After <3326> this <5023> Jesus <2424> traveled throughout <4043> Galilee <1056>. He stayed out <4043> of <1722> Judea <2449> because <3754> the Jewish leaders <2453> wanted <2212> to kill <615> him <846>.
Now the Jewish <2453> feast <1859> of Tabernacles <4634> was <1510> near <1451>.
So <3767> Jesus <846>’ brothers <80> advised <2036> him <846>, “Leave <3327> here <1782> and <2532> go <5217> to <1519> Judea <2449> so <2443> your <4675> disciples <3101> may see <2334> your <4675> miracles <2041> that <3739> you are performing <4160>.
For <1063> no one <3762> who seeks <2212> to make a reputation <3954> for himself <846> does <4160> anything in <1722> secret <2927>. If <1487> you are doing <4160> these things <5023>, show <5319> yourself <4572> to the world <2889>.”
(For <1063> not even <3761> his own <846> brothers <80> believed <4100> in <1519> him <846>.)
So <3767> Jesus <2424> replied <3004>, “My <1699> time <2540> has not <3918> yet <3768> arrived <3918>, but <1161> you <5212> are <1510> ready <2092> at any opportunity <2540> <3842>!
The world <2889> cannot <3756> <1410> hate <3404> you <5209>, but <1161> it hates <3404> me <1691>, because <3754> I <1473> am testifying <3140> about <4012> it <846> that <3754> its <846> deeds <2041> are <1510> evil <4190>.
You <5210> go up <305> to <1519> the feast <1859> yourselves. I <1473> am <305> not <3768> going up <305> to <1519> this <3778> feast <1859> because <3754> my <1699> time <2540> has <4137> not yet <3768> fully arrived <4137>.”
When <2036> he had said <2036> this <5023>, he remained <3306> in <1722> Galilee <1056>.
But <1161> when <5613> his <846> brothers <80> had gone up <305> to <1519> the feast <1859>, then <5119> Jesus himself <846> also <2532> went up <305>, not <3756> openly <5320> but <235> in <1722> secret <2927>.
So <3767> the Jewish leaders <2453> were looking for <2212> him <846> at <1722> the feast <1859>, asking <3004>, “Where <4226> is <1510> he <1565>?”
There was <1510> a lot of <4183> grumbling <1112> about <4012> him <846> among <1722> the crowds <3793>. Some <3303> were saying <3004>, “He is <1510> a good man <18>,” but <235> others <243>, “He deceives <4105> the common people <3793>.”
However <3305>, no one <3762> spoke <2980> openly <3954> about <4012> him <846> for <1223> fear <5401> of the Jewish leaders <2453>.
When the feast <1859> was <2235> half over <3322>, Jesus <2424> went up <305> to <1519> the temple courts <2411> and <2532> began to teach <1321>.
Then <3767> the Jewish leaders <2453> were astonished <2296> and said <3004>, “How <4459> does <1492> this man <3778> know <1492> so much when he has <3129> never had <3361> formal instruction <3129>?”
So <3767> Jesus <2424> replied <611> <2036>, “My <1699> teaching <1322> is <1510> not <3756> from me <1699>, but <235> from the one who sent <3992> me <3165>.
If <1437> anyone <5100> wants <2309> to do <4160> God’s <846> will <2307>, he will know <1097> about <4012> my teaching <1322>, whether <4220> it is <1510> from <1537> God <2316> or whether <2228> I <1473> speak <2980> from <575> my own authority <1683>.
The person who speaks <2980> on his own <1438> authority desires to receive <2212> honor <1391> for himself <2398>; the one who desires <2212> the honor <1391> of the one who sent <3992> him <846> is <1510> a man <3778> of integrity <227>, and <2532> there is <1510> no <3756> unrighteousness <93> in <1722> him <846>.
