The word <01697> of the Lord <03068> came <01961> to <0413> me:
“Son <01121> of man <0120>, offer <02330> a riddle <02420>, and tell <04911> a parable <04912> to <0413> the house <01004> of Israel <03478>.
Say <0559> to them: ‘This is what <03541> the sovereign <03069> Lord <0136> says <0559>: “‘A great <01419> eagle <05404> with broad <01419> wings <03671>, long <0750> feathers <083>, with full <04392> plumage <05133> which <0834> was multi-hued <07553>, came <0935> to <0413> Lebanon <03844> and took <03947> the top <06788> of the cedar <0730>.
He plucked <06998> off its topmost <07218> shoot <03242>; he brought <0935> it to <0413> a land <0776> of merchants <03667> and planted <07760> it in a city <05892> of traders <07402>.
He took <03947> one of the seedlings <02233> of the land <0776>, placed <05414> it in a cultivated <02233> plot <07704>; a shoot by abundant <07227> water <04325>, like a willow <06851> he planted <07760> it.
It sprouted <06779> and became <01961> a vine <01612>, spreading <05628> low <08217> to the ground <06967>; its branches <01808> turning <06437> toward <0413> him, its roots <08328> were under <08478> itself. So it became <01961> a vine <01612>; it produced <06213> shoots <0905> and sent out <07971> branches <06288>.
“‘There was <01961> another <0259> great <01419> eagle <05404> with broad <01419> wings <03671> and thick <07227> plumage <05133>. Now <02009> this <02063> vine <01612> twisted <03719> its roots <08328> toward him and sent <07971> its branches <01808> toward him to be watered <08248> from the soil <06170> where it was planted <04302>.
In <0413> a good <02896> field <07704>, by <0413> abundant <07227> waters <04325>, it was <01931> planted <08362> to grow <06213> branches <06057>, bear <05375> fruit <06529>, and become <01961> a beautiful <0155> vine <01612>.
“‘Say <0559> to them: This is what <03541> the sovereign <0136> Lord <03069> says <0559>: “‘Will it prosper <06743>? Will he not <03808> rip out <05423> its roots <08328> and cause its fruit <06529> to rot <07082> and wither <03001>? All <03605> its foliage <06780> <02964> will wither <03001>. No <03808> strong <01419> arm <02220> or large <07227> army <05971> will be needed to pull <05375> it out <05375> by its roots <08328>.
Consider <02009>! It is planted <08362>, but will it prosper <06743>? Will it not <03808> wither completely <03001> <03001> when the east <06921> wind <07307> blows <05060> on <05921> it? Will it not wither <03001> in the soil <06170> where it sprouted <06780>?’”
Then the word <01697> of the Lord <03068> came <01961> to <0413> me:
“Say <0559> to the rebellious <04805> house <01004> of Israel: ‘Don’t <03808> you know <03045> what <04100> these <0428> things mean?’ Say <0559>: ‘See here <02009>, the king <04428> of Babylon <0894> came <0935> to Jerusalem <03389> and took <03947> her king <04428> and her officials <08269> prisoner and brought <0935> them to <0413> himself in Babylon <0894>.
He took <03947> one from the royal <04410> family <02233>, made <03772> a treaty <01285> with <0854> him, and put <0935> him under oath <0423>. He then took <03947> the leaders <0352> of the land <0776>
so it would be <01961> a lowly <08217> kingdom <04467> which could not <01115> rise <05375> on its own but must keep <08104> its treaty <01285> with him in order to stand <05975>.
But this one from Israel’s royal family rebelled <04775> against the king of Babylon by sending <07971> his emissaries <04397> to Egypt <04714> to obtain <05414> horses <05483> and a large <07227> army <05971>. Will he prosper <06743>? Will the one doing <06213> these <0428> things escape <04422>? Can he break <06565> the covenant <01285> and escape <04422>?
“‘As surely as I <0589> live <02416>, declares <05002> the sovereign <0136> Lord <03068>, surely <0518> in the city <04725> of the <0853> king <04428> who crowned <04427> him, whose <0834> oath <0423> he despised <0959> and whose <0834> covenant <01285> he broke <06565>– in <0854> the middle <08432> of Babylon <0894> he will die <04191>!
Pharaoh <06547> with his great <01419> army <02428> and mighty <07227> horde <06951> will not <03808> help <06213> him in battle <04421>, when siege ramps <05550> are erected <08210> and siege-walls <01785> are built <01129> to kill <03772> many <07227> people <05315>.
He despised <0959> the oath <0423> by breaking <06565> the covenant <01285>. Take note <02009>– he gave <05414> his promise <03027> and did <06213> all <03605> these <0428> things– he will not <03808> escape <04422>!
“‘Therefore <03651> this is what <03541> the sovereign <0136> Lord <03069> says <0559>: As surely <02416> as I <0589> live, I will certainly repay him for despising <06331> my oath <0423> and breaking <0959> my covenant <01285>!
I will throw <06566> my net <07568> over <05921> him and he will be caught <08610> in my snare <04686>; I will bring <0935> him to Babylon <0894> and judge <08199> him there <08033> because <0834> of the unfaithfulness <04604> he committed <04603> against me.
All <03605> the choice men <04015> among his troops <0102> will die <05307> by the sword <02719> and the survivors <07604> will be scattered <06566> to every <03605> wind <07307>. Then you will know <03045> that <03588> I <0589>, the Lord <03068>, have spoken <01696>!
“‘This is what <03541> the sovereign <0136> Lord <03069> says <0559>: “‘I <0589> will take <03947> a sprig from the lofty <07311> top <06788> of the cedar <0730> and plant <05414> it. I will pluck <06998> from the top <07218> one of its tender <07390> twigs <03127>; I myself <0589> will plant <08362> it on <05921> a high <01364> and lofty <08524> mountain <02022>.
I will plant <08362> it on a high <04791> mountain <02022> of Israel <03478>, and it will raise <05375> branches <06057> and produce <06213> fruit <06529> and become <01961> a beautiful <0117> cedar <0730>. Every <03605> bird <06833> will live <07931> under <08478> it; Every <03605> winged creature <03671> will live <07931> in the shade <06738> of its branches <01808>.
All <03605> the trees <06086> of the field <07704> will know <03045> that <03588> I <0589> am the Lord <03068>. I make the high <01364> tree <06086> low <08217>; I raise up <01361> the low <08213> tree <06086>. I make <03001> the green <03892> tree <06086> wither <03001>, and I make <06524> the dry <03002> tree <06086> sprout <06524>. I <0589>, the Lord <03068>, have spoken <01696>, and I will do <06213> it!’”
