 <<  Markus 8 >>

In <1722> those <1565> days <2250> there was <1510> another <3825> large <4183> crowd <3793> with nothing <3361> to eat <5315>. So Jesus called <4341> his disciples <3101> and said <3004> to them <846>,

“I have compassion <4697> on <1909> the crowd <3793>, because <3754> they have <4357> already <2235> been here <4357> with me <3427> three <5140> days <2250>, and <2532> they have <2192> nothing <3756> to eat <5315>.

If <1437> I send <630> them <846> home <3624> hungry <3523>, they will faint <1590> on <1722> the way <3598>, and <2532> some <5100> of them <846> have come <1510> from <575> a great distance <3113>.”

His <846> disciples <3101> answered <611> him <846>, “Where <4159> can <1410> someone <5100> get enough bread <740> in <1909> this <5602> desolate place <2047> to satisfy <5526> these people <5128>?”

He asked <2065> them <846>, “How many <4214> loaves <740> do you have <2192>?” They replied <3004>, “Seven <2033>.”

Then <2532> he directed <3853> the crowd <3793> to sit down <377> on <1909> the ground <1093>. After <2983> he took <2983> the seven <2033> loaves <740> and gave thanks <2168>, he broke <2806> them and <2532> began giving <1325> them to the disciples <3101> to <2443> serve <3908>. So <2532> they served <3908> the crowd <3793>.

They <2192> also <2532> had <2192> a few <3641> small fish <2485>. After giving thanks <2127> for these <846>, he told <2036> them to serve <3908> these <3778> as well.

Everyone ate <5315> and <2532> was satisfied <5526>, and <2532> they picked up <142> the broken pieces <2801> left over <4051>, seven <2033> baskets <4711> full.

There were <1510> about <5613> four thousand <5070> who ate. Then <2532> he dismissed <630> them <846>.

Immediately <2117> he got <1684> into <1519> a boat <4143> with <3326> his <846> disciples <3101> and went <2064> to <1519> the district <3313> of Dalmanutha <1148>.

Then <2532> the Pharisees <5330> came <1831> and <2532> began <756> to argue <4802> with Jesus <846>, asking <2212> for <3844> a sign <4592> from <575> heaven <3772> to test <3985> him <846>.

Sighing deeply <389> in his <846> spirit <4151> he said <3004>, “Why <5101> does <2212> this <3778> generation <1074> look for <2212> a sign <4592>? I tell <3004> you the truth <281>, no <1487> sign <4592> will be given <1325> to this <3778> generation <1074>.”

Then <2532> he left <863> them <846>, got <1684> back <3825> into the boat <1684>, and went <565> to <1519> the other side <4008>.

Now they had forgotten <1950> to take <2983> bread <740>, except <1487> <3361> for one <1520> loaf <740> they had <2192> with <3326> them <1438> in <1722> the boat <4143>.

And <2532> Jesus ordered <1291> them <846>, “Watch out <3708>! Beware <991> of <575> the yeast <2219> of the Pharisees <5330> and <2532> the yeast <2219> of Herod <2264>!”

So <2532> they began to discuss <1260> with <4314> one another <240> about <3754> having <2192> no <3756> bread <740>.

When <2532> he learned <1097> of this, Jesus said <3004> to them <846>, “Why <5101> are you arguing <1260> about <3754> having <2192> no <3756> bread <740>? Do you <3539> still <3768> not see <3539> or <3761> understand <4920>? Have <2192> your <5216> hearts <2588> been hardened <4456>?

Though you have <2192> eyes <3788>, don’t <3756> you see <991>? And <2532> though you have <2192> ears <3775>, can’t <3756> you hear <191>? Don’t <3756> you remember <3421>?

When <3753> I broke <2806> the five <4002> loaves <740> for <1519> the five thousand <4000>, how many <4214> baskets <2894> full <4134> of pieces <2801> did you pick up <142>?” They replied <3004>, “Twelve <1427>.”

“When <3753> I broke the seven <2033> loaves for <1519> the four thousand <5070>, how many <4214> baskets <4711> full <4138> of pieces <2801> did you pick up <142>?” They replied <3004>, “Seven <2033>.”