Hasn’t <3756> Moses <3475> given <1325> you <5213> the law <3551>? Yet <2532> not one <3762> of <1537> you <5216> keeps <4160> the law <3551>! Why <5101> do you want <2212> to kill <615> me <3165>?”
The crowd <3793> answered <611>, “You’re possessed <2192> by a demon <1140>! Who <5101> is trying <2212> to kill <615> you <4571>?”
Jesus <2424> replied <611> <2036>, “I performed <4160> one <1520> miracle <2041> and <2532> you are <2296> all <3956> amazed <2296>.
However <5124>, because <1223> Moses <3475> gave <1325> you <5213> the practice of circumcision <4061> (not <3756> that <3754> it came <1510> from <1537> Moses <3475>, but <235> from <1537> the forefathers <3962>), you circumcise <4059> a male child <444> on <1722> the Sabbath <4521>.
But if <1487> a male child <444> is circumcised <4061> <2983> on <1722> the Sabbath <4521> so that <2443> the law <3551> of Moses <3475> is <3089> not <3361> broken <3089>, why are you angry <5520> with me <1698> because <3754> I made <4160> a man <444> completely <3650> well <5199> on <1722> the Sabbath <4521>?
Do <2919> not <3361> judge <2919> according <2596> to external appearance <3799>, but <235> judge <2919> with proper <1342> judgment <2920>.”
Then <3767> some <5100> of <1537> the residents of Jerusalem <2415> began to say <3004>, “Isn’t <3756> <1510> this <3778> the man <3739> they are trying <2212> to kill <615>?
Yet <2532> here he is, speaking <2980> publicly <3954>, and <2532> they are saying <3004> nothing <3762> to him <846>. Do the rulers <758> really <230> know <1097> that <3754> this man <3778> is <1510> the Christ <5547>?
But <235> we know <1492> where <4159> this man <5126> comes <1510> from. Whenever <3752> the Christ <5547> comes <2064>, no one <3762> will know <1097> where <4159> he comes from <1510>.”
Then <3767> Jesus <2424>, while teaching <1321> in <1722> the temple courts <2411>, cried out <2896>, “You <1492> both know <1492> me <2504> and <2532> know <1492> where <4159> I come from <1510>! And <2532> I have <2064> not <3756> come <2064> on <575> my own initiative <1683>, but <235> the one who sent <3992> me <3165> is <1510> true <228>. You <5210> do <1492> not <3756> know <1492> him,
but I <1473> know <1492> him <846>, because <3754> I have come <1510> from <3844> him <846> and he <2548> sent <649> me <3165>.”
So then <3767> they tried <2212> to seize <4084> Jesus <846>, but <2532> no one <3762> laid <1911> a hand <5495> on <1909> him <846>, because <3754> his <846> time <5610> had <2064> not yet <3768> come <2064>.
Yet <1161> many <4183> of <1537> the crowd <3793> believed <4100> in <1519> him <846> and <2532> said <3004>, “Whenever <3752> the Christ <5547> comes <2064>, he <4160> won’t <3361> perform <4160> more <4119> miraculous signs <4592> than <4119> this man <3778> did, will he <4160>?”
The Pharisees <5330> heard <191> the crowd <3793> murmuring <1111> these things <5023> about <4012> Jesus <846>, so the chief priests <749> and <2532> the Pharisees <5330> sent <649> officers <5257> to <2443> arrest <4084> him <846>.
Then <3767> Jesus <2424> said <2036>, “I will be with <3326> you <5216> for only a <5550> little <3398> while <5550> longer <2089>, and then <2532> I am going <5217> to <4314> the one who sent <3992> me <3165>.
You will look for <2212> me <3165> but <2532> will <2147> not <3756> find <2147> me <3165>, and <2532> where <3699> I <1473> am <1510> you <5210> cannot <3756> <1410> come <2064>.”
