 <<  Lukas 16 >>

Jesus also <2532> said <3004> to <4314> the disciples <3101>, “There <444> was <1510> a rich man <4145> who <3739> was informed of accusations <1225> that his <3778> manager <3623> was wasting <1287> his <846> assets <5224>.

So <2532> he called <5455> the manager <846> in <5455> and said <2036> to him <846>, ‘What <5101> is this <5124> I hear <191> about <4012> you <4675>? Turn in <591> the account <3056> of your <4675> administration <3622>, because <1063> you can <1410> no longer <3756> be <3621> my manager <3621>.’

Then the manager <3623> said <2036> to himself <1438>, ‘What <5101> should I do <4160>, since <3754> my <3450> master <2962> is taking <851> my position <3622> away <851> from <575> me <1700>? I’m <2480> not <3756> strong enough <2480> to dig <4626>, and I’m too ashamed <153> to beg <1871>.

I know <1097> what <5101> to do <4160> so <2443> that when <3752> I am put out <3179> of <1537> management <3622>, people will welcome <1209> me <3165> into <1519> their <1438> homes <3624>.’

So <2532> he contacted <4341> his <1438> master’s <2962> debtors <5533> one by one <1520> <1538>. He asked <3004> the first <4413>, ‘How much <4214> do you owe <3784> my <3450> master <2962>?’

The man replied <2036>, ‘A hundred <1540> measures <943> of olive oil <1637>.’ The manager said <2036> to him <846>, ‘Take <1209> your <4675> bill <1121>, sit down <2523> quickly <5030>, and <2532> write <1125> fifty <4004>.’

Then <1899> he said <2036> to another <2087>, ‘And how much <4214> do you owe <3784>?’ The second man replied <2036>, ‘A hundred <1540> measures <2884> of wheat <4621>.’ The manager said <3004> to him <846>, ‘Take <1209> your <4675> bill <1121>, and <2532> write <1125> eighty <3589>.’

The master <2962> commended <1867> the dishonest <93> manager <3623> because <3754> he acted <4160> shrewdly <5430>. For <3754> the people <5207> of this <5127> world <165> are more shrewd <5429> in dealing with their <1438> contemporaries <1074> than <5228> the people <5207> of light <5457>.

And <2532> I <1473> tell <3004> you <5213>, make <4160> friends <5384> for yourselves <1438> by <1537> how you use worldly wealth <3126> <93>, so that <2443> when <3752> it runs out <1587> you <5209> will be welcomed <1209> into <1519> the eternal <166> homes <4633>.

“The one who is faithful <4103> in <1722> a very little <1646> is <1510> also faithful <4103> in <1722> much <4183>, and <2532> the one who is <1510> dishonest <94> in <1722> a very little <1646> is also <2532> dishonest <94> in <1722> much <4183>.

If <1487> then <3767> you haven’t been <3756> <1096> trustworthy <94> <4103> in <1722> handling worldly wealth <3126>, who <5101> will entrust <4100> you <5213> with the true riches <228>?

And <2532> if <1487> you haven’t been <1096> trustworthy <4103> with <1722> someone else’s property <245>, who <5101> will give <1325> you <5213> your own <2251>?

No <3762> servant <3610> can <1410> serve <1398> two <1417> masters <2962>, for <1063> either he will hate <3404> the one <1520> and <2532> love <25> the other <2087>, or <2228> he will be devoted <472> to the one <1520> and <2532> despise <2706> the other <2087>. You cannot <1410> cannot <3756> serve <1398> God <2316> and <2532> money <3126>.”

The Pharisees <5330> (who loved money <5366>) heard <191> all <3956> this <5023> and ridiculed <1592> him <846>.

But <2532> Jesus said <2036> to them <846>, “You <5210> are <1510> the ones who justify <1344> yourselves <1438> in <1799> men’s eyes <444>, but <1161> God <2316> knows <1097> your <5216> hearts <2588>. For <3754> what is highly prized <5308> among <1722> men <444> is utterly detestable <946> in <1799> God’s <2316> sight <1799>.

