It happened<1096> that while<1722> Apollos<625> was at Corinth<2882>, Paul<3972> passed<1330> through<1330> the upper<510> country<3313> and came<2064> to Ephesus<2181>, and found<2147> some<5100> disciples<3101>.

He said<3004> to them, "Did you receive<2983> the Holy<40> Spirit<4151> when you believed<4100>?" And they said to him, "No<3761>, we have not even<3761> heard<191> whether<1487> there is a Holy<40> Spirit<4151>."

And he said<3004>, "Into what<5101> then<3767> were you baptized<907>?" And they said<3004>, "Into John's<2491> baptism<908>."

Paul<3972> said<3004>, "John<2491> baptized<907> with the baptism<908> of repentance<3341>, telling<3004> the people<2992> to believe<4100> in Him who was coming<2064> after<3326> him, that is, in Jesus<2424>."

When they heard<191> this, they were baptized<907> in the name<3686> of the Lord<2962> Jesus<2424>.

And when Paul<3972> had laid<2007> his hands<5495> upon them, the Holy<40> Spirit<4151> came<2064> on them, and they began speaking<2980> with tongues<1100> and prophesying<4395>.

There were in all<3956> about<5616> twelve<1427> men<435>.

And he entered<1525> the synagogue<4864> and continued speaking<3955> out boldly<3955> for three<5140> months<3376>, reasoning<1256> and persuading<3982> them about<4012> the kingdom<932> of God<2316>.

But when<5613> some<5100> were becoming<4645> hardened<4645> and disobedient<544>, speaking<2551> evil<2551> of the Way<3598> before<1799> the people<4128>, he withdrew<868> from them and took<873> away<873> the disciples<3101>, reasoning<1256> daily<2596><2250> in the school<4981> of Tyrannus<5181>.

This<3778> took<1096> place<1096> for two<1417> years<2094>, so<5620> that all<3956> who lived<2730> in Asia<773> heard<191> the word<3056> of the Lord<2962>, both<5037> Jews<2453> and Greeks<1672>.

God<2316> was performing<4160> extraordinary<5177> miracles<1411> by the hands<5495> of Paul<3972>,

so<5620> that handkerchiefs<4676> or<2228> aprons<4612> were even<2532> carried<667> from his body<5559> to the sick<770>, and the diseases<3554> left<525> them and the evil<4190> spirits<4151> went<1607> out.

But also<2532> some<5100> of the Jewish<2453> exorcists<1845>, who went<4022> from place<4022> to place<4022>, attempted<2021> to name<3687> over<1909> those<3588> who had<2192> the evil<4190> spirits<4151> the name<3686> of the Lord<2962> Jesus<2424>, saying<3004>, "I adjure<3726> you by Jesus<2424> whom<3739> Paul<3972> preaches<2784>."

Seven<2033> sons<5207> of one<5100> Sceva<4630>, a Jewish<2453> chief<749> priest<749>, were doing<4160> this<3778>.

And the evil<4190> spirit<4151> answered<611> and said<3004> to them, "I recognize<1097> Jesus<2424>, and I know<1987> about<1987> Paul<3972>, but who<5101> are you?"

And the man<444>, in whom<3739> was the evil<4190> spirit<4151>, leaped<2177> on them and subdued<2634> all<297> of them and overpowered<2480> them, so<5620> that they fled<1628> out of that house<3624> naked<1131> and wounded<5135>.

This<3778> became<1096> known<1110> to all<3956>, both<5037> Jews<2453> and Greeks<1672>, who lived<2730> in Ephesus<2181>; and fear<5401> fell<1968> upon them all<3956> and the name<3686> of the Lord<2962> Jesus<2424> was being magnified<3170>.

Many<4183> also<5037> of those<3588> who had believed<4100> kept coming<2064>, confessing<1843> and disclosing<312> their practices<4234>.

And many<2425> of those<3588> who practiced<4238> magic<4021> brought<4851> their books<976> together<4851> and began burning<2618> them in the sight<1799> of everyone<3956>; and they counted<4860> up the price<5092> of them and found<2147> it fifty<3461><4002> thousand<3461> pieces<694> of silver<694>.

So<3779> the word<3056> of the Lord<2962> was growing<837> mightily<2904> and prevailing<2480>.

Now<1161> after<5613> these<3778> things<3778> were finished<4137>, Paul<3972> purposed<5087> in the Spirit<4151> to go<4198> to Jerusalem<2414> after he had passed<1330> through<1330> Macedonia<3109> and Achaia<882>, saying<3004>, "After<3326> I have been<1096> there<1563>, I must<1163> also<2532> see<3708> Rome<4516>."

