After we tore <645> ourselves away <645> from <575> them <846>, we <2248> put out to sea <321>, and sailing a straight course <2113>, we came <2064> to <1519> Cos <2972>, on the next day <1836> to <1519> Rhodes <4499>, and from there <2547> to <1519> Patara <3959>.
We found <2147> a ship <4143> crossing over <1276> to <1519> Phoenicia <5403>, went aboard <1910>, and put out to sea <321>.
After <398> we sighted <398> Cyprus <2954> and <2532> left <2641> it <846> behind <2641> on our port side <2176>, we sailed on <4126> to <1519> Syria <4947> and <2532> put in <2718> at <1519> Tyre <5184>, because <1063> the ship <4143> was <1510> to unload <670> its cargo <1117> there <1566>.
After <429> we located <429> the disciples <3101>, we stayed <1961> there seven <2033> days <2250>. They repeatedly told <3004> Paul <3972> through <1223> the Spirit <4151> not <3361> to set foot <1910> in <1519> Jerusalem <2414>.
When <3753> our <2248> time <2250> was <1096> over <1822>, we left <1831> and went on <4198> our <2248> way <4311>. All <3956> of them, with <4862> their wives <1135> and <2532> children <5043>, accompanied us outside <1854> of the city <4172>. After kneeling down <5087> <1119> on <1909> the beach <123> and praying <4336>,
we said farewell <782> to one another <240>. Then <2532> we went aboard <1684> the ship <4143>, and <1161> they returned <5290> to <1519> their own homes <2398>.
We <2249> continued <1274> the voyage <4144> from <575> Tyre <5184> and arrived <2658> at <1519> Ptolemais <4424>, and <2532> when <782> we had greeted <782> the brothers <80>, we stayed <3306> with <3844> them <846> for one <1520> day <2250>.
On the next day <1887> we left <1831> and came <2064> to <1519> Caesarea <2542>, and <2532> entered <1525> the house <3624> of Philip <5376> the evangelist <2099>, who was <1510> one of <1537> the seven <2033>, and stayed <3306> with <3844> him <846>.
(He had <1510> four <5064> unmarried <3933> daughters <2364> who prophesied <4395>.)
While <1961> we remained <1961> there for a number <4119> of days <2250>, a prophet <4396> named <3686> Agabus <13> came down <2718> from <575> Judea <2449>.
He <2532> came <2064> to <4314> us <2248>, took <142> Paul’s <3972> belt <2223>, tied <1210> his own <1438> hands <5495> and feet <4228> with it, and <2532> said <2036>, “The Holy <40> Spirit <4151> says <3004> this <3592>: ‘This <3778> is the way <3779> the Jews <2453> in <1722> Jerusalem <2419> will tie up <1210> the man <435> whose <3739> belt <2223> this is <1510>, and <2532> will hand <3860> him over <3860> to <1519> the Gentiles <1484>.’”
When <5613> we heard <191> this <5023>, both <5037> we <2249> and <2532> the local <1786> people begged <3870> him <846> not <3361> to go up <305> to <1519> Jerusalem <2419>.
Then <5119> Paul <3972> replied <611>, “What <5101> are you doing <4160>, weeping <2799> and <2532> breaking <4919> my <3450> heart <2588>? For <1063> I <1473> am ready not <3756> only <3440> to be tied up <1210>, but <235> even <2532> to die <599> in <1519> Jerusalem <2419> for <5228> the name <3686> of the Lord <2962> Jesus <2424>.”
Because <1161> he <846> could <3982> not <3361> be persuaded <3982>, we said <2036> no more except <2270>, “The Lord’s <2962> will <2307> be done <1096>.”
After <3326> these <3778> days <2250> we got ready and started <643> up <305> to <1519> Jerusalem <2414>.
Some of the disciples <3101> from <575> Caesarea <2542> came along <4905> with <4862> us <2254> too, and brought <71> us to the house of Mnason <3416> of Cyprus <2953>, a disciple <3101> from the earliest times <744>, with whom <3739> we were to stay <3579>.
When <1096> we <2257> arrived <1096> in <1519> Jerusalem <2414>, the brothers <80> welcomed <588> us <2248> gladly <780>.
The next day <1966> Paul <3972> went in <1524> with <4862> us <2254> to see James <2385>, and <5037> all <3956> the elders <4245> were there <3854>.
When <2532> Paul had greeted <782> them <846>, he began to explain <1834> in detail <2596> <1520> <1538> what <3739> God <2316> had done <4160> among <1722> the Gentiles <1484> through <1223> his <846> ministry <1248>.
When <1161> they heard <191> this, they praised <1392> God <2316>. Then they said <3004> to him <846>, “You see <2334>, brother <80>, how many <4214> thousands <3461> of Jews <2453> there are <1510> who have believed <4100>, and <2532> they are <5225> all <3956> ardent observers <2207> of the law <3551>.
They have been informed <2727> about <4012> you <4675>– that <3754> you teach <1321> all <3956> the Jews <2453> now living among the Gentiles <1484> to abandon <646> Moses <3475>, telling <3004> them not <3361> to circumcise <4059> their <846> children <5043> or <3366> live <4043> according to our customs <1485>.
