The Lord <03068> will certainly have compassion <07355> on Jacob <03290>; he will again <05750> choose <0977> Israel <03478> as his special people and restore <03240> them to <05921> their land <0127>. Resident foreigners <01616> will join <03867> them and unite <05596> with <05921> the family <01004> of Jacob <03290>.
Nations <05971> will take <03947> them and bring <0935> them back to <0413> their own place <04725>. Then the family <01004> of Jacob will make foreigners their servants <08198> <05650> as they settle <05157> in <05921> the Lord’s <03068> land <0127>. They will make <01961> their captors <07617> captives <07617> and rule <07287> over the ones who oppressed <05065> them.
When the Lord <03068> gives <05117> you relief <05117> from your suffering <06090> and anxiety <07267>, and from <04480> the hard <07186> labor <05656> which <0834> you were made to perform <05647>,
you will taunt <04912> <05375> the king <04428> of Babylon <0894> with these <02088> words: “Look how <0349> the oppressor <05065> has met his end <07673>! Hostility <04062> has ceased <07673>!
The Lord <03068> has broken <07665> the club <04294> of the wicked <07563>, the scepter <07626> of rulers <04910>.
It furiously <05678> struck down <05221> nations <05971> with unceasing <05627> <01115> blows <04347>. It angrily <0639> ruled <07287> over nations <01471>, oppressing <04783> them without <01097> restraint <02820>.
The whole <03605> earth <0776> rests <05117> and is quiet <08252>; they break into song <07440> <06476>.
The evergreens <01265> also <01571> rejoice <08055> over your demise, as do the cedars <0730> of Lebanon <03844>, singing, ‘Since <0227> you fell asleep <07901>, no <03808> woodsman comes up <05927> to <05921> chop <03772> us down <03772>!’
Sheol <07585> below <08478> is stirred up <07264> about you, ready to meet <07125> you when you arrive <0935>. It rouses <05782> the spirits of the dead <07496> for you, all <03605> the former leaders <06260> of the earth <0776>; it makes all <03605> the former kings <04428> of the nations <01471> rise <06965> from their thrones <03678>.
All <03605> of them respond <06030> to <0413> you, saying <0559>: ‘You <0859> too <01571> have become weak <02470> like <03644> us! You have become <04911> just like <04911> us!
Your splendor <01347> has been brought down <03381> to Sheol <07585>, as well as the sound <01998> of your stringed instruments <05035>. You lie on a bed <03331> of maggots <07415>, with a blanket <04374> of worms <08438> over <08478> you.
Look how <0349> you have fallen <05307> from the sky <08064>, O shining <01966> one, son <01121> of the dawn <07837>! You have been cut down <01438> to the ground <0776>, O conqueror <02522> of the nations <01471>!
You <0859> said <0559> to yourself <03824>, “I will climb up <05927> to the sky <08064>. Above <04605> the stars <03556> of El <0410> I will set up <07311> my throne <03678>. I will rule <03427> on the mountain <02022> of assembly <04150> on the remote slopes <03411> of Zaphon <06828>.
I will climb up <05927> to <05921> the tops <01116> of the clouds <05645>; I will make <01819> myself like <01819> the Most High <05945>!”
But <0389> you were brought down <03381> to <0413> Sheol <07585>, to <0413> the remote slopes <03411> of the pit <0953>.
Those who see <07200> you stare <07688> at <0413> you, they look <0995> at <0413> you carefully <0995>, thinking: “Is this <02088> the man <0376> who shook <07264> the earth <0776>, the one who made <07493> kingdoms <04467> tremble <07493>?
Is this the one who made <07760> the world <08398> like a desert <04057>, who ruined <02040> its cities <05892>, and refused <03808> to free <06605> his prisoners <0615> so they could return home <01004>?”’
As for all <03605> the kings <04428> of the nations <01471>, all <03605> of them lie down <07901> in splendor <03519>, each <0376> in his own tomb <01004>.
But you <0859> have been thrown out <07993> of your grave <06913> like a shoot <05342> that is thrown away <08581>. You lie among <03830> the slain <02026>, among those who have been slashed <02944> by the sword <02719>, among those headed for <03381> the stones <068> of the pit <0953>, as if you were a mangled <0947> corpse <06297>.
You will not <03808> be buried <06900> with <03161> them, because <03588> you destroyed <07843> your land <0776> and killed <02026> your people <05971>. The offspring <02233> of the wicked <07489> will never <05769> <03808> be mentioned <07121> again.
Prepare <03559> to execute <04293> his sons <01121> for the sins <05771> their ancestors <01> have committed. They must not <01077> rise up <06965> and take possession <03423> of the earth <0776>, or fill <04390> the surface <06440> of the world <08398> with cities <05892>.”
“I will rise <06965> up against <05921> them,” says <05002> the Lord <03069> who commands armies <06635>. “I will blot out <03772> all remembrance <08034> of Babylon <0894> and destroy all her people <07605>, including the offspring <05220> <05209> she produces,” says <05002> the Lord <03069>.
“I will turn <07760> her into <07760> a place that is overrun <04180> with wild animals <07090> and covered with pools <098> of stagnant water <04325>. I will get rid of <08045> her, just as one sweeps <02894> away dirt with a broom <04292>,” says <05002> the Lord <03068> who commands armies <06635>.
The Lord <03068> who commands armies <06635> makes <0559> this solemn <07650> vow: “Be sure of this: Just <0834> as I have intended <01819>, so <03651> it will be <01961>; just <0834> as I have planned <03289>, it will happen <06965>.
I will break <07665> Assyria <0804> in <05921> my land <0776>, I will trample <0947> them underfoot on <05921> my hills <02022>. Their yoke <05923> will be removed from <05493> my people, the burden <05448> will be lifted from <05493> their shoulders <07926>.
This <02063> is the plan <06098> I have devised <06095> for <05921> the whole <03605> earth <0776>; my hand <03027> is ready to strike <05186> all <03605> the nations <01471>.”
Indeed <03588>, the Lord <03068> who commands armies <06635> has a plan <03289>, and who <04310> can possibly frustrate <06565> it? His hand <03027> is ready to strike <05186>, and who <04310> can possibly stop <07725> it?
In the year <08141> King <04428> Ahaz <0271> died <04194>, this <02088> message <04853> was revealed <01961>:
Don’t <0408> be so happy <08055>, all <03605> you Philistines <06429>, just because <03588> the club <07626> that beat <05221> you has been broken <07665>! For <03588> a viper <05175> will grow out <03318> of the serpent’s <06848> root <08328>, and its fruit <06529> will be a darting <05774> adder <08314>.
The poor <01800> will graze <07462> in my pastures; the needy <034> will rest <07257> securely <0983>. But I will kill <04191> your root <08328> by famine <07458>; it will put to death <02026> all your survivors <07611>.
Wail <03213>, O city gate <08179>! Cry out <02199>, O city <05892>! Melt <04127> with fear, all <03605> you Philistines <06429>! For <03588> out of the north <06828> comes <0935> a cloud of smoke <06227>, and there are no <0369> stragglers <0909> in its ranks <04151>.
How <04100> will they respond <06030> to the messengers <04397> of this nation <01471>? Indeed <03588>, the Lord <03068> has made <03245> Zion <06726> secure; the oppressed <06041> among his people <05971> will find safety <02620> in her.
