Later <0310> the Moabites <04124> <01121> and Ammonites <05983> <01121>, along with <05973> some of the Meunites <05984>, attacked <04421> <05921> <0935> Jehoshaphat <03092>.
Messengers arrived <0935> and reported <05046> to Jehoshaphat <03092>, “A huge <07227> army <01995> is attacking <05921> <0935> you from the other side <05676> of the Dead Sea <03220>, from the direction of Edom <0758>. Look <02009>, they are in Hazezon Tamar <02688> (that <01931> is, En Gedi <05872>).”
Jehoshaphat <03092> was afraid <03372>, so he decided <05414> to seek <01875> the Lord’s <03068> advice. He decreed <07121> that all <03605> Judah <03063> should observe a fast <06685>.
The people of Judah <03063> assembled <06908> to ask <01245> for the Lord’s <03068> help; they came <0935> from all <03605> the cities <05892> of Judah <03063> to ask <01245> for the Lord’s <03068> help.
Jehoshaphat <03092> stood <05975> before the assembly <06951> of Judah <03063> and Jerusalem <03389> at the Lord’s <03068> temple <01004>, in front <06440> of the new <02319> courtyard <02691>.
He prayed <0559>: “O Lord <03068> God <0430> of our ancestors <01>, you <0859> are the God <0430> who <01931> lives in heaven <08064> and rules <04910> over all <03605> the kingdoms <04467> of the nations <01471>. You possess <03027> strength <03581> and power <01369>; no <0369> one can stand <03320> against <05973> you.
Our God <0430>, you <0859> drove out <03423> the inhabitants <03427> of this <02063> land <0776> before <06440> your people <05971> Israel <03478> and gave <05414> it as a permanent <05769> possession to the descendants <02233> of your friend <0157> Abraham <085>.
They settled down <03427> in it and built <01129> in it a temple <04720> to honor <08034> you, saying <0559>,
‘If <0518> disaster <07451> comes <0935> on <05921> us in the form of military attack <02719>, judgment <08196>, plague <01698>, or famine <07458>, we will stand <05975> in front <06440> of this <02088> temple <01004> before <06440> you, for <03588> you are present <08034> in this <02088> temple <01004>. We will cry out <02199> to <0413> you for help in our distress <06869>, so that you will hear <08085> and deliver <03467> us.’
Now <06258> the Ammonites <05983> <01121>, Moabites <04124>, and men from Mount <02022> Seir <08165> are coming! When <0834> Israel <03478> came <0935> from the land <0776> of Egypt <04714>, you did not <03808> allow <05414> them to invade <0935> these lands. They bypassed <05493> them and did not <03808> destroy <08045> them.
Look <02009> how they <01992> are repaying <01580> us! They come <0935> to drive <01644> us out <01644> of our allotted land <03425> which <0834> you assigned <03423> to us!
Our God <0430>, will you not <03808> judge <08199> them? For <03588> we are powerless <03581> <0369> against <06440> this <02088> huge <07227> army <01995> that attacks <0935> us! We <0587> don’t <03808> know <03045> what <04100> we should do <06213>; we look <05869> to <05921> you for <03588> help.”
All <03605> the men of Judah <03063> were standing <05975> before <06440> the Lord <03068>, along with <01571> their infants <02945>, wives <0802>, and children <01121>.
Then in <05921> the midst <08432> of the assembly <06951>, the Lord’s <03068> Spirit <07307> came <01961> upon Jachaziel <03166> son <01121> of Zechariah <02148>, son <01121> of Benaiah <01141>, son <01121> of Jeiel <03273>, son <01121> of Mattaniah <04983>, a Levite <03881> and descendant <01121> of Asaph <0623>.
He said <0559>: “Pay attention <07181>, all <03605> you people of Judah <03063>, residents <03427> of Jerusalem <03389>, and King <04428> Jehoshaphat <03092>! This is what <03541> the Lord <03068> says <0559> to you <0859>: ‘Don’t <0408> be afraid <03372> and don’t <0408> panic <02865> because <06440> of this <02088> huge <07227> <01995> army! For <03588> the battle <04421> is not <03808> yours, but <03588> God’s <0430>.
Tomorrow <04279> march down <03381> against <05921> them as <02005> they come up <05927> the Ascent <04608> of Ziz <06732>. You will find <04672> them at the end <05490> of the ravine <05158> in front of <06440> the Desert <04057> of Jeruel <03385>.
You will not <03808> fight <03898> in this <02063> battle. Take <03320> your positions <03320>, stand <05975>, and watch <07200> the Lord <03068> deliver <03444> you, O Judah <03063> and Jerusalem <03389>. Don’t <0408> be afraid <03372> and don’t <0408> panic <02865>! Tomorrow <04279> march out <03318> toward <06440> them; the Lord <03068> is with <05973> you!’”
Jehoshaphat <03092> bowed down <06915> with his face <0639> toward the ground <0776>, and all <03605> the people of Judah <03063> and the residents <03427> of Jerusalem <03389> fell down <05307> before <06440> the Lord <03068> and worshiped <07812> him <03068>.
