Jeremiah <03414> finished <03615> telling <01696> all <03605> the people <05971> all <03605> these things <01697> the Lord <03068> their God <0430> had sent <07971> him to <0413> tell them.
Then Azariah <05838> son <01121> of Hoshaiah <01955>, Johanan <03110> son <01121> of Kareah <07143>, and other arrogant <02086> men <0376> said <0559> to <0413> Jeremiah <03414>, “You <0859> are telling <01696> a lie <08267>! The Lord <03068> our God <0430> did not <03808> send <07971> you to tell <0559> us, ‘You must not <03808> go <0935> to Egypt <04714> and settle <01481> there <08033>.’
But <03588> Baruch <01263> son <01121> of Neriah <05374> is stirring <05496> you up <05496> against <04616> us. He wants to hand <05414> us over <05414> to the Babylonians <03778> so that they will kill <04191> us or carry <01540> us off into exile <01540> in Babylon <0894>.”
So Johanan <03110> son <01121> of Kareah <07143>, all <03605> the army <02428> officers <08269>, and all <03605> the rest of the people <05971> did not obey <08085> the Lord’s <03068> command <06963> to stay <03427> in the land <0776>.
Instead Johanan <03110> son <01121> of Kareah <07143> and all <03605> the army <02428> officers <08269> led off <03947> all <03605> the Judean <03063> remnant <07611> who <0834> had come back <07725> to live <01481> in the land <0776> of Judah <03063> from all <03605> the nations <01471> where <08033> <0834> they had been scattered <05080>.
They also led off all <03605> the men <01397>, women <0802>, children <02945>, and royal <04428> princesses <01323> that <0834> Nebuzaradan <05018>, the captain <07227> of the royal guard <02876>, had left <03240> with <0854> Gedaliah <01436>, the son <01121> of Ahikam <0296> and grandson <01121> of Shaphan <08227>. This included the prophet <05030> Jeremiah <03414> and Baruch <01263> son <01121> of Neriah <05374>.
They went <0935> on to Egypt <04714> because <03588> they refused <03808> to obey <06963> <08085> the Lord <03068>, and came <0935> to <05704> Tahpanhes <08471>.
At Tahpanhes <08471> the Lord <03068> spoke <01697> to <0413> Jeremiah <03414>.
“Take <03947> some large <01419> stones <068> and bury <02934> them in the mortar of the clay <04423> pavement <04404> at the entrance <06607> of Pharaoh’s <06547> residence <01004> here in Tahpanhes <08471>. Do it while the people <0582> of Judah <03064> present there are watching <05869>.
Then tell <0559> them, ‘The Lord <03068> God <0430> of Israel <03478> who rules over all <06635> says <0559>, “I will bring <03947> <07971> my servant <05650> King <04428> Nebuchadnezzar <05019> of Babylon <0894>. I will set <07760> his throne <03678> over <04605> these <0428> stones <068> which <0834> I have buried <02934>. He will pitch <05186> his royal tent <08237> over <05921> them.
He will come <0935> and attack <05221> Egypt <04714>. Those who <0834> are destined to die of disease <04194> will die of disease <04194>. Those who <0834> are destined to be carried off into exile <07628> will be carried off into exile <07628>. Those who <0834> are destined to die in war <02719> will die in war <02719>.
He will set <03341> fire <0784> to the temples <01004> of the gods <0430> of Egypt <04714>. He will burn <08313> their gods or carry <07617> them off as captives <07617>. He will pick <05844> Egypt <04714> clean like <0834> a shepherd <07462> picks <05844> the lice from his clothing <0899>. He will leave <03318> there <08033> unharmed <07965>.
He will demolish <07665> the sacred pillars <04676> in the temple of the sun <01053> in Egypt <04714> and will burn down <08313> the temples <01004> of the gods <0430> of Egypt <04714>.”’”
