Now<1161> when morning<4407> came<1096>, all<3956> the chief<749> priests<749> and the elders<4245> of the people<2992> conferred<4824><2983> together against<2596> Jesus<2424> to put<2289> Him to death<2289>;
and they bound<1210> Him, and led<520> Him away<520> and delivered<3860> Him to Pilate<4091> the governor<2232>.
Then<5119> when Judas<2455>, who had betrayed<3860> Him, saw<3708> that He had been condemned<2632>, he felt<3338> remorse<3338> and returned<4762> the thirty<5144> pieces<694> of silver<694> to the chief<749> priests<749> and elders<4245>,
saying<3004>, "I have sinned<264> by betraying<3860> innocent<121> blood<129>." But they said<3004>, "What<5101> is that to us? See<3708> to that yourself<4771>!"
And he threw<4496> the pieces<694> of silver<694> into the temple<3485> sanctuary<3485> and departed<402>; and he went<565> away<565> and hanged<519> himself.
The chief<749> priests<749> took<2983> the pieces<694> of silver<694> and said<3004>, "It is not lawful<1832> to put<906> them into the temple<2878> treasury<2878>, since<1893> it is the price<5092> of blood<129>."
And they conferred<4824><2983> together<4824> and with the money<846> bought<59> the Potter's<2763> Field<68> as a burial<5027> place<5027> for strangers<3581>.
For this<1352> reason<1352> that field<68> has been called<2564> the Field<68> of Blood<129> to this<4594> day<4594>.
Then<5119> that which was spoken<3004> through<1223> Jeremiah<2408> the prophet<4396> was fulfilled<4137>: "AND THEY TOOK<2983> THE THIRTY<5144> PIECES<694> OF SILVER<694>, THE PRICE<5092> OF THE ONE WHOSE<3739> PRICE<5091> HAD BEEN SET<5091> by the sons<5207> of Israel<2474>;
AND THEY GAVE<1325> THEM FOR THE POTTER'S<2763> FIELD<68>, AS THE LORD<2962> DIRECTED<4929> ME."
Now<1161> Jesus<2424> stood<2476> before<1715> the governor<2232>, and the governor<2232> questioned<1905> Him, saying<3004>, "Are You the King<935> of the Jews<2453>?" And Jesus<2424> said<5346> to him,
And while<1722> He was being accused<2723> by the chief<749> priests<749> and elders<4245>, He did not answer<611>.
Then<5119> Pilate<4091> *said<3004> to Him, "Do You not hear<191> how<4214> many<4214> things<4214> they testify<2649> against<2649> You?"
And He did not answer<611> him with regard<4314> to even<3761> a single charge<4487>, so<5620> the governor<2232> was quite<3029> amazed<2296>.
Now<1161> at the feast<1859> the governor<2232> was accustomed<1486> to release<630> for the people<3793> any one<1520> prisoner<1198> whom<3739> they wanted<2309>.
At that time<5119> they were holding<2192> a notorious<1978> prisoner<1198>, called<3004> Barabbas<912>.
So<3767> when the people<846> gathered<4863> together<4863>, Pilate<4091> said<3004> to them, "Whom<5101> do you want<2309> me to release<630> for you? Barabbas<912>, or<2228> Jesus<2424> who is called<3004> Christ<5547>?"
For he knew<3609> that because<1223> of envy<5355> they had handed<3860> Him over.
While he was sitting<2521> on the judgment<968> seat<968>, his wife<1135> sent<649> him a message, saying<3004>, "Have nothing<3367> to do with that righteous<1342> Man<1342>; for last<4594> night<4594> I suffered<3958> greatly<4183> in a dream<3677> because<1223> of Him."
But the chief<749> priests<749> and the elders<4245> persuaded<3982> the crowds<3793> to ask<154> for Barabbas<912> and to put<622> Jesus<2424> to death<622>.
But the governor<2232> said<3004> to them, "Which<5101> of the two<1417> do you want<2309> me to release<630> for you?" And they said<3004>, "Barabbas<912>."
Pilate<4091> *said<3004> to them, "Then<3767> what<5101> shall I do<4160> with Jesus<2424> who is called<3004> Christ<5547>?" They all<3956> *said<3004>, "Crucify<4717> Him!"
