.
Let us lift up <05375> our hearts <03824> and our hands <03709> to <0413> God <0410> in heaven <08064>:
“We <05168> have blatantly rebelled <04784> <06586>; you <0859> have not <03808> forgiven <05545>.”
ס(Samek) You shrouded <05526> yourself with anger <0639> and then pursued <07291> us; you killed <02026> without <03808> mercy <02550>.
You shrouded <05526> yourself with a cloud <06051> so that no prayer <08605> can get through <05674>.
You make <07760> us like filthy scum <03973> <05501> in the estimation <07130> of the nations <05971>.
פ(Pe) All <03605> our enemies <0341> have gloated <06475> over <05921> us;
Panic <06343> and pitfall <06354> have come <01961> upon us, devastation <07612> and destruction <07667>.
Streams <06388> of tears <04325> flow <03381> from my eyes <05869> because my people <05971> <01323> are destroyed <07667>.
ע(Ayin) Tears flow <05064> from my eyes <05869> and will not <03808> stop <01820>; there will be no <0369> break <02014>
until <05704> the Lord <03068> looks down <08259> from heaven <08064> and sees <07200> what has happened.
What my eyes <05869> see grieves <05953> me– all <03605> the suffering of the daughters <01323> in my city <05892>.
צ(Tsade) For no good reason <02600> my enemies <0341> hunted <06679> <06679> me down <06679> <06679> like a bird <06833>.
They shut <06789> me <02416> up <06789> in a pit <0953> and threw <03034> stones <068> at me.
The waters <04325> closed <06687> over <05921> my head <07218>; I thought <0559> I was about to die <01504>.
ק(Qof) I have called <07121> on your name <08034>, O Lord <03068>, from the deepest <08482> pit <0953>.
You heard <08085> my plea <06963>: “Do not <0408> close <05956> your ears <0241> to my cry <07775> for relief <07309>!”
You came near <07126> on the day <03117> I called <07121> to you; you said <0559>, “Do not <0408> fear <03372>!”
ר(Resh) O Lord <0136>, you championed <07378> my <05315> cause <07379>, you redeemed <01350> my life <02416>.
You have seen <07200> the wrong done <05792> to me, O Lord <03068>; pronounce <08199> judgment <04941> on my behalf!
You have seen <07200> all <03605> their vengeance <05360>, all <03605> their plots <04284> against me.
ש(Sin/Shin) You have heard their <08085> taunts, O <02781> Lord, all <03068> their <03605> plots against <04284> me <05921>.
My assailants revile <06965> and conspire <01902> <08193> against <05921> me all <03605> day <03117> long.
Watch <05027> them <03427> from morning <07012> to evening; I <0589> am the object of their mocking songs <04485>.
ת(Tav) Pay <07725> them back <07725> what they deserve <01576>, O Lord <03068>, according to what <04639> they have done <04639>.
Give <05414> them <01992> a distraught <04044> heart <03820>; may your curse <08381> be on them <01992>!
Pursue <07291> them in anger <0639> and eradicate <08045> them from under <08478> the Lord’s <03068> heaven <08064>.
