Now <2532> Jesus left <1831> that place <1564> and <2532> came <2064> to <1519> his <846> hometown <3968>, and <2532> his <846> disciples <3101> followed <190> him <846>.
When <2532> the Sabbath <4521> came <1096>, he began <756> to teach <1321> in <1722> the synagogue <4864>. Many <4183> who heard <191> him were astonished <1605>, saying <3004>, “Where <4159> did he get these <5023> ideas? And <2532> what <5101> is this wisdom <4678> that has been given <1325> to him? What are these miracles <1411> that are done <1096> through <1223> his <846> hands <5495>?
Isn’t <3756> <1510> this <3778> the carpenter <5045>, the son <5207> of Mary <3137> and <2532> brother <80> of James <2385>, Joses <2500>, Judas <2455>, and <2532> Simon <4613>? And <2532> aren’t <3756> <1510> his <846> sisters <79> here <5602> with <4314> us <2248>?” And <2532> so they took offense <4624> at <1722> him <846>.
Then <2532> Jesus <2424> said <3004> to them <846>, “A prophet <4396> is <1510> not <3756> without honor <820> except <1487> <3361> in <1722> his <846> hometown <3968>, and <2532> among <1722> his <846> relatives <4773>, and <2532> in <1722> his own <846> house <3614>.”
He <2532> was <1410> not <3756> able <1410> to do <4160> a miracle <1411> there <1563>, except <1487> <3361> to lay <2007> his hands <5495> on a few <3641> sick people <732> and heal <2323> them.
And <2532> he was amazed <2296> because of <1223> their <846> unbelief <570>. Then <2532> he went around <4013> among <2945> the villages <2968> and taught <1321>.
Jesus called <4341> the twelve <1427> and <2532> began <756> to send <649> them <846> out <649> two <1417> by two <1417>. He <2532> gave <1325> them <846> authority <1849> over the unclean <169> spirits <4151>.
He <2532> instructed <3853> them <846> to <2443> take <142> nothing <3367> for <1519> the journey <3598> except <1487> a staff <4464>– no <3361> bread <740>, no <3361> bag <4082>, no <3361> money <5475> in <1519> their belts <2223>–
and to put on <5265> sandals <4547> but <235> not <3361> to wear <1746> two <1417> tunics <5509>.
He said <3004> to them <846>, “Wherever <3699> <1437> you enter <1525> <1519> a house <3614>, stay <3306> there <1563> until <2193> you leave <1831> the area <1564>.
If <302> a place <5117> will <1209> not <3361> welcome <1209> you <5209> or <3366> listen <191> to you <5216>, as <1607> you go out <1607> from there <1564>, shake <1621> the dust <5522> off <1621> your <5216> feet <4228> as <1519> a testimony <3142> against them <846>.”
So <2532> they went out <1831> and preached <2784> that <2443> all should repent <3340>.
They cast out <1544> many <4183> demons <1140> and <2532> anointed <218> many <4183> sick people <732> with oil <1637> and <2532> healed <2323> them.
Now <2532> King <935> Herod <2264> heard <191> this, for Jesus’ name <3686> had become <1096> known <5318>. Some were saying <3004>, “John <2491> the baptizer <907> has been raised <1453> from <1537> the dead <3498>, and <2532> because of <1223> this <5124>, miraculous powers <1411> are at work <1754> in <1722> him <846>.”
Others <243> said <3004>, “He is <1510> Elijah <2243>.” Others <243> said <3004>, “He is a prophet <4396>, like <5613> one <1520> of the prophets <4396> from the past.”
But <1161> when <191> Herod <2264> heard <191> this, he said <3004>, “John <2491>, whom <3739> I <1473> beheaded <607>, has been raised <1453>!”
For <1063> Herod <2264> himself <846> had sent <649> men, arrested <2902> John <2491>, and <2532> bound <1210> him <846> in <1722> prison <5438> on account of <1223> Herodias <2266>, his <846> brother <80> Philip’s <5376> wife <1135>, because <3754> Herod had married <1060> her <846>.
For <1063> John <2491> had repeatedly told <3004> Herod <2264>, “It is <1832> not <3756> lawful <1832> for you <4671> to have <2192> your <4675> brother’s <80> wife <1135>.”
