But a man<435> named<3686> Ananias<367>, with his wife<1135> Sapphira<4551>, sold<4453> a piece<2933> of property<2933>,
and kept<3557> back<3557> some of the price<5092> for himself, with his wife's<1135> full<4924> knowledge<4924>, and bringing<5342> a portion<3313> of it, he laid<5087> it at the apostles'<652> feet<4228>.
But Peter<4074> said<3004>, "Ananias<367>, why<1223><5101> has Satan<4567> filled<4137> your heart<2588> to lie<5574> to the Holy<40> Spirit<4151> and to keep<3557> back<3557> some of the price<5092> of the land<5564>?
"While it remained<3306> unsold, did it not remain<3306> your own? And after it was sold<4097>, was it not under<1722> your control<1849>? Why<5101> is it that you have conceived<5087> this<3778> deed<4229> in your heart<2588>? You have not lied<5574> to men<444> but to God<2316>."
And as he heard<191> these<3778> words<3056>, Ananias<367> fell<4098> down<4098> and breathed<1634> his last<1634>; and great<3173> fear<5401> came<1096> over<1909> all<3956> who heard<191> of it.
The young<3501> men<3501> got<450> up and covered<4958> him up, and after carrying<1627> him out, they buried<2290> him.
Now<1161> there elapsed<1096> an interval<1292> of about<5613> three<5140> hours<5610>, and his wife<1135> came<1525> in, not knowing<3609> what had happened<1096>.
And Peter<4074> responded<611> to her, "Tell<3004> me whether<1487> you sold<591> the land<5564> for such<5118> and such<5118> a price<5118>?" And she said<3004>, "Yes<3483>, that was the price<5118>."
Then<1161> Peter<4074> said to her, "Why<5101> is it that you have agreed<4856> together<4856> to put<3985> the Spirit<4151> of the Lord<2962> to the test<3985>? Behold<2400>, the feet<4228> of those<3588> who have buried<2290> your husband<435> are at the door<2374>, and they will carry<1627> you out as well."
And immediately<3916> she fell<4098> at his feet<4228> and breathed<1634> her last<1634>, and the young<3495> men<3495> came<1525> in and found<2147> her dead<3498>, and they carried<1627> her out and buried<2290> her beside<4314> her husband<435>.
And great<3173> fear<5401> came<1096> over<1909> the whole<3650> church<1577>, and over<1909> all<3956> who heard<191> of these<3778> things<3778>.
At the hands<5495> of the apostles<652> many<4183> signs<4592> and wonders<5059> were taking<1096> place<1096> among<1722> the people<2992>; and they were all<3956> with one<3661> accord<3661> in Solomon's<4672> portico<4745>.
But none<3762> of the rest<3062> dared<5111> to associate<2853> with them; however<235>, the people<2992> held<3170> them in high<3170> esteem<3170>.
And all<3123> the more<3123> believers<4100> in the Lord<2962>, multitudes<4128> of men<435> and women<1135>, were constantly added<4369> to their number,
to such<5620> an extent<5620> that they even<2532> carried<1627> the sick<772> out into the streets<4116> and laid<5087> them on cots<2825> and pallets<2895>, so<2443> that when Peter<4074> came<2064> by at least<2579> his shadow<4639> might fall<1982> on any<5100> one<5100> of them.
Also<2532> the people<4128> from the cities<4172> in the vicinity<4038> of Jerusalem<2419> were coming<4905> together<4905>, bringing<5342> people who were sick<772> or<2532> afflicted<3791> with unclean<169> spirits<4151>, and they were all<537> being healed<2323>.
But the high<749> priest<749> rose<450> up, along<2532> with all<3956> his associates<4862> (that is the sect<139> of the Sadducees<4523>), and they were filled<4092> with jealousy<2205>.
They laid<1911> hands<5495> on the apostles<652> and put<5087> them in a public<1219> jail<5084>.
But during<1223> the night<3571> an angel<32> of the Lord<2962> opened<455> the gates<2374> of the prison<5438>, and taking<1806> them out he said<3004>,
"Go<4198>, stand<2476> and speak<2980> to the people<2992> in the temple<2413> the whole<3956> message<4487> of this<3778> Life<2222>."
Upon hearing<191> this, they entered<1525> into the temple<2413> about<5259> daybreak<3722> and began to teach<1321>. Now<1161> when the high<749> priest<749> and his associates<4862> came<1525>, they called<4779> the Council<4892> together<4779>, even<2532> all<3956> the Senate<1087> of the sons<5207> of Israel<2274>, and sent<649> orders to the prison<1201> house<1201> for them to be brought<71>.