Then <2532> he said <3004> to them <846>, “Do you <4920> still not <3768> understand <4920>?”

Then <2532> they came <2064> to <1519> Bethsaida <966>. They brought <5342> a blind man <5185> to Jesus <846> and <2532> asked <3870> him <846> to <2443> touch <680> him <846>.

He <2532> took <1949> the blind man <5185> by the hand <5495> and brought <1627> him <846> outside <1854> of <2968> the village <2968>. Then <2532> he spit <4429> on <1519> his <846> eyes <3659>, placed <2007> his hands <5495> on his <846> eyes and asked <1905>, “Do you see <991> anything <5100>?”

Regaining <308> his sight <308> he said <3004>, “I see <991> people <444>, but they look like <5613> trees <1186> walking <4043>.”

Then <1534> Jesus placed <5087> his hands <5495> on <1909> the man’s <846> eyes <3788> again <3825>. And <2532> he opened <1227> his eyes <1227>, his sight was restored <600>, and <2532> he saw <1689> everything <537> clearly <5081>.

Jesus sent <649> him <846> home <3624>, saying <3004>, “Do <1525> not even <3366> go <1525> into <1519> the village <2968>.”

Then <2532> Jesus <2424> and <2532> his <846> disciples <3101> went <1831> to <1519> the villages <2968> of Caesarea <2542> Philippi <5376>. On <1722> the way <3598> he asked <1905> his <846> disciples <3101>, “Who <5101> do <3004> people <444> say <3004> that I <3165> am?”

They said <3004>, “John <2491> the Baptist <910>, others <243> say <3004> Elijah <2243>, and still others <243>, one <1520> of the prophets <4396>.”

He <2532> asked <1905> them <846>, “But <1161> who <5101> do you say <3004> that I <3165> am <1510>?” Peter <4074> answered <611> him <846>, “You <4771> are <1510> the Christ <5547>.”

Then <2532> he warned <2008> them <846> not <3367> to tell <3004> anyone <3367> about <4012> him <846>.

Then <2532> Jesus began <756> to teach <1321> them <846> that <3754> the Son <5207> of Man <444> must <1163> suffer <3958> many things <4183> and <2532> be rejected <593> by <5259> the elders <4245>, chief priests <749>, and <2532> experts in the law <1122>, and <2532> be killed <615>, and <2532> after <3326> three <5140> days <2250> rise <450> again.

He <2532> spoke <2980> openly <3954> about this <3056>. So <2532> Peter <4074> took <4355> him <846> aside <4355> and began <756> to rebuke <2008> him <846>.

But <1161> after turning <1994> and <2532> looking at <1492> his <846> disciples <3101>, he rebuked <2008> Peter <4074> and <2532> said <3004>, “Get <5217> behind <3694> me <3450>, Satan <4567>. You are <5426> not <3756> setting <5426> your mind on God’s interests <2316>, but <235> on man’s <444>.”

Then <2532> Jesus called <4341> the crowd <3793>, along with <4862> his <846> disciples <3101>, and said <2036> to them <846>, “If <1487> anyone <5100> wants <2309> to become <2064> my <3450> follower <3694>, he must deny <533> himself <1438>, take up <142> his <846> cross <4716>, and <2532> follow <190> me <3427>.

For <1063> whoever <1437> wants <2309> to save <4982> his <1438> life <5590> will lose <622> it <846>, but <1161> whoever <302> loses <622> his <846> life <5590> for <1752> my <1700> sake <1752> and <2532> for the gospel <2098> will save <4982> it <846>.

For <1063> what <5101> benefit <5623> is it for a person <444> to gain <2770> the whole <3650> world <2889>, yet <2532> forfeit <2210> his <846> life <5590>?

What <5101> can <1325> a person <444> give <1325> in exchange <465> for his <846> life <5590>?

For <1063> if <1437> anyone <3739> is ashamed <1870> of me <3165> and <2532> my <1699> words <3056> in <1722> this <3778> adulterous <3428> and <2532> sinful <268> generation <1074>, the Son <5207> of Man <444> will <1870> also be ashamed <1870> of him <846> when <3752> he comes <2064> in <1722> the glory <1391> of <3962> his <846> Father <3962> with <3326> the holy <40> angels <32>.”
