Then <2532> the whole <537> group <4128> of them <846> rose up <450> and brought <71> Jesus <846> before <1909> Pilate <4091>.
They began <756> to accuse <2723> him <846>, saying <3004>, “We <5126> found <2147> this man subverting <1294> our <2257> nation <1484>, forbidding <2967> us to pay <1325> the tribute tax <5411> to Caesar <2541> and <2532> claiming <3004> that he himself <1438> is <1510> Christ <5547>, a king <935>.”
So <1161> Pilate <4091> asked <2065> Jesus <846>, “Are <1510> you <4771> the king <935> of the Jews <2453>?” He <1161> replied <611>, “You <4771> say <3004> so.”
Then <1161> Pilate <4091> said <2036> to <4314> the chief priests <749> and <2532> the crowds <3793>, “I find <2147> no <3762> basis for an accusation <158> against <1722> this <5129> man <444>.”
But <1161> they persisted <2001> in saying <3004>, “He incites <383> the people <2992> by teaching <1321> throughout <2596> all <3650> Judea <2449>. It started <756> in <575> Galilee <1056> and ended up <2193> here <5602>!”
Now <1161> when <191> Pilate <4091> heard <191> this, he asked <1905> whether <1487> the man <444> was <1510> a Galilean <1057>.
When <2532> he learned <1921> that <3754> he was <1510> from <1537> Herod’s <2264> jurisdiction <1849>, he sent <375> him <846> over <375> to <4314> Herod <2264>, who <1510> also <2532> happened to be <1510> in <1722> Jerusalem <2414> at <1722> that <3778> time <2250>.
When <1161> Herod <2264> saw <1492> Jesus <2424>, he was <1510> very <3029> glad <5463>, for <1063> he had <2309> long <2425> <5550> desired <2309> to see <1492> him <846>, because <1223> he had heard <191> about <4012> him <846> and <2532> was hoping <1679> to see <1492> him perform <1096> some <5100> miraculous sign <4592>.
So <1161> Herod questioned <1905> him <846> at <1722> considerable <2425> length; Jesus gave him <846> no <3762> answer <611>.
The chief priests <749> and <2532> the experts in the law <1122> were there <2476>, vehemently <2159> accusing <2723> him <846>.
Even Herod <2264> with <4862> his soldiers <4753> treated <1848> him <846> with contempt <1848> and <2532> mocked <1702> him. Then, dressing <4016> him in <4016> elegant <2986> clothes <2066>, Herod sent <375> him <846> back <375> to Pilate <4091>.
That very day <2250> Herod <2264> and <2532> Pilate <4091> became <1096> friends <5384> with <3326> each other <240>, for <1063> prior <4391> to this they <846> had been <1510> enemies <2189>.
Then <1161> Pilate <4091> called together <4779> the chief priests <749>, the rulers <758>, and <2532> the people <2992>,
and said <2036> to <4314> them <846>, “You brought <4374> me <3427> this <5126> man <444> as <5613> one who was misleading <654> the people <2992>. When <2532> I <1473> examined <350> him before <1799> you <5216>, I did <2147> not <3762> find <2147> this <5129> man <444> guilty <158> of anything you accused <2723> him <846> of doing.
Neither <3761> did Herod <2264>, for <1063> he sent <375> him <846> back <4314> to us <2248>. Look <2400>, he <846> has done <4238> nothing <3762> deserving <514> death <2288>.
I will <3811> therefore <3767> have <3811> him <846> flogged <3811> and release <630> him.”
But <1161> they <349> all <3826> shouted out <349> together <3826>, “Take <142> this man <5126> away <142>! Release <630> Barabbas <912> for us <2254>!”
(This was <1510> a man <3748> who had been thrown <906> into <1722> prison <5438> for <1223> an insurrection <4714> started <1096> in <1722> the city <4172>, and <2532> for murder <5408>.)
Pilate <4091> addressed <4377> them <846> once again <3825> because he wanted <2309> to release <630> Jesus <2424>.
But <1161> they kept on shouting <2019>, “Crucify <4717>, crucify <4717> him <846>!”
A third time <5154> he said <2036> to <4314> them <846>, “Why? What <5101> wrong <2556> has he done <4160>? I have found <2147> him <846> guilty <158> of no <3762> crime deserving death <2288>. I will <3811> therefore <3767> flog <3811> him <846> and release <630> him.”
But <1161> they were insistent <1945>, demanding <154> with loud <3173> shouts <5456> that he <846> be crucified <4717>. And <2532> their <846> shouts <5456> prevailed <2729>.
So <2532> Pilate <4091> decided <1948> that their <846> demand <155> should be granted <1096>.
He released <630> the man <3739> they asked <154> for, who had been thrown <906> in <1519> prison <5438> for <1223> insurrection <4714> and <2532> murder <5408>. But <1161> he handed <3860> Jesus <2424> over <3860> to their <846> will <2307>.
As <5613> they led <520> him <846> away <520>, they seized <1949> Simon <4613> of Cyrene <2956>, who was coming in <2064> from <575> the country <68>. They placed <2007> the cross <4716> on his back <846> and made him carry <5342> it behind <3693> Jesus <2424>.
A <4128> great <4183> number <4128> of the people <2992> followed <190> him <846>, among them women <1135> who were mourning <2354> and <2532> wailing <2875> for him <846>.
But <1161> Jesus <2424> turned <4762> to <4314> them <846> and said <2036>, “Daughters <2364> of Jerusalem <2419>, do not <3361> weep <2799> for <1909> me <1691>, but <4133> weep <2799> for <1909> yourselves <1438> and <2532> for <1909> your <5216> children <5043>.
