This displeased <07489> Jonah <03124> terribly <01419> <07451> and he became very angry <02734>.
He prayed <06419> to <0413> the Lord <03069> and said <0559>, “Oh <0577>, Lord <03069>, this <02088> is just what <01697> I thought would happen when <05704> I was <01961> in <05921> my own country <0127>. This is what I tried to prevent <06923> by attempting to escape <01272> to Tarshish <08659>!– because <03588> I knew <03045> that <03588> you <0859> are gracious <02587> and compassionate <07349>, slow <0750> to anger <0639> and abounding <07227> in mercy <02617>, and one who relents <05162> concerning <05921> threatened judgment <07451>.
So now <06258>, Lord <03068>, kill <03947> me instead <04480>, because <03588> I would rather <02896> die <04194> than live <02416>!”
The Lord <03068> said <0559>, “Are you really so very angry <02734>?”
Jonah <03124> left <03318> the city <05892> and sat down <03427> east <06924> of it. He made <06213> a shelter <05521> for himself there <08033> and sat down <03427> under <08478> it in the shade <06738> to see <07200> what <04100> would happen <01961> to the city <05892>.
The Lord <03068> God <0430> appointed <04487> a little plant <07021> and caused it to grow up <05927> over <05921> Jonah <03124> to be <01961> a shade <06738> over <05921> his head <07218> to rescue <05337> him from his misery <07451>. Now Jonah <03124> was very <01419> delighted <08056> <08055> about <05921> the little plant <07021>.
So God <0430> sent <04487> a worm <08438> at dawn <07837> the next day <04283>, and it attacked <05221> the little plant <07021> so that it dried <03001> up.
When the sun <08121> began <04487> to shine <02224>, God <0430> sent a hot <02759> east <06921> wind <07307>. So the sun <08121> beat down <05221> on <05921> Jonah’s <03124> head <07218>, and he grew faint <05968>. So he despaired <04191> <07592> of life <05315>, and said <0559>, “I would rather <02896> die <04191> than <02896> live <02416>!”
God <0430> said <0559> to <0413> Jonah <03124>, “Are you really so very angry <02734> about the little plant <07021>?” And he said <0559>, “I am as angry <02734> as I could possibly be <04194> <05704>!”
The Lord <03068> said <0559>, “You <0859> were upset <02347> about this little plant <07021>, something for <05921> which <0834> you have not <03808> worked <05998> nor <03808> did you do anything to make it grow <01431>. It grew up <01431> overnight <03915> and died <06> the next day <03915> <01121>.
Should I <0589> not <03808> be even more concerned <02347> about Nineveh <05210>, this enormous <01419> city <05892>? There are <03426> more <07235> than one hundred twenty thousand <07239> people <0120> in it who <0834> do not <03808> know <03045> right <03225> from wrong <08040>, as well as many <07227> animals <0929>!”
