3Blessed <2128> be the God <2316> and <2532> Father <3962> of our <2257> Lord <2962> Jesus <2424> Christ <5547>! By <2596> his <846> great <4183> mercy <1656> he gave <313> us <2248> new birth <313> into <1519> a living <2198> hope <1680> through <1223> the resurrection <386> of Jesus <2424> Christ <5547> from <1537> the dead <3498>,
4that is, into <1519> an inheritance <2817> imperishable <862>, undefiled <283>, and <2532> unfading <263>. It is reserved <5083> in <1722> heaven <3772> for <1519> you <5209>,
5who by <1722> God’s <2316> power <1411> are protected <5432> through <1223> faith <4102> for <1519> a salvation <4991> ready <2092> to be revealed <601> in <1722> the last <2078> time <2540>.
6This brings you great joy <21>, although you may have to <1163> suffer <3076> for a short <3641> time <737> in <1722> various <4164> trials <3986>.
7Such trials show the proven character <1383> of your <5216> faith <4102>, which is much more valuable than <4186> gold <5553>– gold that is tested <1381> by <1223> fire <4442>, even though <1161> it is passing away <622>– and will bring <2147> praise <1868> and <2532> glory <1391> and <2532> honor <5092> when Jesus <2424> Christ <5547> is revealed <602>.
8You have <3708> not <3756> seen <3708> him, but you love <25> him <3739>. You do <3708> not <3361> see <3708> him now <737> but you believe in <4100> him, and so <1161> you rejoice <21> with an indescribable <412> and <2532> glorious <1392> joy <5479>,
9because you are attaining <2865> the goal <5056> of your faith <4102>– the salvation <4991> of your souls <5590>.
10Concerning <4012> this <3739> salvation <4991>, the prophets <4396> who predicted <4395> the grace <5485> that would come to <1519> you <5209> searched <1567> and <2532> investigated carefully <1830>.
11They probed <2045> into <1519> what <4169> person <5101> or <2228> time <2540> the Spirit <4151> of Christ <5547> within <1722> them <846> was indicating <1213> when <4303> he testified beforehand <4303> about the sufferings <3804> appointed for <1519> Christ <5547> and <2532> his subsequent glory <1391>.
12They were shown <601> that <3754> they were serving <1247> not <3756> themselves <1438> but <1161> you <5213>, in regard to the things now <3568> announced <312> to you <5213> through <1223> those who proclaimed the gospel <2097> to you <5209> by the Holy <40> Spirit <4151> sent <649> from <575> heaven <3772>– things angels <32> long <1937> to catch <3879> a glimpse of.
13Therefore <1352>, get <328> your <5216> minds <1271> ready for action <328> by being fully sober <3525>, and set your hope <1679> completely <5049> on <1909> the grace <5485> that will be brought <5342> to you <5213> when <1722> Jesus <2424> Christ <5547> is revealed <602>.
14Like <5613> obedient <5218> children <5043>, do <4964> not <3361> comply with <4964> the evil urges <1939> you used to follow <4386> in <1722> your <5216> ignorance <52>,
15but <235>, like <2596> the Holy One <40> who called <2564> you <5209>, become <1096> holy <40> yourselves <846> in <1722> all <3956> of your conduct <391>,
16for <1360> it is written <1125>, “You <3754> shall be <1510> holy <40>, because <3754> I <1473> am holy <40>.”
17And <2532> if <1487> you address <1941> as Father <3962> the one who impartially <678> judges <2919> according to <2596> each one’s <1538> work <2041>, live out <390> the time <5550> of your <5216> temporary residence <3940> here in <1722> reverence <5401>.
18You know <1492> that <3754> from <1537> your <5216> empty <3152> way of life <391> inherited from <3970> your ancestors <3970> you were ransomed <3084>– not <3756> by perishable <5349> things like silver <694> or <2228> gold <5553>,
19but <235> by precious <5093> blood <129> like <5613> that of an unblemished <299> and <2532> spotless <784> lamb <286>, namely Christ <5547>.
20He was foreknown <4267> before <4253> the foundation <2602> of the world <2889> but <1161> was manifested <5319> in <1909> these last <2078> times <5550> for <1223> your <5209> sake <1223>.
21Through <1223> him <846> you now trust <4103> in <1519> God <2316>, who raised <1453> him <846> from <1537> the dead <3498> and <2532> gave <1325> him <846> glory <1391>, so that <5620> your <5216> faith <4102> and <2532> hope <1680> are <1510> in <1519> God <2316>.
22You have purified <48> your <5216> souls <5590> by <1722> obeying <5218> the truth <225> in order to show <1519> sincere <505> mutual love <5360>. So love <25> one another <240> earnestly <1619> from <1537> a pure heart <2588>.
23You have been born anew <313>, not <3756> from <1537> perishable <5349> but <235> from imperishable <862> seed <4701>, through <1223> the living <2198> and <2532> enduring <3306> word <3056> of God <2316>.
24For <1360> all <3956> flesh <4561> is like <5613> grass <5528> and <2532> all <3956> its <846> glory <1391> like <5613> the flower <438> of the grass <5528>; the grass <5528> withers <3583> and <2532> the flower <438> falls off <1601>,
25but <1161> the word <4487> of <2962> the Lord <2962> endures <3306> forever <1519> <165>. And <1161> this <5124> is <1510> the word <4487> that was proclaimed <2097> to <1519> you <5209>.