What <5101> then <3767> should we do? They will no doubt <3843> hear <191> that <3754> you have come <2064>.
So <3767> do <4160> what <3739> we tell <3004> you <4671>: We <2254> have four <5064> men <435> who have taken a vow <2171>;
take <3880> them <5128> and purify <48> yourself along <4862> with them <846> and <2532> pay <1159> their <846> expenses <1159>, so that <2443> they may have <3587> their heads <2776> shaved <3587>. Then <2532> everyone <3956> will know <1097> there is <1510> nothing <3762> in what <3739> they have been told <2727> about <4012> you <4675>, but <235> that you yourself live in conformity <5442> with the law <3551>.
But <1161> regarding the Gentiles <1484> who have believed <4100>, we <2249> have written a letter <649>, having decided <2919> that they <846> should avoid <5442> meat that has been sacrificed to idols <1494> and <2532> blood <129> and <2532> what has been strangled <4156> and <2532> sexual immorality <4202>.”
Then <5119> Paul <3972> took <3880> the men <435> the next <2192> day <2250>, and after <48> he had purified <48> himself along <4862> with them <846>, he went <1524> to <1519> the temple <2411> and gave notice <1229> of the completion <1604> of the days <2250> of purification <49>, when the sacrifice <4376> would be offered <4374> for <5228> each <1538> of them <846>.
When <5613> the seven <2033> days <2250> were almost over <4931>, the Jews <2453> from <575> the province of Asia <773> who had seen <2300> him <846> in <1722> the temple area <2411> stirred up <4797> the whole <3956> crowd <3793> and <2532> seized <1911> <5495> him <846>,
shouting <2896>, “Men <435> of Israel <2475>, help <997>! This <3778> is <1510> the man <444> who teaches <1321> everyone <3956> everywhere <3837> against <2596> our people <2992>, our law <3551>, and <2532> this <5127> sanctuary <5117>! Furthermore <2089> he has brought <1521> Greeks <1672> into <1519> the inner courts of the temple <2411> and <2532> made <2840> this <5126> holy <40> place <5117> ritually unclean <2840>!”
(For <1063> they had <1510> seen <4308> Trophimus <5161> the Ephesian <2180> in <1722> the city <4172> with <4862> him <846> previously, and they assumed <3543> Paul <3972> had brought <1521> him into <1519> the inner temple courts <2411>.)
The whole <3650> city <4172> was stirred up <2795>, and <2532> the people <2992> rushed together <4890>. They seized <1949> Paul <3972> and dragged <1670> him <846> out <1854> of the temple courts <2411>, and <2532> immediately <2112> the doors <2374> were shut <2808>.
While <2212> they were trying <2212> to kill <615> him <846>, a report <5334> was sent up <305> to the commanding officer <5506> of the cohort <4686> that <3754> all <3650> Jerusalem <2419> was in confusion <4797>.
He <3739> immediately <1824> took <3880> soldiers <4757> and <2532> centurions <1543> and ran down <2701> to <1909> the crowd <846>. When <1492> they saw <1492> the commanding officer <5506> and <2532> the soldiers <4757>, they stopped <3973> beating <5180> Paul <3972>.
Then <5119> the commanding officer <5506> came up <1448> and arrested <1949> him <846> and <2532> ordered <2753> him to be tied up <1210> with two <1417> chains <254>; he <4441> then <2532> asked <4441> who <5101> he was <1510> and <2532> what <5101> he had done <4160>.
But <1161> some <5100> in <1722> the crowd <3793> shouted <2019> one thing, and others <243> something else, and when the commanding officer <804> was unable <1410> unable <3361> to find out <1097> the truth because of <1223> the disturbance <2351>, he ordered <2753> Paul <846> to be brought <71> into <1519> the barracks <3925>.
When <3753> he came <1096> to <1909> the steps <304>, Paul <846> had to be <4819> carried <941> by <5259> the soldiers <4757> because <1223> of the violence <970> of the mob <3793>,
for <1063> a crowd <4128> of people <2992> followed <190> them, screaming <2896>, “Away <142> with him <846>!”
As <3195> Paul <3972> was about <3195> to be brought <1521> into <1519> the barracks <3925>, he said <3004> to the commanding officer <5506>, “May <1487> <1832> I <3427> say <2036> something <5100> to <4314> you <4571>?” The officer replied <5346>, “Do you know <1097> Greek <1676>?
Then <687> you’re <4771> <1510> not <3756> that Egyptian <124> who started a rebellion <387> and <2532> led <1806> the four thousand <5070> men <435> of the ‘Assassins <4607>’ into <1519> the wilderness <2048> some time ago <4253> <5130> <2250>?”
Paul <3972> answered <2036>, “I <1473> am <1510> a Jew <2453> from Tarsus <5018> in Cilicia <2791>, a citizen <4177> of an important <767> city <4172>. Please allow <2010> me <3427> to speak <2980> to <4314> the people <2992>.”
When the commanding officer had given <2010> him <846> permission <2010>, Paul <3972> stood <2476> on <1909> the steps <304> and gestured <2678> to the people <2992> with his hand <5495>. When they had become <1096> silent <4602>, he addressed <4377> them in Aramaic <1446> <1258>,