Then <3767> the Jewish leaders <2453> said <2036> to <4314> one another <1438>, “Where <4226> is <3195> he <3778> going <3195> to go <4198> that <3754> we <2249> cannot <3756> find <2147> him <846>? He is <3195> not <3361> going <3195> to go <4198> to the Jewish people dispersed <1290> among the Greeks <1672> and <2532> teach <1321> the Greeks <1672>, is he?
What <5101> did he <3778> mean <3056> by saying <2036>, ‘You will look for <2212> me <3165> but <2532> will <2147> not <3756> find <2147> me <3165>, and <2532> where <3699> I <1473> am <1510> you <5210> cannot <3756> <1410> come <2064>’?”
On <1722> the last <2078> day <2250> of the feast <1859>, the greatest <3173> day, Jesus <2424> stood up <2476> and <2532> shouted out <2896>, “If <1437> anyone <5100> is thirsty <1372>, let him come <2064> to <4314> me <3165>, and <2532>
let the one who believes <4100> in <1519> me <1691> drink. Just <2531> as the scripture <1124> says, ‘From <1537> within <2836> him <846> will flow <4482> rivers <4215> of living <2198> water <5204>.’”
(Now <1161> he said <2036> this <5124> about <4012> the Spirit <4151>, whom <3739> those who believed <4100> in <1519> him <846> were going <3195> to receive <2983>, for <1063> the Spirit <4151> had <1510> not yet <3768> been given <1510>, because <3754> Jesus <2424> was <1392> not yet <3768> glorified <1392>.)
When <3767> they heard <191> these <5130> words <3056>, some <1537> of the crowd <3793> began to say <3004>, “This <3778> really <230> is <1510> the Prophet <4396>!”
Others <243> said <3004>, “This <3778> is <1510> the Christ <5547>!” But <1161> still others said <3004>, “No <3361>, for <1063> the Christ <5547> doesn’t come <2064> from <1537> Galilee <1056>, does he?
Don’t <3756> the scriptures <1124> say <2036> that <3754> the Christ <5547> is a descendant <4690> of David <1138> and <2532> comes <2064> from <575> Bethlehem <965>, the village <2968> where <3699> David <1138> lived <1510>?”
So <3767> there was <1096> a division <4978> in <1722> the crowd <3793> because of <1223> Jesus <846>.
Some <5100> of <1537> them <846> were wanting <2309> to seize <4084> him <846>, but <235> no one <3762> laid <906> a hand <5495> on <1909> him <846>.
Then <3767> the officers <5257> returned <2064> to <4314> the chief priests <749> and <2532> Pharisees <5330>, who said <2036> to them <846>, “Why <5101> didn’t <3756> you bring <71> him <846> back <71> with you?”
The officers <5257> replied <611>, “No one ever <3763> spoke <2980> like <3779> this man <444>!”
Then <3767> the Pharisees <5330> answered <611>, “You <5210> haven’t <3361> been deceived <4105> too <2532>, have you?
None <3361> of <1537> the rulers <758> or <2228> the Pharisees <5330> have believed <4100> in <1519> him <846>, have they?
But <235> this <3778> rabble <3793> who do <1097> not <3361> know <1097> the law <3551> are <1510> accursed <1944>!”
Nicodemus <3530>, who had gone <2064> to <4314> Jesus <846> before <4386> and who was <1510> one <1520> of <1537> the rulers <846>, said <3004>,
“Our <2257> law <3551> doesn’t <3361> condemn <2919> a man <444> unless <1437> <3361> it <191> first <4412> hears <191> from <3844> him <846> and <2532> learns <1097> what <5101> he is doing <4160>, does it?”
They replied <3004>, “You <4771> aren’t <3361> from <1537> Galilee <1056> too <2532>, are you <1510>? Investigate carefully <2045> and <2532> you will see <1492> that <3754> no <3756> prophet <4396> comes <1453> from <1537> Galilee <1056>!”
[[And <2532> each one <1538> departed <4198> to <1519> his own <846> house <3624>.
