I wrote <4160> the former <4413> account <3056>, Theophilus <2321>, about <4012> all <3956> that <3739> Jesus <2424> began <756> to do <4160> and <2532> teach <1321>
until <891> the day <2250> he was taken up <353> to heaven, after <1781> he had given orders <1781> by <1223> the Holy <40> Spirit <4151> to the apostles <652> he had chosen <1586>.
To the same apostles also <2532>, after <3326> his <846> suffering <3958>, he presented <3936> himself <1438> alive <2198> with <1722> many <4183> convincing proofs <5039>. He was seen <3700> by <1223> them <846> over a forty-day <2250> <5062> period and <2532> spoke <3004> about matters concerning <4012> the kingdom <932> of God <2316>.
While <4871> he was <4871> with them <846>, he declared <3853>, “Do <5563> not <3361> leave <5563> Jerusalem <2414>, but <235> wait <4037> there for what my Father <3962> promised <1860>, which <3739> you heard <191> about from me <3450>.
For <3754> John <2491> baptized <907> with water <5204>, but <1161> you will be baptized <907> with <1722> the Holy <40> Spirit <4151> not <3756> many <4183> days <2250> from <3326> now.”
So <3767> when they had gathered together <4905>, they began to ask <2065> him <846>, “Lord <2962>, is this <5129> the time <5550> when you are restoring <600> the kingdom <932> to Israel <2474>?”
He told <2036> them <846>, “You <5216> are <1510> not <3756> permitted to know <1097> the times <5550> or <2228> periods <2540> that <3739> the Father <3962> has set by <5087> his own <2398> authority <1849>.
But <235> you will receive <2983> power <1411> when <1904> the Holy <40> Spirit <4151> has come <1904> upon <1909> you <5209>, and <2532> you will be <1510> my <3450> witnesses <3144> in <1722> Jerusalem <2419>, and <2532> in <1722> all <3956> Judea <2449> and <2532> Samaria <4540>, and <2532> to <2193> the farthest parts <2078> of the earth <1093>.”
After <2036> he had said <2036> this <5023>, while <991> they <846> were watching <991>, he was lifted up <1869> and <2532> a cloud <3507> hid <5274> him <846> from <575> their <846> sight <3788>.
As <5613> they were <1510> still staring <816> into <1519> the sky <3772> while <4198> he <846> was going <4198>, suddenly <2400> two <1417> men <435> in <1722> white <3022> clothing <2067> stood near <3936> them <846>
and <2532> said <3004>, “Men <435> of Galilee <1057>, why <5101> do you stand <2476> here looking up <991> into <1519> the sky <3772>? This <3778> same Jesus <2424> who has been taken up <353> from <575> you <5216> into <1519> heaven <3772> will come back <2064> in the same way <5158> you saw <2300> him <846> go <4198> into <1519> heaven <3772>.”
Then <5119> they returned <5290> to <1519> Jerusalem <2419> from <575> the mountain <3735> called <2564> the Mount of Olives <1638> (which <3739> is <1510> near <1451> Jerusalem <2419>, a Sabbath day’s <4521> journey away <3598>).
When <3753> they had entered <1525> Jerusalem, they went <305> to the upstairs room <5253> where <3757> they were <1510> staying <2650>. Peter <4074> and <2532> John <2491>, and <2532> James <2385>, and <2532> Andrew <406>, Philip <5376> and <2532> Thomas <2381>, Bartholomew <918> and <2532> Matthew <3156>, James <2385> son of Alphaeus <256> and <2532> Simon <4613> the Zealot <2207>, and <2532> Judas <2455> son of James <2385> were there.
All <3956> these <3778> continued together <4342> in prayer <4335> with one mind, together <3661> with <4862> the women <1135>, along <2532> with Mary <3137> the mother <3384> of Jesus <2424>, and <2532> his <846> brothers <80>.
In <1722> those <3778> days <2250> Peter <4074> stood up <450> among <1722> <3319> the believers <80> (a gathering <3793> <3686> of <1909> about <5613> one hundred <1540> and twenty <1501> people) and said,
“Brothers <435> <80>, the scripture <1124> had to be <1163> fulfilled <4137> that the Holy <40> Spirit <4151> foretold <4277> through <1223> David <1138> concerning <4012> Judas <2455>– who became <1096> the guide <3595> for those who arrested <4815> Jesus <2424>–
for <3754> he was <1510> counted <2674> as one of us <2254> and <2532> received <2975> a share <2819> in this <3778> ministry <1248>.”
(Now this man <3778> Judas acquired <2932> a field <5564> with <1537> the reward <3408> of his unjust deed <93>, and <2532> falling <1096> headfirst <4248> he burst open <2997> in the middle <3319> and <2532> all <3956> his <846> intestines <4698> gushed out <1632>.
This became <1096> known <1110> to all <3956> who lived <2730> in Jerusalem <2419>, so that <5620> in their own <846> language <1258> they called <2564> that <1565> field <5564> Hakeldama <184>, that <5124> is <1510>, “Field <5564> of Blood <129>.”)
“For <1063> it is written <1125> in <1722> the book <976> of Psalms <5568>, ‘Let <1096> his <846> house <1886> become <1096> deserted <2048>, and <2532> let there be <1510> no <3361> one to live <2730> in <1722> it <846>,’ and <2532> ‘Let another <2087> take <2983> his <846> position of responsibility <1984>.’
Thus <3767> one of the men <435> who have accompanied <4905> us <2254> during <1722> all <3956> the time <5550> the Lord <2962> Jesus <2424> associated <1525> <2532> <1831> with <1909> us <2248>,
beginning <756> from <575> his baptism <908> by John <2491> until <2193> the day <2250> he was taken up <353> from <575> us <2257>– one <1520> of these <5130> must become <1096> a witness <3144> of <386> his <846> resurrection <386> together with <4862> us <2254>.”
So <2532> they proposed <2476> two <1417> candidates: Joseph <2501> called <2564> Barsabbas <923> (also called <1941> Justus <2459>) and <2532> Matthias <3159>.
Then <2532> they prayed <4336>, “Lord <2962>, you <4771> know the hearts <2589> of all <3956>. Show <322> us which <3739> one <1520> of <1537> these <5130> two <1417> you have chosen <1586>
to assume <2983> the task <5117> of this <3778> service <1248> and <2532> apostleship <651> from <575> which <3739> Judas <2455> turned aside <3845> to go <4198> to <1519> his own <2398> place <5117>.”
Then <2532> they cast <1325> lots <2819> for them <846>, and <2532> the one chosen <4098> <2819> was Matthias <3159>; so <2532> he was counted <4785> with <3326> the eleven <1733> apostles <652>.