So <1161> Herodias <2266> nursed a grudge <1758> against him <846> and <2532> wanted <2309> to kill <615> him <846>. But <2532> she could <1410> not <3756>
because <1063> Herod <2264> stood in awe <5399> of John <2491> and protected <4933> him <846>, since he knew <1492> that John <846> was a righteous <1342> and <2532> holy <40> man. When Herod heard <191> him <846>, he was <639> thoroughly <4183> baffled <639>, and yet he liked <2234> to listen <191> to John <846>.
But <2532> a suitable <2121> day <2250> came <1096>, when <3753> Herod <2264> gave <4160> a banquet <1173> on his <846> birthday <1077> for his <846> court officials <3175>, military commanders <5506>, and <2532> leaders <4413> of Galilee <1056>.
When <1525> his <846> daughter <2364> Herodias <2266> came in <1525> and <2532> danced <3738>, she pleased <700> Herod <2264> and <2532> his dinner guests <4873>. The king <935> said <2036> to the girl <2877>, “Ask <154> me <3165> for <154> whatever <1437> you want <2309> and <2532> I will give <1325> it to you <4671>.”
He <2532> swore <3660> to her <846>, “Whatever <1437> you ask <154> I will give <1325> you <4671>, up <1325> to <2193> half <2255> my <3450> kingdom <932>.”
So <2532> she went out <1831> and said <2036> to <3384> her <846> mother <3384>, “What <5101> should I ask for <154>?” Her mother said <2036>, “The head <2776> of John <2491> the baptizer <907>.”
Immediately <2117> she <1525> hurried <3326> <4710> back <1525> to <4314> the king <935> and made <154> her request <154>: “I want <2309> the head <2776> of John <2491> the Baptist <910> on <1909> a platter <4094> immediately <1824>.”
Although it grieved <1096> the king <935> deeply <4036>, he did <2309> not <3756> want <2309> to reject <114> her <846> request because of <1223> his oath <3727> and <2532> his guests <345>.
So <2532> the king <935> sent <649> an executioner <4688> at once <2117> to bring <5342> John’s <846> head <2776>, and he went and beheaded John in prison.
He brought <5342> his <846> head <2776> on <1909> a platter <4094> and <2532> gave <1325> it <846> to the girl <2877>, and <2532> the girl <2877> gave <1325> it <846> to her <846> mother <3384>.
When <2532> John’s <846> disciples <3101> heard <191> this, they came <2064> and <2532> took <142> his <846> body <4430> and <2532> placed <5087> it <846> in <1722> a tomb <3419>.
Then <2532> the apostles <652> gathered <4863> around <4314> Jesus <2424> and <2532> told <518> him <846> everything <3956> <3745> they had done <4160> and <2532> taught <1321>.
He <2532> said <3004> to them <846>, “Come <1205> with me privately <2596> <2398> to <1519> an isolated <2048> place <5117> and <2532> rest <373> a while <3641>” (for <1063> many <4183> were coming <2064> and <2532> going <5217>, and <2532> there was no <3761> time <2119> to eat <5315>).
So <2532> they went away <565> by themselves in <1722> a boat <4143> to <1519> some remote <2048> place <5117>.
But <2532> many <4183> saw <1492> them <846> leaving <5217> and <2532> recognized <1097> them, and <2532> they hurried on foot <3979> from <575> all <3956> the towns <4172> and arrived <4936> there <1563> ahead <4281> of them <846>.
As Jesus came ashore <1831> he saw <1492> the large <4183> crowd <3793> and <2532> he had compassion <4697> on <1909> them <846>, because <3754> they were <1510> like <5613> sheep <4263> without <3361> <2192> a shepherd <4166>. So <2532> he taught <756> <1321> them <846> many things <4183>.
When <2532> it was <1096> already <2235> late <5610> <4183>, his <846> disciples <3101> came <4334> to him <846> and said <3004>, “This is <1510> an isolated <2048> place <5117> and <2532> it is already <2235> very <4183> late <5610>.
Send <630> them <846> away <630> so <2443> that they can go <565> into <1519> the surrounding <2945> countryside <68> and <2532> villages <2968> and buy <59> something <5101> for themselves <1438> to eat <5315>.”