And he said<5346>, "Why<1063>, what<5101> evil<2556> has He done<4160>?" But they kept shouting<2896> all<4057> the more<4057>, saying<3004>, "Crucify<4717> Him!"
When Pilate<4091> saw<3708> that he was accomplishing<5623> nothing<3762>, but rather<3123> that a riot<2351> was starting<1096>, he took<2983> water<5204> and washed<633> his hands<5495> in front<2713> of the crowd<3793>, saying<3004>, "I am<1510> innocent<121> of this<3778> Man's<3778> blood<129>; see<3708> to that yourselves<4771>."
And all<3956> the people<2992> said<3004>, "His blood<129> shall be on us and on our children<5043>!"
Then<5119> he released<630> Barabbas<912> for them; but after having Jesus<2424> scourged<5417>, he handed<3860> Him over to be crucified<4717>.
Then<5119> the soldiers<4757> of the governor<2232> took<3880> Jesus<2424> into the Praetorium<4232> and gathered<4863> the whole<3650> Roman cohort<4686> around<1909> Him.
They stripped<1562> Him and put<4060> a scarlet<2847> robe<5511> on Him.
And after twisting<4120> together a crown<4735> of thorns<173>, they put<2007> it on His head<2776>, and a reed<2563> in His right<1188> hand<1188>; and they knelt<1120> down<1120> before<1715> Him and mocked<1702> Him, saying<3004>, "Hail<5463>, King<935> of the Jews<2453>!"
They spat<1716> on Him, and took<2983> the reed<2563> and began to beat<5180> Him on the head<2776>.
After<3753> they had mocked<1702> Him, they took<1562> the scarlet robe<5511> off<1562> Him and put<1746> His own garments<2440> back on Him, and led<520> Him away<520> to crucify<4717> Him.
As they were coming<1831> out, they found<2147> a man<444> of Cyrene<2956> named<3686> Simon<4613>, whom<3778> they pressed<29> into service<29> to bear<142> His cross<4716>.
And when they came<2064> to a place<5117> called<3004> Golgotha<1115>, which<3739> means<3004> Place<5117> of a Skull<2898>,
they gave<1325> Him wine<3631> to drink<4095> mixed<3396> with gall<5521>; and after tasting<1089> it, He was unwilling<3756><2309> to drink<4095>.
And when they had crucified<4717> Him, they divided<1266> up His garments<2440> among<1266> themselves by casting<906> lots<2819>.
And sitting<2521> down<2521>, they began to keep<5083> watch<5083> over<5083> Him there<1563>.
And above<1883> His head<2776> they put<2007> up the charge<156> against<156> Him which read<1125>, "THIS<3778> IS JESUS<2424> THE KING<935> OF THE JEWS<2453>."
At that time<5119> two<1417> robbers<3027> *were crucified<4717> with Him, one<1520> on the right<1188> and one<1520> on the left<2176>.
And those<3588> passing<3899> by were hurling<987> abuse<987> at Him, wagging<2795> their heads<2776>
and saying<3004>, "You who are going to destroy<2647> the temple<3485> and rebuild<3618> it in three<5140> days<2250>, save<4982> Yourself<4572>! If<1487> You are the Son<5207> of God<2316>, come<2597> down<2597> from the cross<4716>."
In the same<3668> way<3668> the chief<749> priests<749> also<2532>, along with the scribes<1122> and elders<4245>, were mocking<1702> Him and saying<3004>,
"He saved<4982> others<243>; He cannot<1410><3756> save<4982> Himself<1438>. He is the King<935> of Israel<2474>; let Him now<3568> come<2597> down<2597> from the cross<4716>, and we will believe<4100> in Him.
"HE TRUSTS<3982> IN GOD<2316>; LET GOD<2316> RESCUE<4506> Him now<3568>, IF<1487> HE DELIGHTS<2309> IN HIM; for He said<3004>, 'I am<1510> the Son<5207> of God<2316>.'"
The robbers<3027> who had been crucified<4957> with Him were also<2532> insulting<3679> Him with the same<846> words.
Now<1161> from the sixth<1623> hour<5610> darkness<4655> fell<1096> upon all<3956> the land<1093> until<2193> the ninth<1729> hour<5610>.