Then some <04480> Levites <03881>, from <04480> the Kohathites <06956> <01121> and Korahites <07145> <01121>, got up <06965> and loudly <01419> <06963> praised <01984> the Lord <03068> God <0430> of Israel <03478>.
Early <07925> the next morning <01242> they marched <03318> out to the Desert <04057> of Tekoa <08620>. When they were ready to march <03318>, Jehoshaphat <03092> stood up <05975> and said <0559>: “Listen <08085> to me, you people of Judah <03063> and residents <03427> of Jerusalem <03389>! Trust <0539> in the Lord <03068> your God <0430> and you will be safe <0539>! Trust <0539> in the message of his prophets <05030> and you will win <06743>.”
He met <03289> with <0413> the people <05971> and appointed <05975> musicians <07891> to play before the Lord <03068> and praise <01984> his majestic <06944> splendor <01927>. As they marched <03318> ahead <06440> of the warriors <02502> they said <0559>: “Give thanks <03034> to the Lord <03068>, for <03588> his loyal love <02617> endures <05769>.”
When <06256> they began <02490> to shout <07440> and praise <08416>, the Lord <03068> suddenly attacked <05921> <0693> <05414> the Ammonites <05983> <01121>, Moabites <04124>, and men from Mount <02022> Seir <08165> who were invading <0935> Judah <03063>, and they were defeated <05062>.
The Ammonites <05983> <01121> and Moabites <04124> attacked <05975> the men <03427> from Mount <02022> Seir <08165> and annihilated <08045> <02763> them. When they had finished off <03615> the men <03427> of Seir <08165>, they attacked <05826> and destroyed <04889> one <0376> another <07453>.
When the men of Judah <03063> arrived <0935> at <05921> the observation post <04707> overlooking <02005> the desert <04057> and looked <06437> at <0413> the huge <01995> army, they saw dead bodies <06297> on the ground <0776>; there were no <0369> survivors <06413>!
Jehoshaphat <03092> and his men <05971> went <0935> to gather <0962> the <0853> plunder <07998>; they found <04672> a huge amount <07230> of supplies <07399>, clothing <06297> and valuable <02530> items <03627>. They carried away <04853> <05337> everything they could. There was <01961> so much <07227> plunder <07998>, it took them <0853> three <07969> days <03117> to haul <0962> it off <0962>.
On the fourth <07243> day <03117> they assembled <06950> in the Valley <06010> of Berachah <01294>, where <08033> they praised <01288> the Lord <03068>. So that <03651> place <04725> is called <08034> <07121> the Valley <06010> of Berachah <01294> to <05704> this very day <03117>.
Then all <03605> the men <0376> of Judah <03063> and Jerusalem <03389> returned <07725> joyfully <08057> to <0413> Jerusalem <03389> with Jehoshaphat <03092> leading <07218> them; the Lord <03069> had given them reason to rejoice <08055> over their enemies <0341>.
They entered <0935> Jerusalem <03389> to the sound of stringed instruments <03658> <05035> and trumpets <02689> and proceeded to <0413> the temple <01004> of the Lord <03068>.
All <03605> the kingdoms <04467> of the surrounding lands <0776> were <01961> afraid <06343> of <05921> God <0430> when they heard <08085> how <03588> the Lord <03068> had fought <03898> against <05973> Israel’s <03478> enemies <0341>.
Jehoshaphat’s <03092> kingdom <04438> enjoyed peace <08252>; his God <0430> made <05117> him secure <05117> on every side <05439>.
Jehoshaphat <03092> reigned <04427> over <05921> Judah <03063>. He was thirty-five <02568> <07970> years <08141> old <01121> when he became king <04427> and he reigned <04427> for twenty-five <02568> <06242> years <08141> in Jerusalem <03389>. His mother <0517> was Azubah <05806>, the daughter <01323> of Shilhi <07977>.
He followed <01980> in his father <01> Asa’s <0609> footsteps <01870> and was careful <05493> <03808> to do <06213> what the Lord <03068> approved <05869> <03477>.
However <0389>, the high places <01116> were not <03808> eliminated <05493>; the people <05971> were still <05750> not <03808> devoted <03824> <03559> to the God <0430> of their ancestors <01>.
The rest <03499> of the events <01697> of Jehoshaphat’s <03092> reign, from start <07223> to finish <0314>, are recorded <03789> in the Annals <01697> of Jehu <03058> son <01121> of Hanani <02607> which <0834> are included <05927> in <05921> Scroll <05612> of the Kings <04428> of Israel <03478>.
Later <0310> King <04428> Jehoshaphat <03092> of Judah <03063> made an alliance <02266> with <05973> King <04428> Ahaziah <0274> of Israel <03478>, who <01931> did evil <06213> <07561>.
They agreed <02266> to make <06213> large seagoing merchant ships <08659>; ships <0591>; they built <06213> the ships <0591> in Ezion Geber <06100>.
Eliezer <0461> son <01121> of Dodavahu <01735> from Mareshah <04762> prophesied <05012> against <05921> Jehoshaphat <03092>, “Because you made an alliance <02266> with <05973> Ahaziah <0274>, the Lord <03068> will shatter <06555> what <04639> you have made.” The ships <0591> were wrecked <07665> and unable <06113> <03808> to go <01980> to <0413> sea <08659>.
