Hannah <02584> prayed <06419>, “My heart <03820> rejoices <05970> in the Lord <03068>; my horn <07161> is exalted <07311> high because of the Lord <03068>. I loudly denounce <05921> <06310> <07337> my enemies <0341>, for <03588> I am happy <08055> that you delivered <03444> me.
No one <0369> is holy <06918> like the Lord <03068>! There is no one <0369> other than <01115> you! There is no <0369> rock <06697> like our God <0430>!
Don’t <0408> keep speaking <01696> so arrogantly <01364> <01364>, letting proud <06277> talk come out <03318> of your mouth <06310>! For <03588> the Lord <03068> is a God <0410> who knows <01844>; he evaluates <08505> what people do <05949>.
The bows <07198> of warriors <01368> are shattered <02844>, but those who stumble <03782> find their strength <02428> reinforced <0247>.
Those who are well-fed <07649> hire <07936> themselves out to earn food <03899>, but the hungry <07457> no longer lack <02308>. Even <05704> the barren <06135> woman gives birth <03205> to seven <07651>, but the one with many <07227> children <01121> withers away <0535>.
The Lord <03068> both kills <04191> and gives life <02421>; he brings down <03381> to the grave <07585> and raises up <05927>.
The Lord <03068> impoverishes <03423> and makes wealthy <06238>; he humbles <08213> and he exalts <07311>.
He lifts <06965> the weak <01800> from the dust <06083>; he raises <07311> the poor <034> from the ash heap <0830> to seat <03427> them with <05973> princes <05081> and to bestow <05157> on them an honored position <03519> <03678>. The foundations <04690> of the earth <0776> belong to the Lord <03068>, and he has placed <07896> the world <08398> on <05921> them.
He watches over <08104> his holy ones <02623>, but the wicked <07563> are made speechless <01826> in the darkness <02822>, for <03588> it is not <03808> by one’s own strength <03581> that one <0376> prevails <01396>.
The Lord <03068> shatters <05181> his adversaries <07378>; he thunders <07481> against <05921> them from the heavens <08064>. The Lord <03068> executes judgment <01777> to the ends <0657> of the earth <0776>. He will strengthen <05797> <05414> his king <04428> and exalt <07311> the power <07161> of his anointed one <04899>.”
Then Elkanah <0511> went <01980> back home <01004> to <05921> Ramah <07414>. But the boy <05288> was <01961> serving <08334> the Lord <03068> under the supervision of <06440> Eli <05941> the priest <03548>.
The sons <01121> <01121> of Eli <05941> were wicked <01100> men. They did not <03808> recognize <03045> the Lord’s <03068> authority.
Now the priests <03548> would always treat the people <05971> in the following way: Whenever anyone <0376> <03605> was making <02076> a sacrifice <02077>, while the meat <01320> was boiling <01310>, the priest’s <03548> attendant <05288> would come <0935> with a three-pronged <08127> <07969> fork <04207> in his hand <03027>.
He would jab <05221> it into the basin <03595>, kettle <01731>, caldron <07037>, or <0176> <0176> <0176> pot <06517>, and everything <03605> that <0834> the fork <04207> brought up <05927> the priest <03548> would take <03947> for himself. This is what <03602> they used to do <06213> to all <03605> the Israelites <03478> when they came <0935> there <08033> to Shiloh <07887>.
Even <01571> before <02962> they burned <06999> the fat <02459>, the priest’s <03548> attendant <05288> would come <0935> and say <0559> to the person <0376> who was making <02076> the sacrifice <02076>, “Hand over <05414> some meat <01320> for the priest <03548> to roast <06740>! He won’t <03808> take <03947> boiled <01310> meat <01320> from <04480> you, but <03588> only <0518> raw <02416>.”
If the individual <0376> said <0559> to him <0413>, “First <03117> let the fat <02459> be burned away <06999> <06999>, and then take <03947> for yourself whatever <0834> you <05315> wish <08378>,” he would say <0559>, “No! Hand it over <05414> right now <06258>! If <0518> you don’t <03808>, I will take <03947> it forcibly <02394>!”
The sin <02403> of these young men <05288> was <01961> very <03966> great <01419> in the Lord’s <03068> sight <06440>, for <03588> they <0582> treated <05006> the Lord’s <03068> offering <04503> with contempt <05006>.
Now Samuel <08050> was ministering <08334> before <06440> the Lord <03068>. The boy <05288> was dressed <02296> in a linen <0906> ephod <0646>.
His mother <0517> used to make <06213> him a small <06996> robe <04598> and bring it up <05927> to him at regular intervals <03117> <03117> when she would go up <05927> with <0854> her husband <0376> to make <02076> the annual <03117> sacrifice <02077>.
Eli <05941> would bless <01288> Elkanah <0511> and his wife <0802> saying <0559>, “May the Lord <03068> raise up <07760> for you descendants <02233> from <04480> this <02063> woman <0802> to replace <08478> the one <07596> that she dedicated <07592> to the Lord <03068>.” Then they would go <01980> to their home <04725>.
