And <2532> he said <3004> to them <846>, “I tell <3004> you <5213> the truth <281>, there are <1510> some <5100> standing <2476> here <5602> who <3748> will <1089> not <3756> <3361> experience <1089> death <2288> before <2193> they see <1492> the kingdom <932> of God <2316> come <2064> with <1722> power <1411>.”

Six <1803> days <2250> later <3326> Jesus <2424> took <3880> with him Peter <4074>, James <2385>, and <2532> John <2491> and <2532> led <399> them <846> alone <3441> up <1519> a <3735> high <5308> mountain <3735> privately <2596> <2398>. And <2532> he was transfigured <3339> before <1715> them <846>,

and <2532> his <846> clothes <2440> became <1096> radiantly <4744> white <3022>, more <3029> so <3634> than any launderer <1102> in <1909> the world <1093> could <1410> bleach <3021> them.

Then <2532> Elijah <2243> appeared <3700> before them <846> along with <4862> Moses <3475>, and <2532> they were <1510> talking <4814> with Jesus <2424>.

So <2532> Peter <4074> said <3004> to Jesus <2424>, “Rabbi <4461>, it is <1510> good <2570> for us <2248> to be <1510> here <5602>. Let us make <4160> three <5140> shelters <4633>– one <1520> for you <4671>, one <1520> for Moses <3475>, and <2532> one <1520> for Elijah <2243>.”

(For <1063> they were <1096> afraid <1630>, and he did <1492> not <3756> know <1492> what <5101> to say <611>.)

Then <2532> a cloud <3507> overshadowed <1982> them <846>, and <2532> a voice <5456> came <1096> from <1537> the cloud <3507>, “This <3778> is <1510> my <3450> one dear <27> Son <5207>. Listen <191> to him <846>!”

Suddenly <1819> when <4017> they looked around <4017>, they saw <1492> no one <3762> with <3326> them <1438> any more <3765> except <1487> <3361> Jesus <2424>.

As <2597> they <846> were coming down <2597> from <1537> the mountain <3735>, he gave <1291> them <846> orders <1291> not <3367> to tell <1334> anyone <3367> what <3739> they had seen <1492> until after <1487> <3361> <3752> the Son <5207> of Man <444> had risen <450> from <1537> the dead <3498>.

They kept <2902> this statement <3056> to <4314> themselves <1438>, discussing <4802> what <5101> this rising from <1537> the dead <3498> meant <450>.

Then <2532> they asked <1905> him <846>, “Why do <3004> the experts in the law <1122> say <3004> that <3754> Elijah <2243> must <1163> come <2064> first <4412>?”

He said <5346> to them <846>, “Elijah <2243> does <2064> indeed come <2064> first <4412>, and restores <600> all things <3956>. And <2532> why <4459> is it written <1125> that the Son <5207> of Man <444> must suffer <3958> many things <4183> and <2532> be despised <1847>?

But <235> I tell <3004> you <5213> that <3754> Elijah <2243> has certainly come <2064>, and <2532> they did <4160> to him <846> whatever <3745> they wanted <2309>, just as <2531> it is written <1125> about <1909> him <846>.”

When <2532> they came <2064> to <4314> the disciples <3101>, they saw <3708> a <3793> large <4183> crowd <3793> around <4012> them <846> and <2532> experts in the law <1122> arguing <4802> with <4314> them <846>.

When the whole <3956> crowd <3793> saw <3708> him <846>, they were amazed <1568> and <2532> ran <4370> at once <2117> and greeted <782> him <846>.

He asked <1905> them <846>, “What <5101> are you arguing about <4802> with <4314> them <846>?”

A member <1520> of <1537> the crowd <3793> said <611> to him <846>, “Teacher <1320>, I brought <5342> you <4571> my <3450> son <5207>, who is possessed <2192> by a spirit <4151> that makes him mute <216>.

Whenever <3699> <1437> it seizes <2638> him <846>, it throws <4486> him <846> down <4486>, and <2532> he foams at the mouth <875>, grinds <5149> his teeth <3599>, and <2532> becomes rigid <3583>. I asked <3004> your <4675> disciples <3101> to <2443> cast <1544> it <846> out <1544>, but <2532> they were <2480> not <3756> able <2480> to do so.”

He answered <3004> answered <611> them <846>, “You unbelieving <571> generation <1074>! How much longer <2193> <4219> must I be <1510> with <4314> you <5209>? How much longer <2193> <4219> must I endure <430> you <5216>? Bring <5342> him <846> to <4314> me <3165>.”

So <2532> they brought <5342> the boy <846> to <4314> him <846>. When <2532> the spirit <4151> saw <1492> him <846>, it <4952> immediately <2117> threw <4952> the boy <846> into a convulsion. He fell <4098> on <1909> the ground <1093> and rolled around <2947>, foaming at the mouth <875>.

Jesus asked <1905> his <846> father <3962>, “How <4214> long <5550> has <1096> this <5124> been happening <1096> to him <846>?” And <1161> he said <2036>, “From <1537> childhood <3812>.

It has <906> often <4178> thrown <906> him <846> into <1519> fire <4442> or <2532> water <5204> to <2443> destroy <622> him <846>. But <235> if <1487> you are able <1410> to do anything, have compassion <4697> on <1909> us <2248> and help <997> us <2254>.”

Then Jesus <2424> said <2036> to him <846>, “‘If <1487> you are able <1410>?’ All things <3956> are possible <1415> for the one who believes <4100>.”

Immediately <2117> the father <3962> of the boy <3813> cried out <2896> and said <3004>, “I believe <4100>; help <997> my <3450> unbelief <570>!”