About<4012> the ninth<1729> hour<5610> Jesus<2424> cried<310> out with a loud<3173> voice<5456>, saying<3004>,
And some<5100> of those<3588> who were standing<2476> there<1563>, when they heard<191> it, began saying<3004>, "This<3778> man<3778> is calling<5455> for Elijah<2243>."
Immediately<2112> one<1520> of them ran<5143>, and taking<2983> a sponge<4699>, he filled<4092> it with sour<3690> wine<3690> and put<4060> it on a reed<2563>, and gave<4222> Him a drink<4222>.
But the rest<3062> of them said<3004>, "Let<863> us see<3708> whether<1487> Elijah<2243> will come<2064> to save<4982> Him."
And Jesus<2424> cried<2896> out again<3825> with a loud<3173> voice<5456>, and yielded<863> up His spirit<4151>.
And behold<2400>, the veil<2665> of the temple<3485> was torn<4977> in two<1417> from top<509> to bottom<2736>; and the earth<1093> shook<4579> and the rocks<4073> were split<4977>.
The tombs<3419> were opened<455>, and many<4183> bodies<4983> of the saints<40> who had fallen<2837> asleep<2837> were raised<1453>;
and coming<1831> out of the tombs<3419> after<3326> His resurrection<1454> they entered<1525> the holy<40> city<4172> and appeared<1718> to many<4183>.
Now<1161> the centurion<1543>, and those<3588> who were with him keeping<5083> guard<5083> over<5083> Jesus<2424>, when they saw<3708> the earthquake<4578> and the things that were happening<1096>, became very<4970> frightened<5399> and said<3004>, "Truly<230> this<3778> was the Son<5207> of God<2316>!"
Many<4183> women<1135> were there<1563> looking<2334> on from a distance<3113>, who<3748> had followed<190> Jesus<2424> from Galilee<1056> while ministering<1247> to Him.
Among<1722> them was Mary<3137> Magdalene<3094>, and Mary<3137> the mother<3384> of James<2385> and Joseph<2501>, and the mother<3384> of the sons<5207> of Zebedee<2199>.
When it was evening<3798>, there came<2064> a rich<4145> man<444> from Arimathea<707>, named<5122> Joseph<2501>, who<3739> himself<846> had also<2532> become<3100> a disciple<3100> of Jesus<2424>.
This<3778> man<3778> went<4334> to Pilate<4091> and asked<154> for the body<4983> of Jesus<2424>. Then<5119> Pilate<4091> ordered<2753> it to be given<591> to him.
And Joseph<2501> took<2983> the body<4983> and wrapped<1794> it in a clean<2513> linen<4616> cloth<4616>,
and laid<5087> it in his own new<2537> tomb<3419>, which<3739> he had hewn<2998> out in the rock<4073>; and he rolled<4351> a large<3173> stone<3037> against the entrance<2374> of the tomb<3419> and went<565> away<565>.
And Mary<3137> Magdalene<3094> was there<1563>, and the other<243> Mary<3137>, sitting<2521> opposite<561> the grave<5028>.
Now<1161> on the next<1887> day<1887>, the day<1887> after<3326> the preparation<3904>, the chief<749> priests<749> and the Pharisees<5330> gathered<4863> together<4863> with Pilate<4091>,
and said<3004>, "Sir<2962>, we remember<3403> that when He was still<2089> alive<2198> that deceiver<4108> said<3004>, 'After<3326> three<5140> days<2250> I am to rise<1453> again<1453>.'
"Therefore<3767>, give<2753> orders<2753> for the grave<5028> to be made<805> secure<805> until<2193> the third<5154> day<2250>, otherwise<3379> His disciples<3101> may come<2064> and steal<2813> Him away<2813> and say<3004> to the people<2992>, 'He has risen<1453> from the dead<3498>,' and the last<2078> deception<4106> will be worse<5501> than the first<4413>."
Pilate<4091> said<5346> to them, "You have<2192> a guard<2892>; go<5217>, make<805> it as secure<805> as you know<3609> how<3609>."
And they went<4198> and made<805> the grave<5028> secure<805>, and along with the guard<2892> they set<4972> a seal<4972> on the stone<3037>.
