Now<1161> He was also<2532> saying<3004> to the disciples<3101>, "There was a rich<4145> man<444> who<3739> had<2192> a manager<3623>, and this<3778> manager was reported<1225> to him as squandering<1287> his possessions<5225>.
"And he called<5455> him and said<3004> to him, 'What<5101> is this<3778> I hear<191> about<4012> you? Give<591> an accounting<3056> of your management<3622>, for you can<1410> no<3756> longer<2089> be manager<3621>.'
"The manager<3623> said<3004> to himself<1438>, 'What<5101> shall I do<4160>, since<3754> my master<2962> is taking<851> the management<3622> away<851> from me? I am<2480> not strong<2480> enough<2480> to dig<4626>; I am ashamed<153> to beg<1871>.
'I know<1097> what<5101> I shall do<4160>, so<2443> that when<3752> I am removed<3179> from the management<3622> people will welcome<1209> me into their homes<3624>.'
"And he summoned<4341> each<1538> one<1520> of his master's<2962> debtors<5533>, and he began saying<3004> to the first<4413>, 'How<4214> much<4214> do you owe<3784> my master<2962>?'
"And he said<3004>, 'A hundred<1540> measures<943> of oil<1637>.' And he said<3004> to him, 'Take<1209> your bill<1121>, and sit<2523> down<2523> quickly<5030> and write<1125> fifty<4004>.'
"Then<1899> he said<3004> to another<2087>, 'And how<4214> much<4214> do you owe<3784>?' And he said<3004>, 'A hundred<1540> measures<2884> of wheat<4621>.' He *said<3004> to him, 'Take<1209> your bill<1121>, and write<1125> eighty<3589>.'
"And his master<2962> praised<1867> the unrighteous<93> manager<3623> because<3754> he had acted<4160> shrewdly<5430>; for the sons<5207> of this<3778> age<165> are more<5429> shrewd<5429> in relation<1519> to their own<1438> kind<1074> than<5228> the sons<5207> of light<5457>.
"And I say<3004> to you, make<4160> friends<5384> for yourselves<1438> by means<1537> of the wealth<3126> of unrighteousness<93>, so<2443> that when<3752> it fails<1587>, they will receive<1209> you into the eternal<166> dwellings<4633>.
"He who is faithful<4103> in a very<1646> little<1646> thing<1646> is faithful<4103> also<2532> in much<4183>; and he who is unrighteous<94> in a very<1646> little<1646> thing<1646> is unrighteous<94> also<2532> in much<4183>.
"Therefore<3767> if<1487> you have not been<1096> faithful<4103> in the use of unrighteous<94> wealth<3126>, who<5101> will entrust<4100> the true<228> riches to you?
"And if<1487> you have not been<1096> faithful<4103> in the use of that which is another's<245>, who<5101> will give<1325> you that which is your own?
"No<3762> servant<3610> can<1410> serve<1398> two<1417> masters<2962>; for either<2228> he will hate<3404> the one<1520> and love<25> the other<2087>, or<2228> else<2228> he will be devoted<472> to one<1520> and despise<2706> the other<2087>. You cannot<1410><3756> serve<1398> God<2316> and wealth<3126>."
Now<1161> the Pharisees<5330>, who were lovers<5366> of money<5366>, were listening<191> to all<3956> these<3778> things<3778> and were scoffing<1592> at Him.
And He said<3004> to them, "You are those<3588> who justify<1344> yourselves<1438> in the sight<1799> of men<444>, but God<2316> knows<1097> your hearts<2588>; for that which is highly<5308> esteemed<5308> among<1722> men<444> is detestable<946> in the sight<1799> of God<2316>.
"The Law<3551> and the Prophets<4396> were proclaimed until<3360> John<2491>; since<575> that time<5119> the gospel<2097> of the kingdom<932> of God<2316> has been preached<2097>, and everyone<3956> is forcing<971> his way<971> into it.
"But it is easier<2123> for heaven<3772> and earth<1093> to pass<3928> away<3928> than<2228> for one<1520> stroke<2762> of a letter<2762> of the Law<3551> to fail<4098>.
"Everyone<3956> who divorces<630> his wife<1135> and marries<1060> another<2087> commits<3431> adultery<3431>, and he who marries<1060> one who is divorced<630> from a husband<435> commits<3431> adultery<3431>.
"Now<1161> there was a rich<4145> man<444>, and he habitually dressed<1737> in purple<4209> and fine<1040> linen<1040>, joyously<2165> living<2165> in splendor<2988> every<2596> day<2250>.
"And a poor<4434> man<4434> named<3686> Lazarus<2976> was laid<906> at his gate<4440>, covered<1669> with sores<1669>,
and longing<1937> to be fed<5526> with the crumbs which were falling<4098> from the rich<4145> man's<4145> table<5132>; besides<235>, even<2532> the dogs<2965> were coming<2064> and licking<1952> his sores<1668>.
"Now<1161> the poor<4434> man<4434> died<599> and was carried<667> away<667> by the angels<32> to Abraham's<11> bosom<2859>; and the rich<4145> man<4145> also<2532> died<599> and was buried<2290>.
"In Hades<86> he lifted<1869> up his eyes<3788>, being<5225> in torment<931>, and *saw<3708> Abraham<11> far<3113> away<575><3113> and Lazarus<2976> in his bosom<2859>.
"And he cried<5455> out and said<3004>, 'Father<3962> Abraham<11>, have<1653> mercy<1653> on me, and send<3992> Lazarus<2976> so<2443> that he may dip<911> the tip<206> of his finger<1147> in water<5204> and cool<2711> off my tongue<1100>, for I am<3600> in agony<3600> in this<3778> flame<5395>.'
"But Abraham<11> said<3004>, 'Child<5043>, remember<3403> that during<1722> your life<2222> you received<618> your good<18> things<18>, and likewise<3668> Lazarus<2976> bad<2556> things<2556>; but now<3568> he is being comforted<3870> here<5602>, and you are in agony<3600>.
'And besides<1722> all<3956> this<3778>, between<3342> us and you there is a great<3173> chasm<5490> fixed<4741>, so<3704> that those<3588> who wish<2309> to come<1224> over<1224> from here<1759> to you will not be able<1410>, and that none<3366> may cross<1276> over<1276> from there<1564> to us.'
"And he said<3004>, 'Then<3767> I beg<2065> you, father<3962>, that you send<3992> him to my father's<3962> house<3624>--
for I have<2192> five<4002> brothers<80>--in order<3704> that he may warn<1263> them, so<2443> that they will not also<2532> come<2064> to this<3778> place<5117> of torment<931>.'
"But Abraham<11> *said<3004>, 'They have<2192> Moses<3475> and the Prophets<4396>; let them hear<191> them.'
"But he said<3004>, 'No<3780>, father<3962> Abraham<11>, but if<1437> someone<5100> goes<4198> to them from the dead<3498>, they will repent<3340>!'
"But he said<3004> to him, 'If<1487> they do not listen<191> to Moses<3475> and the Prophets<4396>, they will not be persuaded<3982> even<3761> if<1437> someone<5100> rises<450> from the dead<3498>.'"