Now when <1492> Jesus <2424> saw <1492> that <3754> a crowd <3793> was <1998> quickly gathering <1998>, he rebuked <2008> the unclean <169> spirit <4151>, saying <3004> to it <846>, “Mute <216> and <2532> deaf <2974> spirit <4151>, I <1473> command <2004> you <4671>, come out <1831> of <1537> him <846> and <2532> never <3371> enter <1525> him <846> again.”

It shrieked <2896>, threw <4682> him into <4682> terrible <4183> convulsions <4682>, and <2532> came out <1831>. The boy looked <1096> so much like <5616> a corpse <3498> that <5620> many <4183> said <3004>, “He is dead <599>!”

But <1161> Jesus <2424> gently took <2902> his <846> hand <5495> and raised <1453> him <846> to his feet, and <2532> he stood up <450>.

Then <2532>, after <1525> he <846> went <1525> into <1519> the house <3624>, his <846> disciples <3101> asked <1905> him <846> privately <2596> <2398>, “Why couldn’t <3756> <1410> we <2249> cast <1544> it <846> out <1544>?”

He <2532> told <2036> them <846>, “This <5124> kind <1085> can <1410> come out <1831> only <1487> <3361> by <1722> prayer <4335>.”

They went out <1831> from there <2547> and passed <4198> through <1223> Galilee <1056>. But <2532> Jesus did <2309> not <3756> want <2309> anyone <5100> to know <1097>,

for <1063> he was teaching <1321> his <846> disciples <3101> and <2532> telling <3004> them <846>, “The Son <5207> of Man <444> will be betrayed <3860> into <1519> the hands <5495> of men <444>. They will kill <615> him <846>, and <2532> after <3326> three <5140> days <2250> he will rise <450>.”

But <1161> they did not understand <50> this statement <4487> and <2532> were afraid <5399> to ask <1905> him <846>.

Then <2532> they came <2064> to <1519> Capernaum <2584>. After <1096> Jesus was <1096> inside <1722> the house <3614> he asked <1905> them <846>, “What <5101> were you discussing <1260> on <1722> the way <3598>?”

But <1161> they were silent <4623>, for <1063> on <1722> the way <3598> they had argued <1256> with <4314> one another <240> about who was <5101> the greatest <3187>.

After <2523> he sat down <2523>, he called <5455> the twelve <1427> and <2532> said <3004> to them <846>, “If <1487> anyone <5100> wants <2309> to be <1510> first <4413>, he must be <1510> last <2078> of all <3956> and <2532> servant <1249> of all <3956>.”

He <2532> took <2983> a little child <3813> and had <2476> him <846> stand <2476> among <1722> <3319> them <846>. Taking <1723> him <846> in <1723> his arms <1723>, he said <2036> to them <846>,

“Whoever <3739> <302> welcomes <1209> one <1520> of these <5108> little children <3813> in <1909> my <3450> name <3686> welcomes <1209> me <1691>, and <2532> whoever <3739> <302> welcomes <1209> me <1691> does <1209> not <3756> welcome <1209> me <1691> but <235> the one who sent <649> me <3165>.”

John <2491> said <5346> to him <846>, “Teacher <1320>, we saw <3708> someone <5100> casting out <1544> demons <1140> in <1722> your <4675> name <3686>, and <2532> we tried to stop <2967> him <846> because <3754> he was <190> not <3756> following <190> us <2254>.”

But <1161> Jesus <2424> said <2036>, “Do <2967> not <3361> stop <2967> him <846>, because <1063> no one <3762> who <3739> does <4160> a miracle <1411> in <1909> my <3450> name <3686> will be able <1410> soon afterward <5035> to say anything bad <2551> about me <3165>.

For <1063> whoever <3739> is <1510> not <3756> against <2596> us <2257> is <1510> for <5228> us <2257>.

For <1063> I tell <3004> you <5213> the truth <281>, whoever <302> gives <4222> you <5209> a cup <4221> of water <5204> because <3754> you bear <1510> Christ’s <5547> name <3686> will <622> never <3756> <3361> lose <622> his <846> reward <3408>.

“If anyone <3739> <302> causes <4624> one <1520> of these <5130> little <3398> ones who believe <4100> in me to sin, it would be <1510> better <2570> for him <846> to have a huge millstone <3458> <3684> tied <4029> around <4012> his <846> neck <5137> and <2532> to be thrown <906> into <1519> the sea <2281>.

If <1437> your <4675> hand <5495> causes <4624> you <4571> to sin <4624>, cut <609> it <846> off <609>! It is <1510> better <2570> for you <4571> to enter <1525> into <1519> life <2222> crippled <2948> than <2228> to have <2192> two <1417> hands <5495> and go <565> into <1519> hell <1067>, to <1519> the unquenchable <762> fire <4442>.

If <1437> your <4675> foot <4228> causes <4624> you <4571> to sin <4624>, cut <609> it <846> off <609>! It is <1510> better <2570> to enter <1525> life <2222> lame <5560> than <2228> to have <2192> two <1417> feet <4228> and be thrown <906> into <1519> hell <1067>.

If <1437> your <4675> eye <3788> causes <4624> you <4571> to sin <4624>, tear <1544> it <846> out <1544>! It is <1510> better <2570> to enter <1525> into <1519> the kingdom <932> of God <2316> with one eye <3442> than <2228> to have <2192> two <1417> eyes <3788> and be thrown <906> into <1519> hell <1067>,

where <3699> their <846> worm <4663> never <3756> dies <5053> and <2532> the fire <4442> is <4570> never <3756> quenched <4570>.

Everyone <3956> will be salted <233> with fire <4442>.

Salt <217> is good <2570>, but <1161> if <1437> it loses its saltiness <217> <358>, how can <1722> <5101> you make <741> it <846> salty <741> again? Have <2192> salt <217> in <1722> yourselves <1438>, and <2532> be at peace <1514> with <1722> each other <240>.”