So <03588> the Lord <03068> graciously attended <06485> to Hannah <02584>, and she was able to conceive <02029> and gave birth <03205> to three <07969> sons <01121> and two <08147> daughters <01323>. The boy <05288> Samuel <08050> grew up <01431> at <05973> the Lord’s <03068> sanctuary.
Now Eli <05941> was very <03966> old <02204> when he heard <08085> about everything <03605> that <0834> his sons <01121> used to do <06213> to all <03605> the people of Israel <03478> and how <0834> they used to have sex <07901> with <0854> the women <0802> who were stationed <06633> at the entrance <06607> to the tent <0168> of meeting <04150>.
He said <0559> to them, “Why <04100> do you behave <06213> in this <0428> way <01697>? For <0834> I <0595> hear <08085> about these evil <07451> things <01697> from all <03605> these <0428> people <05971>.
This ought not <0408> to be, my sons <01121>! For <03588> the report <08052> that <0834> I <0595> hear <08085> circulating <05674> among the Lord’s <03068> people <05971> is not <03808> good <02896>.
If <0518> a man <0376> sins <02398> against a man <0376>, one may appeal <06419> to God <0430> on his behalf. But if <0518> a man <0376> sins <02398> against the Lord <03068>, who <04310> then will intercede <06419> for him?” But Eli’s sons would not <03808> listen <06963> <08085> to their father <01>, for <03588> the Lord <03068> had decided <02654> to kill <04191> them.
Now the boy <05288> Samuel <08050> was growing <01432> <01980> up and finding favor <02896> both <01571> with <05973> the Lord <03068> and with <05973> people <0376>.
A man <0376> of God <0430> came <0935> to <0413> Eli <05941> and said <0559> to <0413> him, “This is what <03541> the Lord <03068> says <0559>: ‘Did I not plainly <01540> reveal <01540> myself to <0413> your ancestor’s <01> house <01004> when they were <01961> in Egypt <04714> in the house <01004> of Pharaoh <06547>?
I chose <0977> your ancestor from all <03605> the tribes <07626> of Israel <03478> to be my priest <03548>, to offer <05927> sacrifice on <05921> my altar <04196>, to burn <06999> incense <07004>, and to bear <05375> the ephod <0646> before <06440> me. I gave <05414> to your ancestor’s <01> house <01004> all <03605> the fire offerings <0801> made by the Israelites <03478> <01121>.
Why <04100> are you scorning <01163> my sacrifice <02077> and my offering <04503> that <0834> I commanded <06680> for my dwelling place <04583>? You have honored <03513> your sons <01121> more than <04480> you have me by having made yourselves fat <01254> from the best parts <07225> of all <03605> the offerings <04503> of my people <05971> Israel <03478>.’
Therefore <03651> the Lord <03068>, the God <0430> of Israel <03478>, says <05002>, ‘I really <0559> <0559> did say <0559> <0559> that your house <01004> and your ancestor’s <01> house <01004> would serve <06440> <01980> me forever <05769> <05704>.’ But now <06258> the Lord <03068> says <05002>, ‘May it never be <02486>! For <03588> I will honor <03513> those who honor <03513> me, but those who despise <0959> me will be cursed <07043>!
In fact, days <03117> are coming <0935> when I will remove <01438> your strength <02220> and the strength <02220> of your father’s <01> house <01004>. There will not be <01961> an old man <02205> in your house <01004>!
You will see <05027> trouble <06862> in my dwelling place <04583>! Israel <03478> will experience blessings <03190>, but there will not <03808> be <01961> an old man <02205> in your house <01004> for all <03605> time <03117>.
Any one <0376> of you that I do not <03808> cut off <03772> from <05973> my altar <04196>, I will cause <03615> your eyes <05869> to fail <03615> and will cause you grief <0109>. All <03605> of those born <04768> to your family <01004> will die <04191> in the prime <0376> of life <05315>.
This <02088> will be a confirming sign <0226> for you that <0834> will be fulfilled <0935> through your two <08147> sons <01121>, Hophni <02652> and Phinehas <06372>: in a single <0259> day <03117> they both <08147> will die <04191>!
Then I will raise up <06965> for myself a faithful <0539> priest <03548>. He will do <06213> what is in my heart <03824> and soul <05315>. I will build <01129> for him a secure <0539> dynasty <01004> and he will serve <01980> my chosen one <04899> for all <03605> time <03117>.
Everyone <03605> who remains <03498> in your house <01004> will come <0935> to bow <07812> before him for a little <095> money <03701> and for a scrap <03603> of bread <03899>. Each will say <0559>, ‘Assign <05596> me to <0413> a <0259> priestly task <03550> so I can eat <0398> a scrap <06595> of bread <03899>.’”
