2Now there is <1510> in <1722> Jerusalem <2414> by <1909> the Sheep Gate <4262> a pool <2861> called <1951> Bethzatha <964> in Aramaic <1447>, which has <2192> five <4002> covered walkways <4745>.
3A great number <4128> of sick <770>, blind <5185>, lame <5560>, and paralyzed <3584> people were lying <2621> in <1722> these walkways <3778>.
5Now <1161> a man <444> was <1510> there <1563> who had been disabled <2192> <769> for thirty-eight <5144> <2532> <3638> years <2094>.
6When <5126> Jesus <2424> saw <1492> him lying <2621> there and <2532> when he realized <1097> that <3754> the man had been disabled a <5550> long <4183> time <5550> already <2235>, he said <3004> to him <846>, “Do you want <2309> to become <1096> well <5199>?”
7The sick man <770> answered <611> him <846>, “Sir <2962>, I have <2192> no <3756> one <444> to put <906> me <3165> into <1519> the pool <2861> when <3752> the water <5204> is stirred up <5015>. While I <1473> am trying to get into <2064> the water, someone else <243> goes down <2597> there before <4253> me <1700>.”
8Jesus <2424> said <3004> to him <846>, “Stand up <1453>! Pick up <142> your <4675> mat <2895> and <2532> walk <4043>.”
9Immediately <2112> the man <444> was <1096> healed <5199>, and <2532> he picked up <142> his <846> mat <2895> and <2532> started walking <4043>. (Now <1161> that <1565> day <2250> was <1510> a Sabbath <4521>.)
10So <3767> the Jewish <2453> leaders said <3004> to the man who had been healed <2323>, “It is <1510> the Sabbath <4521>, and <2532> you are <1832> not <3756> permitted <1832> to carry <142> your <4671> mat <2895>.”
11But <1161> he answered <611> them <846>, “The man who made <4160> me <3165> well <5199> said <2036> to me <3427>, ‘Pick up <142> your <4675> mat <2895> and <2532> walk <4043>.’”
12They asked <2065> him <846>, “Who <5101> is <1510> the man <444> who said <2036> to you <4671>, ‘Pick up <142> your mat and <2532> walk <4043>’?”
13But <1161> the man who had been healed <2390> did <1492> not <3756> know <1492> who <5101> it was <1510>, for <1063> Jesus <2424> had slipped out <1593>, since there was <1510> a crowd <3793> in <1722> that place <5117>.
14After <3326> this <5023> Jesus <2424> found <2147> him <846> at <1722> the temple <2411> and <2532> said <2036> to him <846>, “Look <1492>, you have become <1096> well <5199>. Don’t <3371> sin <264> any more, lest <3361> anything <5100> worse <5501> happen <1096> to you <4671>.”
15The man <444> went away <565> and <2532> informed <3004> the Jewish <2453> leaders that <3754> Jesus <2424> was <1510> the one who had made <4160> him <846> well <5199>.
16Now <2532> because <1223> Jesus <2424> was doing <4160> these things <5023> on <1722> the Sabbath <4521>, the Jewish <2453> leaders began persecuting <1377> him.
17So <1161> he told <611> them <846>, “My <3450> Father <3962> is working <2038> until <2193> now <737>, and I <2504> too am working <2038>.”
18For <1223> this <5124> reason the Jewish leaders <2453> were trying <2212> even harder to kill <615> him, because <3754> not <3756> only <3440> was he breaking <3089> the Sabbath <4521>, but <235> he was <3004> also calling <3004> God <2316> his own <2398> Father <3962>, thus making <4160> himself <1438> equal <2470> with God <2316>.
19So <3767> Jesus <2424> answered <611> <3004> them <846>, “I tell <3004> you <5213> the solemn truth <281> <281>, the Son <5207> can <1410> do <4160> nothing <3762> on <575> his own <1438> initiative, but only <1437> <3361> what <5100> he sees <991> the Father <3962> doing <4160>. For <1063> whatever <302> the Father does <4160>, the Son <5207> does <4160> likewise <3668>.
20For <1063> the Father <3962> loves <5368> the Son <5207> and <2532> shows <1166> him <846> everything <3956> he does <4160>, and <2532> will show <1166> him <846> greater <3173> deeds <2041> than <3173> these <5130>, so that <2443> you <5210> will be amazed <2296>.
21For <1063> just as <5618> the Father <3962> raises <1453> the dead <3498> and <2532> gives <2227> them life <2227>, so <3779> also <2532> the Son <5207> gives life <2227> to whomever <3739> he wishes <2309>.
22Furthermore <1063>, the Father <3962> does <2919> not <3761> judge <2919> anyone <3762>, but <235> has assigned <1325> all <3956> judgment <2920> to the Son <5207>,
23so that <2443> all people <3956> will honor <5091> the Son <5207> just as <2531> they honor <5091> the Father <3962>. The one who does <5091> not <3361> honor <5091> the Son <5207> does <5091> not <3756> honor <5091> the Father <3962> who sent <3992> him <846>.
24“I tell <3004> you <5213> the solemn truth <281> <281>, the one who hears <191> my <3450> message <3056> and <2532> believes <4100> the one who sent <3992> me <3165> has <2192> eternal <166> life <2222> and <2532> will <2064> not <3756> be condemned <2064>, condemned <2920>, but <235> has crossed over <3327> from <1537> death <2288> to <1519> life <2222>.