“The law <3551> and <2532> the prophets <4396> were in force until <3360> John <2491>; since <575> then <5119>, the good news of the kingdom <932> of God <2316> has been proclaimed <2097>, and <2532> everyone <3956> is urged <971> to enter <1519> it <846>.

But <1161> it is <1510> easier <2123> for heaven <3772> and <2532> earth <1093> to pass away <3928> than <2228> for one <1520> tiny stroke <2762> of a letter in the law <3551> to become void <4098>.

“Everyone <3956> who divorces <630> his <846> wife <1135> and <2532> marries <1060> someone else <2087> commits adultery <3431>, and <2532> the one who marries <1060> a woman divorced <630> from <575> her husband <435> commits adultery <3431>.

“There <444> was <1510> a rich man <4145> who dressed in <1737> purple <4209> and <2532> fine linen <1040> and who feasted <2165> sumptuously <2988> every <2596> day <2250>.

But <1161> at <4314> his <846> gate <4440> lay a poor man <4434> named <3686> Lazarus <2976> whose body was covered <906> with sores <1669>,

who longed <1937> to eat <5526> what fell <4098> from <575> the rich man’s <4145> table <5132>. In addition <235>, the dogs <2965> came <2064> and licked <621> his <846> sores <1668>.

“Now <1096> the poor man <4434> died <599> and <2532> was carried <667> by <5259> the angels <32> to <1519> Abraham’s <11> side <2859>. The rich man <4145> also <2532> died <599> and <2532> was buried <2290>.

And <2532> in <1722> hell <86>, as he was <5225> in <1722> torment <931>, he looked up <1869> and saw <3708> Abraham <11> far off <3113> with Lazarus <2976> at <1722> his <846> side <2859>.

So <2532> he called out <5455>, ‘Father <3962> Abraham <11>, have mercy <1653> on me <3165>, and <2532> send <3992> Lazarus <2976> to <2443> dip <911> the tip <206> of <1147> his <846> finger <1147> in water <5204> and <2532> cool <2711> my <3450> tongue <1100>, because <3754> I am in anguish <3600> in <1722> this <3778> fire <5395>.’

But <1161> Abraham <11> said <2036>, ‘Child <5043>, remember <3415> that <3754> in <1722> your <4675> lifetime <2222> you received <618> your <4675> good things <18> and <2532> Lazarus <2976> likewise <3668> bad things <2556>, but <1161> now <3568> he is comforted <3870> here <5602> and <1161> you <4771> are in anguish <3600>.

Besides all <3956> this <5125>, a great <3173> chasm <5490> has been fixed <4741> between <3342> us <2257>, so that <3704> those who want <2309> to cross over <1224> from here <1759> to <4314> you <5209> cannot <3361> <1410> do so, and no <3366> one can cross <1276> from there <1564> to <4314> us <2248>.’

So <1161> the rich man said <2036>, ‘Then <3767> I beg <2065> you <4571>, father <3962>– send <3992> Lazarus <846> to <1519> my <3450> father’s <3962> house <3624>

(for <1063> I have <2192> five <4002> brothers <80>) to <3704> warn <1263> them <846> so that <2443> they <846> don’t <3361> come <2064> into <1519> this <5126> place <5117> of torment <931>.’

But <1161> Abraham <11> said <3004>, ‘They have <2192> Moses <3475> and <2532> the prophets <4396>; they must respond <191> to them <846>.’

Then <1161> the rich man said <2036>, ‘No <3780>, father <3962> Abraham <11>, but <235> if <1437> someone <5100> from <575> the dead <3498> goes <4198> to <4314> them <846>, they will repent <3340>.’

He replied <2036> to him <846>, ‘If <1487> they do <191> not <3756> respond <191> to Moses <3475> and <2532> the prophets <4396>, they will <3982> not <3761> be convinced <3982> even <3761> if <1437> someone <5100> rises <450> from <1537> the dead <3498>.’”