But <1161> he answered <2036> answered <611> them <846>, “You give <1325> them <846> something to eat <5315>.” And <2532> they said <3004>, “Should <565> we go <565> and buy <59> bread <740> for two hundred <1250> silver coins <1220> and <2532> give <1325> it to them <846> to eat <5315>?”
He said <3004> to them <846>, “How many <4214> loaves <740> do you have <2192>? Go <5217> and see <1492>.” When <2532> they found out <1097>, they said <3004>, “Five <4002>– and <2532> two <1417> fish <2486>.”
Then <2532> he directed <2004> them <846> all <3956> to sit down <347> in groups <4849> <4849> on <1909> the green <5515> grass <5528>.
So <2532> they reclined <377> in groups <4237> of <2596> hundreds <1540> and <2532> fifties <4004>.
He <2532> took <2983> the five <4002> loaves <740> and <2532> the two <1417> fish <2486>, and looking up <308> to <1519> heaven <3772>, he gave thanks <2127> and <2532> broke <2622> the loaves <740>. He gave <1325> them to his disciples <3101> to <2443> serve <3908> the people <846>, and <2532> he divided <3307> the two <1417> fish <2486> among them all <3956>.
They <5315> all <3956> ate <5315> and <2532> were satisfied <5526>,
and <2532> they picked up <142> the broken pieces <2801> and <2532> fish <2486> that were left over, twelve <1427> baskets <2894> full <4138>.
Now there were <1510> five thousand <4000> men <435> who ate <5315> the bread <740>.
Immediately <2117> Jesus made <315> his <846> disciples <3101> get <1684> into <1519> the boat <4143> and <2532> go on ahead <4254> to <1519> the other side <4008>, to <4314> Bethsaida <966>, while <2193> he <846> dispersed <630> the crowd <3793>.
After saying good-bye <657> to them <846>, he went <565> to <1519> the mountain <3735> to pray <4336>.
When evening <3798> came <1096>, the boat <4143> was <1510> in <1722> the middle <3319> of the sea <2281> and <2532> he <846> was alone <3441> on <1909> the land <1093>.
He <2532> saw <3708> them <846> straining <928> at <1722> the oars <1643>, because <1063> the wind <417> was <1510> against <1727> them <846>. As the night <3571> was ending <5067> <5438>, he came <2064> to <4314> them <846> walking <4043> on <1909> the sea <2281>, for he wanted <2309> to pass by <3928> them <846>.
When <1161> they saw <1492> him <846> walking <4043> on <1909> the water <2281> they thought <1380> he was <1510> a ghost <5326>. They cried out <349>,
for <1063> they <1492> all <3956> saw <1492> him <846> and <2532> were terrified <5015>. But <1161> immediately <2117> he spoke <2980> to <3326> them <846>: “Have courage <2293>! It is <1510> I <1473>. Do <5399> not <3361> be afraid <5399>.”
Then <2532> he went up <305> with <4314> them <846> into <1519> the boat <4143>, and <2532> the wind <417> ceased <2869>. They were <1839> completely <3029> astonished <1839>,
because <1063> they did <4920> not <3756> understand <4920> about <1909> the loaves <740>, but <235> their <846> hearts <2588> were <1510> hardened <4456>.
After <1276> they had crossed over <1276>, they came <2064> to <1909> land <1093> at <1519> Gennesaret <1082> and <2532> anchored <4358> there.
As <1831> they <846> got out <1831> of <1537> the boat <4143>, people immediately <2117> recognized <1921> Jesus <846>.
They ran <4063> through that <1565> whole <3650> region <5561> and <2532> began <756> to bring <4064> the sick <2560> <2192> on <1909> mats <2895> to wherever <3699> he was rumored <191> to be <1510>.
And <2532> wherever <3699> he would go <1531>– into <1519> villages <2968>, towns <4172>, or <2228> countryside <68>– they would place <5087> the sick <770> in <1722> the marketplaces <58>, and <2532> would ask <3870> him <846> if <2443> they could just touch <680> the edge <2899> of his <846> cloak <2440>, and <2532> all <3745> who <302> touched <681> it <846> were healed <4982>.
