2When <0518> they had completely consumed <0398> <03615> the earth’s <0776> vegetation <06212>, I said <0559>, “Sovereign <03068> Lord <0136>, forgive <05545> Israel! How <04310> can Jacob <03290> survive <06965>? He <01931> is too weak <06996>!”
3The Lord <03068> decided <05162> not to do this <02063>. “It will not <03808> happen <01961>,” the Lord <03068> said <0559>.
4The sovereign <03069> Lord <0136> showed <07200> me this: I saw <02009> the sovereign <03069> Lord <0136> summoning <07121> a shower <07378> of fire <0784>. It consumed <0398> the great <07227> deep <08415> and devoured <0398> the fields <02506>.
5I said <0559>, “Sovereign <03069> Lord <0136>, stop <02308>! How <04310> can Jacob <03290> survive <06965>? He <01931> is too weak <06996>!”
6The Lord <03068> decided <05162> not to do this <02063>. The sovereign <0136> Lord <03069> said <0559>, “This <01931> will not <03808> happen <01961> either.”
7He showed <07200> me this: I saw <02009> the sovereign <0136> One standing <05324> by <05921> a tin <0594> wall <02346> holding tin <0594> in his hand <03027>.
8The Lord <03068> said <0559> to <0413> me, “What <04100> do you <0859> see <07200>, Amos <05986>?” I said <0559>, “Tin <0594>.” The sovereign One <0136> then said <0559>, “Look <02005>, I am about to place <07760> tin <0594> among <07130> my people <05971> Israel <03478>. I will no <03808> longer <05750> <03254> overlook <05674> their sin.
9Isaac’s <03446> centers of worship <01116> will become desolate <08074>; Israel’s <03478> holy places <04720> will be in <05921> ruins <02717>. I will attack <06965> Jeroboam’s <03379> dynasty <01004> with the sword <02719>.”
10Amaziah <0558> the priest <03548> of Bethel <01008> sent <07971> this message to <0413> King <04428> Jeroboam <03379> of Israel <03478>: “Amos <05986> is conspiring against <07194> you in <05921> the very heart <07130> of the kingdom <01004> of Israel <03478>! The land <0776> cannot <03201> <03808> endure <03557> all <03605> his prophecies <01697>.
11As a matter <03541> of fact <03588>, Amos <05986> is saying <0559> this: ‘Jeroboam <03379> will die <04191> by the sword <02719> and Israel <03478> will certainly be carried <01540> into exile away <01540> from <05921> its land <0127>.’”
12Amaziah <0558> then said <0559> to <0413> Amos <05986>, “Leave <01980>, you visionary <02374>! Run away <01272> to <0413> the land <0776> of Judah <03063>! Earn <0398> your living <03899> and prophesy <05012> there <08033>!
13Don’t <03808> prophesy <05012> at Bethel <01008> any longer <05750> <03254>, for <03588> a royal <04428> temple <04720> and palace <04467> <01004> are here!”
14Amos <05986> replied <0559> to Amaziah <0558>, “I <0595> was not <03808> a prophet <05030> by profession <05030>. No <03808>, I <0595> was a herdsman <0951> who also took care <01103> of sycamore fig trees <08256>.
15Then the Lord <03068> took <03947> me from tending <0310> flocks <06629> and gave <0559> me this commission, ‘Go <01980>! Prophesy <05012> to <0413> my people <05971> Israel <03478>!’
16So now <06258> listen <08085> to the Lord’s <03068> message <01697>! You <0859> say <0559>, ‘Don’t <03808> prophesy <05012> against <05921> Israel <03478>! Don’t <03808> preach <05197> against <05921> the family <01004> of Isaac <03446>!’
17“Therefore <03651> this is what <03541> the Lord <03068> says <0559>: ‘Your wife <0802> will become a prostitute <02181> in the streets <05892> and your sons <01121> and daughters <01323> will die <05307> violently <02719>. Your land <0127> will be given <02505> to others and you <0859> will die <04191> in <05921> a foreign <02931> land <0127>. Israel <03478> will certainly be carried into exile away <01540> <01540> from <05921> its land <0127>.’”
