Dual Panel1If <03588> controversy <07379> arises <01961> between <0996> people <0582>, they should go <05066> to <0413> court for judgment <04941>. When the judges <08199> hear the case, they shall exonerate <06663> the innocent <06662> but condemn <07561> the guilty <07563>.
2Then <01961>, if <0518> the guilty person <07563> is sentenced <01121> to a beating <05221>, the judge <08199> shall force him to lie down <05307> and be beaten <05221> in his presence <06440> with the number <04557> of blows his wicked behavior <07564> deserves <01767>.
3The judge may sentence him to forty <0705> blows <05221>, but no <03808> more <03254>. If <06435> he is struck <05221> with <05921> more <03254> than these <0428>, you might view <05869> <07034> your fellow <0251> Israelite with contempt <05869> <07034>.
4You must not <03808> muzzle <02629> your ox <07794> when it is treading <01758> grain.
5If <03588> brothers <0251> live <03427> together <03162> and one <0259> of them <01992> dies <04191> without <0369> having a son <01121>, the dead <04191> man’s wife <0802> must not <03808> remarry <01961> someone <0376> outside <02351> the family. Instead, her late husband’s brother <02993> must go <0935> to <05921> her, marry <0802> <03947> her, and perform the duty of a brother-in-law <02992>.
6Then <01961> the first son <01060> she bears <03205> will continue <06965> the name <08034> of the dead <04191> brother <0251>, thus preventing <03808> his name <08034> from being blotted out <04229> of Israel <03478>.
7But if <0518> the man <0376> does not <03808> want <02654> to marry <03947> his brother’s widow <02994>, then she <02994> must go <05927> to <0413> the elders <02205> at the town gate <08179> and say <0559>, “My husband’s brother <02993> refuses <03985> to preserve <06965> his brother’s <0251> name <08034> in Israel <03478>; he is unwilling <014> <03808> to perform the duty of a brother-in-law <02992> to me!”
8Then the elders <02205> of his city <05892> must summon <07121> him and speak <01696> to <0413> him. If he persists <05975>, saying <0559>, “I don’t <03808> want <02654> to marry <03947> her,”
9then his sister-in-law <02994> must approach <05066> him in view <05869> of the elders <02205>, remove <02502> his sandal <05275> from <05921> his foot <07272>, and spit <03417> in his face <06440>. She will then respond <06030>, “Thus <03602> may it be done <06213> to any man <0376> who <0834> does not <03808> maintain <01129> his brother’s <0251> family line <01004>!”
10His family name <08034> will be referred <07121> to in Israel <03478> as “the family <01004> of the one whose sandal <05275> was removed <02502>.”
11If <03588> two men <0251> <0376> <0376> get into <07126> a hand-to-hand <03162> fight <05327>, and the wife <0802> of one <0259> of them gets involved <05337> to help her husband <0376> against his attacker <05221>, and she reaches out <07971> her hand <03027> and grabs <02388> his genitals <04016>,
12then you must cut off <07112> her hand <03709>– do not <03808> pity <05869> <02347> her.
13You must not <03808> have in your bag <03599> different stone <068> weights <068>, a heavy <01419> and a light <06996> one.
14You must not <03808> have <01961> in your house <01004> different measuring containers <0374> <0374>, a large <01419> and a small <06996> one.
15You must have <01961> an accurate <08003> and correct <06664> stone weight <068> and an accurate <08003> and correct <06664> measuring container <0374>, so that <04616> your life <03117> may be extended <0748> in <05921> the land <0127> the Lord <03068> your God <0430> is about to give <05414> you.
16For <03588> anyone <03605> who acts <06213> dishonestly <05766> in these <0428> ways <06213> is abhorrent <08441> to the Lord <03068> your God <0430>.
17Remember <02142> what <0834> the Amalekites <06002> did <06213> to you on your way <01870> from Egypt <04714>,
18how <0834> they met <07136> you along the way <01870> and cut off <02179> all <03605> your stragglers <02826> in the rear <0310> of the march when you <0859> were exhausted <05889> and tired <03023>; they were unafraid <03373> <03808> of God <0430>.
19So when <01961> the Lord <03068> your God <0430> gives <05117> you relief <05117> from all <03605> the enemies <0341> who surround <05439> you in the land <0776> he is giving <05414> you as an inheritance <05159>, you must wipe out <04229> the memory <02143> of the Amalekites <06002> from under <08478> heaven <08064>– do not <03808> forget <07911>!