But the officers<5257> who came<3854> did not find<2147> them in the prison<5438>; and they returned<390> and reported<518> back,
saying<3004>, "We found<2147> the prison<1201> house<1201> locked<2808> quite<3956> securely<803> and the guards<5441> standing<2476> at the doors<2374>; but when we had opened<455> up, we found<2147> no<3762> one<3762> inside<2080>."
Now<1161> when<5613> the captain<4755> of the temple<2413> guard and the chief<749> priests<749> heard<191> these<3778> words<3056>, they were greatly<1280> perplexed<1280> about<4012> them as to what<5101> would come<1096> of this<3778>.
But someone<5100> came<3854> and reported<518> to them, "The men<435> whom<3739> you put<5087> in prison<5438> are standing<2476> in the temple<2413> and teaching<1321> the people<2992>!"
Then<5119> the captain<4755> went<565> along<565> with the officers<5257> and proceeded to bring<71> them back without<3756><3326> violence<970> (for they were afraid<5399> of the people<2992>, that they might be stoned<3034>).
When they had brought<71> them, they stood<2476> them before<1722> the Council<4892>. The high<749> priest<749> questioned<1905> them,
saying<3004>, "We gave<3853> you strict<3852> orders<3852> not to continue teaching<1321> in this<3778> name<3686>, and yet<2400>, you have filled<4137> Jerusalem<2419> with your teaching<1322> and intend<1014> to bring<1863> this<3778> man's<444> blood<129> upon us."
But Peter<4074> and the apostles<652> answered<611>, "We must<1163> obey<3980> God<2316> rather<3123> than<2228> men<444>.
"The God<2316> of our fathers<3962> raised<1453> up Jesus<2424>, whom<3739> you had put<1315> to death<1315> by hanging<2910> Him on a cross<3586>.
"He is the one whom God<2316> exalted<5312> to His right<1188> hand<1188> as a Prince<747> and a Savior<4990>, to grant<1325> repentance<3341> to Israel<2274>, and forgiveness<859> of sins<266>.
"And we are witnesses<3144> of these<3778> things<4487>; and so is the Holy<40> Spirit<4151>, whom<3739> God<2316> has given<1325> to those<3588> who obey<3980> Him."
But when they heard<191> this, they were cut<1282> to the quick<1282> and intended<1014> to kill<337> them.
But a Pharisee<5330> named<3686> Gamaliel<1059>, a teacher<3547> of the Law<3547>, respected<5093> by all<3956> the people<2992>, stood<450> up in the Council<4892> and gave<2753> orders<2753> to put<4160> the men<444> outside<1854> for a short<1024> time<1024>.
And he said<3004> to them, "Men<435> of Israel<2475>, take<4337> care<4337> what<5101> you propose<3195> to do<4238> with these<3778> men<444>.
"For some<3778> time<2250> ago<4253> Theudas<2333> rose<450> up, claiming<3004> to be somebody<5100>, and a group<706> of about<5613> four<5071> hundred<5071> men<435> joined<4346> up with him. But he was killed<337>, and all<3956> who<3745> followed<3982> him were dispersed<1262> and came<1096> to nothing<3762>.
"After<3326> this<3778> man<3778>, Judas<2455> of Galilee<1057> rose<450> up in the days<2250> of the census<582> and drew<868> away<868> some people<2992> after<3694> him; he too<2548> perished<622>, and all<3956> those who<3745> followed<3982> him were scattered<1287>.
"So<2532> in the present<3568> case<3568>, I say<3004> to you, stay<868> away<868> from these<3778> men<444> and let<863> them alone<863>, for if<1437> this<3778> plan<1012> or<2228> action<2041> is of men<444>, it will be overthrown<2647>;
but if<1487> it is of God<2316>, you will not be able<1410> to overthrow<2647> them; or<3379> else<3379> you may even<2532> be found<2147> fighting<2314> against<2314> God<2314>."
They took<3982> his advice<3982>; and after calling<4341> the apostles<652> in, they flogged<1194> them and ordered<3853> them not to speak<2980> in the name<3686> of Jesus<2424>, and then released<630> them.
So<3767> they went<4198> on their way<4198> from the presence<4383> of the Council<4892>, rejoicing<5463> that they had been considered<2661> worthy<2661> to suffer<718> shame<818> for His name<3686>.
And every<3956> day<2250>, in the temple<2413> and from house<3624> to house<3624>, they kept<3756><3973> right<3756><3973> on teaching<1321> and preaching<2097> Jesus<2424> as the Christ<5547>.
