 <<  Amsal 21 >>

The king's heart is in the LORD's hand; like runnels of water, he turns it wherever he will.

A person's whole conduct may be right in his own eyes, but the LORD weighs up his motives.

To do what is right and just is more acceptable to the LORD than sacrifice.

Haughty looks and a proud heart -- these sins brand the wicked.

Forethought and diligence lead to profit as surely as rash haste leads to poverty.

He who makes a fortune by telling lies runs needlessly into the snares of death.

The wicked are caught up in their own violence, because they refuse to do what is just.

The criminal's conduct is devious; straight dealing is a sign of integrity.

Better to live on a corner of the housetop than share the house with a nagging wife.

The wicked are set on evil; even friends do not arouse their pity.

Simpletons learn wisdom when the insolent are punished; when the wise prosper they draw a lesson from it.

The Just One deals effectively with the wicked household, overturning the wicked to their ruin.

Whoever stops his ears at the cry of the helpless will himself cry for help and not be answered.

A gift given privily appeases anger; a present in secret allays great wrath.

When justice is done, honest folk rejoice, but it causes dismay among evildoers.

If someone takes leave of common sense he will come to rest in the company of the dead.

Love pleasure and you will end in want; one who loves wine and oil will never grow rich.

The wicked serve as a ransom for the righteous, so do the perfidious for the upright.

Better to live alone in the desert than with a nagging and ill-tempered wife!

The wise man has a houseful of fine and costly treasures; the stupid man will fritter them away.

He who perseveres in right conduct and loyalty finds life, prosperity, and honour.

He who is wise can attack a city full of armed men and undermine its boasted strength.

Keep a guard over your lips and tongue and you keep yourself out of trouble.

The conceited man is haughty, his name is insolence; overweening conceit marks all he does.

The sluggard's cravings will be the death of him, because his hands refuse to work;

all day long his cravings go unsatisfied, while the righteous give without stint.

Sacrifice from a wicked person is an abomination to the LORD, the more so when it is offered from impure motives.

A lying witness will be cut short, but a truthful witness will speak on.

A wicked person puts a bold face on it, whereas one who is upright looks to his ways.

Face to face with the LORD, wisdom, understanding, counsel avail nothing.

A horse may be made ready for the day of battle, but victory rests with the LORD.