And having sent<649> into Macedonia<3109> two<1417> of those<3588> who ministered<1247> to him, Timothy<5095> and Erastus<2037>, he himself<846> stayed<1907> in Asia<773> for a while<5550>.

About<2596> that time<2540> there occurred<1096> no<3756> small<3641> disturbance<5017> concerning<4012> the Way<3598>.

For a man<5100> named<3686> Demetrius<1216>, a silversmith<695>, who made<4160> silver<693> shrines<3485> of Artemis<735>, was bringing<3930> no<3756> little<3641> business<2039> to the craftsmen<5079>;

these<3739> he gathered<4867> together<4867> with the workmen<2040> of similar<5108> trades, and said<3004>, "Men<435>, you know<1987> that our prosperity<2142> depends<1510><1537> upon this<3778> business<2039>.

"You see<2334> and hear<191> that not only<3440> in Ephesus<2181>, but in almost<4975> all<3956> of Asia<773>, this<3778> Paul<3972> has persuaded<3982> and turned<3179> away<3179> a considerable<2425> number<3793> of people<3793>, saying<3004> that gods made<1096> with hands<5495> are no<3756> gods<2316> at all.

"Not only<3440> is there danger<2793> that this<3778> trade<3313> of ours<1473> fall<2064> into disrepute<557>, but also<2532> that the temple<2413> of the great<3173> goddess<2299> Artemis<735> be regarded<3049> as worthless<3762> and that she whom<3739> all<3650> of Asia<773> and the world<3625> worship<4576> will even<2532> be dethroned<2507> from her magnificence<3168>."

When they heard<191> this and were filled<4134> with rage<2372>, they began crying<2896> out, saying<3004>, "Great<3173> is Artemis<735> of the Ephesians<2180>!"

The city<4172> was filled<4092> with the confusion<4799>, and they rushed<3729> with one<3661> accord<3661> into the theater<2302>, dragging<4884> along<4884> Gaius<1050> and Aristarchus<708>, Paul's<3972> traveling<4898> companions<4898> from Macedonia<3110>.

And when Paul<3972> wanted<1014> to go<1525> into the assembly<1218>, the disciples<3101> would not let<1439> him.

Also<2532> some<5100> of the Asiarchs<775> who were friends<5384> of his sent<3992> to him and repeatedly urged<3870> him not to venture<1325><1438> into the theater<2302>.

So<3767> then<3767>, some<243> were shouting<2896> one<3303> thing and some<243> another<243>, for the assembly<1577> was in confusion<4797> and the majority<4183> did not know<3609> for what<5101> reason<1752> they had come<4905> together<4905>.

Some of the crowd<3793> concluded<4822> it was Alexander<223>, since the Jews<2453> had put<4261> him forward<4261>; and having motioned<2678> with his hand<5495>, Alexander<223> was intending<2309> to make<626> a defense<626> to the assembly<1218>.

But when they recognized<1921> that he was a Jew<2453>, a single outcry<5456> arose<1096> from them all<3956> as they shouted<2896> for about<5613> two<1417> hours<5610>, "Great<3173> is Artemis<735> of the Ephesians<2180>!"

After<1063> quieting<2687> the crowd<3793>, the town<1122> clerk<1122> *said<5346>, "Men<435> of Ephesus<2181>, what<5101> man<444> is there after<1063> all<1063> who<3739> does not know<1097> that the city<4172> of the Ephesians<2180> is guardian<3511> of the temple<3511> of the great<3173> Artemis<735> and of the image which<1356> fell<1356> down<1356> from heaven<1356>?

"So<3767>, since these<3778> are undeniable<368> facts<368>, you ought<1189> to keep<2687> calm<2687> and to do<4238> nothing<3367> rash<4312>.

"For you have brought<71> these<3778> men<435> here who are neither<3777> robbers<2417> of temples<2417> nor<3777> blasphemers<987> of our goddess<2299>.

"So<3767> then<3767>, if<1487> Demetrius<1216> and the craftsmen<5079> who are with him have<2192> a complaint<3056> against<4314> any<5100> man<5100>, the courts<60> are in session<71> and proconsuls<446> are available; let them bring<1458> charges<1458> against<1458> one<240> another<240>.

"But if<1487> you want<1934> anything<5100> beyond<4007> this, it shall be settled<1956> in the lawful<1772> assembly<1577>.

"For indeed<2532> we are in danger<2793> of being accused<1458> of a riot<4714> in connection<4012> with today's<4594> events, since there is no<3367> real cause<159> for it, and in this<3739> connection<4012> we will be unable<3756><1410> to account<3056><591> for this<3778> disorderly<4963> gathering<4963>."

After saying<3004> this<3778> he dismissed<630> the assembly<1577>.