25I tell <3004> you <5213> the solemn truth <281> <281>, a time <5610> is coming <2064>– and <2532> is <1510> now <3568> here– when <3753> the dead <3498> will hear <191> the voice <5456> of the Son <5207> of God <2316>, and <2532> those who hear <191> will live <2198>.
26For <1063> just <5618> as the Father <3962> has <2192> life <2222> in <1722> himself <1438>, thus <3779> he has granted <1325> the Son <5207> to have <2192> life <2222> in <1722> himself <1438>,
27and <2532> he has granted <1325> the Son <846> authority <1849> to execute <4160> judgment <2920>, because <3754> he is <1510> the Son <5207> of Man <444>.
28“Do <2296> not <3361> be amazed <2296> at this <5124>, because <3754> a time <5610> is coming <2064> when all <3956> who are in <1722> the tombs <3419> will hear <191> his <846> voice <5456>
29and <2532> will come out <1607>– the ones who have done <4160> what is good <18> to <1519> the resurrection <386> resulting in life <2222>, and the ones who have done <4238> what is evil <5337> to <1519> the resurrection <386> resulting in condemnation <2920>.
30I <1473> can <1410> do <4160> nothing <3762> on <575> my own initiative <1683>. Just <2531> as I hear <191>, I judge <2919>, and <2532> my <1699> judgment <2920> is <1510> just <1342>, because <3754> I do <2212> not <3756> seek <2212> my own <1699> will <2307>, but <235> the will <2307> of the one who sent <3992> me <3165>.
31“If <1437> I <1473> testify <3140> about <4012> myself <1683>, my <3450> testimony <3141> is <1510> not <3756> true <227>.
32There is <1510> another <243> who testifies <3140> about <4012> me <1700>, and <2532> I know <1492> the testimony <3141> he testifies <3140> about <4012> me <1700> is <1510> true <227>.
33You <5210> have sent <649> to <4314> John <2491>, and <2532> he has testified <3140> to the truth <225>.
34(I <1473> do <2983> not <3756> accept <2983> human <444> testimony <3141>, but <235> I say <3004> this <5023> so that <2443> you <5210> may be saved <4982>.)
35He <1565> was <1510> a lamp <3088> that was burning <2545> and <2532> shining <5316>, and <1161> you <5210> wanted <2309> to rejoice greatly <21> for <4314> a short time <5610> in <1722> his <846> light <5457>.
36“But <1161> I <1473> have <2192> a testimony <3141> greater than <3173> that from John <2491>. For <1063> the deeds <2041> that <3739> the Father <3962> has assigned <1325> me <3427> to <2443> complete <5048>– the deeds <2041> I am now doing <4160>– testify <3140> about <4012> me <1700> that <3754> the Father <3962> has sent <649> me <3165>.
37And <2532> the Father <3962> who sent <3992> me <3165> has <3140> himself <1565> testified <3140> about <4012> me <1700>. You <191> people have <191> never <3777> heard <191> his <846> voice <5456> nor <3777> seen <3708> his <846> form <1491> at any time <4455>,
38nor <2532> do you have <2192> his <846> word <3056> residing <3306> in <1722> you <5213>, because <3754> you <5210> do <4100> not <3756> believe <4100> the one whom <3739> he sent <649>.
39You study <2045> the scriptures <1124> thoroughly because <3754> you <5210> think <1380> in <1722> them <846> you possess <2192> eternal <166> life <2222>, and <2532> it is <1510> these <1565> same scriptures that testify <3140> about <4012> me <1700>,
40but <2532> you are <2309> not <3756> willing <2309> to come <2064> to <4314> me <3165> so that <2443> you may have <2192> life <2222>.
41“I do <2983> not <3756> accept <2983> praise <1391> from <3844> people <444>,
42but <235> I know <1097> you <5209>, that <3754> you do <2192> not <3756> have <2192> the love <26> of God <2316> within <1722> you <1438>.
43I <1473> have come <2064> in <1722> my <3450> Father’s <3962> name <3686>, and <2532> you do <2983> not <3756> accept <2983> me <3165>. If <1437> someone else <243> comes <2064> in <1722> his own <2398> name <3686>, you will accept <2983> him <1565>.
44How <4459> can <1410> you <5210> believe <4100>, if you accept <2983> praise <1391> from <3844> one another <240> and <2532> don’t <3756> seek <2212> the praise <1391> that comes from <3844> the only <3441> God <2316>?
45“Do <1380> not <3361> suppose <1380> that <3754> I <1473> will accuse <2723> you <5216> before <4314> the Father <3962>. The one who accuses <2723> you <5216> is <1510> Moses <3475>, in <1519> whom <3739> you have placed <1679> your <5210> hope <1679>.
46If <1487> you believed <4100> Moses <3475>, you would believe <4100> me <1698>, because <1063> he <1565> wrote <1125> about <4012> me <1700>.
47But <1161> if <1487> you do <4100> not <3756> believe <4100> what Moses <1565> wrote <1121>, how <4459> will you believe <4100> my <1699> words <4487>?”
