Now <1161> in <1722> those <3778> days <2250>, when the disciples <3101> were growing in number <4129>, a complaint <1112> arose <1096> on the part of the Greek-speaking Jews <1675> against <4314> the native Hebraic Jews <1445>, because <3754> their <846> widows <5503> were being overlooked <3865> in <1722> the daily <2522> distribution of food <1248>.
So <1161> the twelve <1427> called <4341> the whole group <4128> of the disciples <3101> together and said <3004>, “It is <1510> not <3756> right <701> for us <2248> to neglect <2641> the word <3056> of God <2316> to wait <1247> on tables <5132>.
But <1161> carefully select <1980> from <1537> among you <5216>, brothers <80>, seven <2033> men <435> who are well-attested <3140>, full <4134> of <4151> the Spirit <4151> and <2532> of wisdom <4678>, whom <3739> we may put in charge <2525> of <1909> this <3778> necessary task <5532>.
But <1161> we will devote <4342> ourselves <2249> to prayer <4335> and <2532> to the ministry <1248> of the word <3056>.”
The proposal <3056> pleased <700> the entire <3956> group <4128>, so <2532> they chose <1586> Stephen <4736>, a man <435> full <4134> of faith <4102> and <2532> of <4151> the Holy <40> Spirit <4151>, with <2532> Philip <5376>, Prochorus <4402>, Nicanor <3527>, Timon <5096>, Parmenas <3937>, and <2532> Nicolas <3532>, a Gentile convert to Judaism <4339> from Antioch <491>.
They stood <2476> these men before <1799> the apostles <652>, who prayed <4336> and placed <2007> their <846> hands <5495> on them.
The word <3056> of God <2316> continued <837> to spread <4129>, the number <706> of disciples <3101> in <1722> Jerusalem <2419> increased greatly <4970>, and <5037> a large <4183> group <3793> of priests <2409> became obedient <5219> to the faith <4102>.
Now Stephen <4736>, full <4134> of grace <5485> and <2532> power <1411>, was performing <4160> great <3173> wonders <5059> and <2532> miraculous signs <4592> among <1722> the people <2992>.
But <1161> some men <5100> from <1537> the Synagogue <4864> of the Freedmen <3032> (as it was called <3004>), both <2532> Cyrenians <2956> and <2532> Alexandrians <221>, as well as <2532> some from <575> Cilicia <2791> and <2532> the province of Asia <773>, stood up <450> and argued <4802> with Stephen <4736>.
Yet <2532> they were <2480> not <3756> able <2480> to resist <436> the wisdom <4678> and <2532> the Spirit <4151> with which <3739> he spoke <2980>.
Then <5119> they secretly instigated <5260> some men <435> to say <3004>, “We have heard <191> this man <846> speaking <2980> blasphemous <989> words <4487> against <1519> Moses <3475> and <2532> God <2316>.”
They incited <4787> the people <2992>, the elders <4245>, and <2532> the experts in the law <1122>; then <2532> they approached <2186> Stephen, seized <4884> him <846>, and <2532> brought <71> him before <1519> the council <4892>.
They brought forward <2476> false <5571> witnesses <3144> who said <3004>, “This <3778> man <444> does <3973> not <3756> stop <3973> saying <2980> things <4487> against <2596> this <5127> holy <40> place <5117> and <2532> the law <3551>.
For <1063> we have heard <191> him <846> saying <3004> that <3754> Jesus <2424> the Nazarene <3480> will destroy <2647> this <5126> place <5117> and <2532> change <236> the customs <1485> that <3739> Moses <3475> handed down <3860> to us <2254>.”
All <3956> who were <816> sitting <2516> in <1722> the council <4892> looked intently <816> at <1519> Stephen <846> and saw <1492> his <846> face <4383> was like <5616> the face <4383> of an angel <32>.