For <3754> this is certain: The days <2250> are coming <2064> when they will say <2046>, ‘Blessed <3107> are the barren <4723>, the wombs <2836> that <3739> never <3756> bore children <1080>, and <2532> the breasts <3149> that <3739> never <3756> nursed <5142>!’
Then <5119> they will begin <756> to say <3004> to the mountains <3735>, ‘Fall <4098> on <1909> us <2248>!’ and <2532> to the hills <1015>, ‘Cover <2572> us <2248>!’
For <3754> if <1487> such things <5023> are done <4160> when the wood <3586> is green <5200>, what <5101> will happen <1096> when it is dry <3584>?”
Two <1417> other <2087> criminals <2557> were <71> also <2532> led away <71> to be executed <337> with <4862> him <846>.
So <2532> when <3753> they came <2064> to <1909> the place <5117> that is called <2564> “The Skull <2898>,” they crucified <4717> him <846> there <1563>, along with the criminals <2557>, one <3739> on <1537> his right <1188> and <1161> one <3739> on <1537> his left <710>.
[But <1161> Jesus <2424> said <3004>, “Father <3962>, forgive <863> them <846>, for <1063> they <1492> don’t <3756> know <1492> what <5101> they are doing <4160>.”] Then <1161> they threw <906> dice <2819> to divide <1266> his <846> clothes <2440>.
The people <2992> also stood <2476> there watching <2334>, but <1161> the rulers <758> ridiculed <1592> him, saying <3004>, “He saved <4982> others <243>. Let him save <4982> himself <1438> if <1487> he <3778> is <1510> the Christ <5547> of God <2316>, his chosen one <1588>!”
The soldiers <4757> also <2532> mocked <1702> him <846>, coming up <4334> and offering <4374> him <846> sour wine <3690>,
and <2532> saying <3004>, “If <1487> you <4771> are <1510> the king <935> of the Jews <2453>, save <4982> yourself <4572>!”
There was <1510> also <2532> an inscription <1923> over <1909> him <846>, “This <3778> is the king <935> of the Jews <2453>.”
One <1520> of the criminals <2557> who was hanging <2910> there railed at <987> him <846>, saying, “Aren’t <3780> <1487> you <4771> the Christ <5547>? Save <4982> yourself <4572> and <2532> us <2248>!”
But <1161> the other <2087> rebuked <2008> him <846>, saying <5346>, “Don’t <3761> you <4771> fear <5399> God <2316>, since <3754> you are <1510> under <1722> the same sentence <846> of condemnation <2917>?
And <2532> we <2249> rightly <1346> so <3303>, for we are getting <514> what we deserve <618> for <1063> what <3739> we did <4238>, but <1161> this man <3778> has done <4238> nothing <3762> wrong <824>.”
Then <2532> he said <3004>, “Jesus <2424>, remember <3415> me <3450> when <3752> you come <2064> in <1519> your <4675> kingdom <932>.”
And <2532> Jesus said <2036> to him <846>, “I tell <3004> you <4671> the truth <281>, today <4594> you will be <1510> with <3326> me <1700> in <1722> paradise <3857>.”
It was <1510> now <2235> about <5616> noon <1623>, and <2532> darkness <4655> came <1096> over <1909> the whole <3650> land <1093> until <2193> three in the afternoon <5610> <1766>,
because the sun’s light <2246> failed <1587>. The temple <3485> curtain <2665> was torn <4977> in two <3319>.
Then <2532> Jesus <2424>, calling out <5455> with a <5456> loud <3173> voice <5456>, said <2036>, “Father <3962>, into <1519> your <4675> hands <5495> I commit <3908> my <3450> spirit <4151>!” And <1161> after he said <2036> this <5124> he breathed his last <1606>.
Now when <1492> the centurion <1543> saw <1492> what had happened <1096>, he praised <1392> God <2316> and said <3004>, “Certainly <3689> this <3778> man <444> was <1510> innocent <1342>!”
And <2532> all <3956> the crowds <3793> that had assembled <4836> for <1909> this <3778> spectacle <2335>, when <2334> they saw <2334> what had taken place <1096>, returned home <5290> beating <5180> their breasts <4738>.
And <1161> all <3956> those who knew <1110> Jesus <846> stood <2476> at <575> a distance <3113>, and <2532> the women <1135> who had followed <4870> him <846> from <575> Galilee <1056> saw <3708> these things <5023>.
Now <2532> there was a man <435> named <3686> Joseph <2501> who was <5225> a member of the council <1010>, a <435> good <18> and <2532> righteous <1342> man <435>.
(He <3778> had <4784> not <3756> consented <4784> to their <846> plan <1012> and <2532> action <4234>.) He was from <575> the Judean <2453> town <4172> of Arimathea <707>, and was looking forward <4327> to the kingdom <932> of God <2316>.
He <3778> went <4334> to Pilate <4091> and asked for <154> the body <4983> of Jesus <2424>.
Then <2532> he took <2507> it down <2507>, wrapped <1794> it <846> in a linen cloth <4616>, and <2532> placed <5087> it <846> in <1722> a tomb <3418> cut out of the rock <2991>, where <3757> no one <3762> had <2749> yet <3768> been buried <2749>.
It was <1510> the day <2250> of preparation <3904> and <2532> the Sabbath <4521> was beginning <2020>.
The women <1135> who <3748> had accompanied <4905> Jesus from <1537> Galilee <1056> followed <2628>, and they saw <2300> the tomb <3419> and <2532> how <5613> his <846> body <4983> was laid <5087> in it.
Then <1161> they <2090> returned <5290> and prepared <2090> aromatic spices <759> and <2532> perfumes <3464>. On the Sabbath <4521> they rested <2270> according to <2596> the commandment <1785>.
